Red carpet wrap: what the stars wore this week

In this week's red carpet roundup, Karlie Kloss kills it in white, Drew Barrymore has a skin collar and Rosamund Pike brings back the 70s. By Nyree McFarlane.

Yara Shahidi is only 16 and yet she already knows how to wear sequin stripes with class and just enough whimsy. This Alice + Olivia number is actually a two-piece - top and skirt - which I think is part of the reason she's managing to make a dozen shades of sequin look light and airy rather than excessive. Yes, a dress looking good on Karlie Kloss is hardly a slow-clap accomplishment - even I could fashion a potato sack into something she'd make passable - but that doesn't change the fact that this Rebecca Vallance gown is elegant. It's a white gown that's not too bridal, the skirt is just-fluted-enough, it's super modern and Karlie's hair here is making me reconsider balayage as a life choice. I straight up adore Drew Barrymore, but this Marni dress is emulating a pilgrim school marm' that has been transported to high school in California in 1987 in a wacky time travel mishap - this would be her prom dress. I've seen capris, khakis and more, but I never thought centaur pants would be a thing. Laura Govan's trou' make her look like she's WAY too into astrology, and has turned up to an annual zodiac ball as a literal take on her star sign - Sagittarius. This Sophie Theallet dress that singer-songwriter Halsey is wearing is a strange cut, yes, and its likelihood of inducing a wardrobe malfunction stresses me out, but the thing that pushes me over the edge is the black paper bib over her torso. I'm imagining it's supposed to be a bow? But in its current floppy, rippable-looking form it looks like something that has a medical, surgical use. Not aspirational. Photo: Getty
First things first, this is Cristina Rodriguez and she's a Spanish costume designer - so wearing wacky gowns is her professional right. But this doesn't change the fact that this Emilio Salinas gown is crackers. It's like Kim Kardashian circa 2004 needed an outfit to cater to two events in one night: both the Met Gala and a club opening in Miami - "turn left, I'm high-street bodycon, turn right I'm in overpriced couture". As she walked down the red carpet completely side-on people would tilt their heads in wonder... "I'm multitasking," she'd respond with jazz hands, revealing the lovely silken Jekyll to her tacky sequin Hyde. Photo: Getty
This Giambattista Valli dress is an odd one - it's at once prim while also a little bit 'adult' - I think if it was floor length, and maybe if we got rid of the flimsy cape, Rosamund Pike would be able to pull off the design. But currently she looks like an ice skater in a 70s TV ad for rose-scented fabric softener (did they even have fabric softener in the 70s? Or is it a recent phenomenon of the 'must-have-it' but you probably don't need it consumer treadmill that we live on? Let’s go back to just using baking soda for everything, mmkay?). Photo: Getty
A lovely gown is one thing, but there's nada that floats my boat as much as a jazzy jacket. Let's be honest, none of us have instances to wear ball gowns in reality, but we all need jackets that make jeans and flats look bow-down, and this Armani Prive job that French legend Isabelle Huppert has on is one of those rare gems. Digging it, want it, can't afford it. The pop of shoulder, the sequin pockets, the timeless batik print, the strong structure and the zip, all great. Bigly great. This is one instance in which I like sheer: and that's bolstered by the fact that Ashley Graham has chosen to go for a full bodysuit under this Roberto Cavalli beaded number. It means the see-through element is classy rather than distracting. The silhouette is hawt too - the belted bit gives off a beautiful hourglass vibe. It's thoroughly modern while still a bit Great Gatsby, and I could see the design worn by everyone from Cate Blanchett to Kim Kardashian. Photo: Getty
Lena Dunham's Todd Oldham outfit is 'vintage' and it's clearly from the exact era that I began binge drinking, as it's reminding me of July nights spent early noughties, shivering and polyester-clad. PS: I would like to thank every power that be that smartphones and their picture-taking and sharing abilities didn't exist during this stage of my life. PPS: I too went on an excessive coloured eye makeup journey back when I still actually left my house past 10pm. I convinced myself that it looked 'directional' until I saw photos the next day (on a digi cam, again, this pre-dated smartphones). I actually just looked like I'd been plagued with a terrible sty, and then been attacked by a rabid possum. Now I just stick to nude palettes - it's better that way. Photo: Getty
