Panama (i/ˈpænəmɑː/ PAN-ə-mah; Spanish: Panamá [panaˈma]), officially called the Republic of Panama (Spanish: República de Panamá), is a country in Central America situated between North and South America. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The capital and largest city is Panama City, whose metropolitan area is home to nearly half of the country's 3.9 million people.
Panama was inhabited by several indigenous tribes prior to settlement by the Spanish in the 16th century. Panama broke away from Spain in 1821 and joined a union of Nueva Granada, Ecuador, and Venezuela named the Republic of Gran Colombia. When Gran Colombia dissolved in 1831, Panama and Nueva Granada remained joined, eventually becoming the Republic of Colombia. With the backing of the United States, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903, allowing the Panama Canal to be built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. In 1977, an agreement was signed for the total transfer of the Canal from the United States to Panama by the end of the 20th century, which culminated on 31 December 1999.

The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres (85 ft) above sea level. The current locks are 33.5 metres (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction and is due to open in 2016. France began work on the can...
The expansion of the Panama Canal will not be ready for its 100th anniversary on August 15 as initially hoped by canal authorities. Aimed now to be completed by June 2015, the project was proposed in 2006, began in 2007 and has cost so far US$ 6.5 billion, Newsweek reported. Connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, the canal currently uses locks in which water flows by gravity and raises ships 26 metres (85 feet) above sea level. Ships can then travel through artificial lakes and channels until they reach another set of locks leading to the sea on the other side. The expansion of the canal will feature new sets of locks that will allow the 81-km-long channel to accommodate even bigger vessels. The new locks will be larger but use less water than the existing ones. Basi...

On our last evening in Panama, Caravan Tours gave everyone a farewell dinner. As part of the entertainment for the evening, we were treated to traditional Panamanian music and dance. We also learned about the intricate formal dresses worn by Panamanian women. And yes, that is me (Rick) dancing in the last few minutes of the video. I was invited to dance by the woman you see me dancing with. I tried to follow her lead, but I admit that I was not very good--although Kathy seemed impressed by her words at the very end of the video. This video was recorded on June 28, 2013 with a Canon PowerShot SX50 HS camera.

With Panama's rich history, biodiversity, and a multi-colorered collage of cultures, understanding what is Panamanian can be a difficult task. Walking through Panama City, you are just as likely to end up in a fabulously gay bar as you are a posh salsa club. Dim sum breakfast is served right next door to tortillas and frijoles. Don't even get me started about religion. Then, head out of the city and into the forested Kuna lowlands or vastly deforested Chiriqui highlands. The class changes are shocking and the beauty is breathtaking. Our point of entry was this - non-verbal communication. How better to learn about people than by understanding the unwritten history layered in their movement, spatial organization, posture, and gestures. 10 days, one amazing journey into the heart of ...

Modern time wonder The Panama Canal in Panama City. Panama City is the capital of the southern state of Central America’s land bridge. This vibrant, modern city is located in a tropical country at which Panama’s isthmus is only eighty miles wide. The country's name is famous because it contains the most important waterway in the world and the development of both urban and rural areas is due to the presence of the gigantic Panama Canal. This massive and amazingly expensive project of building technology is best understood by travelling along it, a journey that takes around nine hours and changes direction twice a day. Soon we will see the monumental steel bridge of Puenta De Las Américas, the only land connection between North and South America, since the channel cuts through both continen...

Panama City is a very multicultural place, with large populations from many different parts of the world. Spanish is spoken by most, and many speak some form of English. Customer service is slowly improving, and surprisingly dismal in hotels. However, on the streets Panamanians are for the most part extremely friendly and helpful and would love to give you some advice. There's great shopping, from high-end stores in the malls around Paitilla and in the banking district around Via Espana, to veritable bargains around La Central (Central Avenue, now turned into a pedestrian walkway) and the Los Pueblos outdoor mall. My trip to Panama. I go on a month long trip to Panama visiting many sights. Searching high and low and going off the beaten path. This is my adventure log of sorts. From the mountainsides of Caldera. To the growing city of David. The dilapidated beauty of Caso Viejo with its architecture and old style theatres is a sight to behold. I enter the Chiriqui Provence and have a great time with the locals. The rivers, streams, valleys and springs are all equally beautiful. Panama from what I experienced is a place with serious character and texture. With something new around every corner I don't waste any time in seeing what there is to try. Take a look and see if Panama can lure you in. Enjoy. Video Conception, Editing, and Directed by - Peter Ro - @PETEGONZ -------------------------------...
I went to Panama
To find out why it's called the tropic zone
The senoritas there had so much charm
They could even melt a heart of stone
A hot tamale gal she flashed me a smile
And I lost my heart right then
I thought I'd only stay down there for a day
Now I think I'll never leave again
In Panama those Panamamas
They live the life of a beautiful dream
Your life's a waste until you get a taste of the thrill
That you get from a tropical queen
[ guitar ]
Now kindly get me straight I think they're great
Those gals from Tennessee
But when they say si si in Panama
Then the trill is really different to me
Manana never comes down there
They live just for tonight
I take her in my arms beneath the beautiful palms
And it's heaven when I hold her tight
[ guitar ]
I'm making memories on balconies
Sombreros they fit me fine
I know that pretty soon I'll honeymoon
With that sweet chiquita of mine
Out on the edge of town we're gonna settle down
How happy we're gonna be
It takes a pepper pot from down old Panama
To catch a feller from Tennessee
