A 15-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly leading police on a lengthy car chase in his parent's four-wheel-drive, with four friends along for the ride.

Three teenage girls, aged 13, 14 and 15, were in the car, as well as an 11-year-old boy.

The chase ended only when the teen's Ford Territory ran out of fuel.

The pursuit started in Thomastown about 3am on Monday, when police spotted the teenager's 4WD.

The driver allegedly refused to stop, leading police through Melbourne's northern suburbs for 70 kilometres.

Police allege the teen reached speeds of 150km/h during the chase.

"We got in a 'Jack Chase' ... there were like four highway patrol [cars] chasing us," one of the young female passengers told Channel Seven.

"And then we ended up in Kinglake.

"We ran out of fuel in the middle of the road and then we had to run."

The teenagers abandoned the 4WD in Flowerdale and made a run for it, until they came to an electric fence.

"Then I didn't run. I was like, 'well we are going to get done', so I just stopped running," the girl said.

When asked what her father thought of her, the girl replied: "He thinks that I'm just a disappointment."

The Ford Territory belongs to the 15-year-old boy's father, Channel Seven reported.

The four teenagers and the 11-year-old boy spent the day being questioned by police.

The 15-year-old driver has been charged with a number of traffic offences including reckless conduct endangering life, driving in a dangerous manner, speeding and evading police.

He is due to face a children's court at a later date.

The four passengers were not charged.
