Of all the animals in the oceans, the hammerhead shark may be one of the strangest looking. The exact purpose of the wide, flat head is a mystery, but several theories abound. We travel to the shark-infested waters of the Galapagos in Ecuador and to a research station in Hawaii to learn about the unusual habits of these sinister-looking sharks. Jonathan swims in schools of hundreds of hammerheads, and yet the sharks ignore him. What are the sharks up to?

In the Galapagos Islands, during certain times of the year, large aggregations of Scalloped Hammerheads come together to circle around Darwin Island. Scalloped Hammerheads normally live in the open ocean, but here at Darwin Island they come close to shore in large numbers.
Considering the vast numbers of fish here, it would be logical to assume that the sharks come to feed. Yet, nobody has ever witnessed the sharks feeding.
The Galapagos Islands are a remote archipelago 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean.
Hammerheads are most common at the northernmost island of Darwin, famous for its stone arch.
Hammerheads are of course known for their strange, flattened heads. But you have to wonder…what is that flat head for?
Shark biologists put their own heads together to figure it out. At first, they speculated that it gave the hammerhead wider stereoscopic vision. But that didn’t work: hammerhead eyes face in opposite directions, meaning they can’t see in stereo. The wide head probably has nothing to do with eyesight.
So maybe it has to do with the sense of smell. Wider spaced olfactory organs would help the hungry shark sniff out prey more accurately.
Well, not really.
Although the nostrils and olfactory organs are widely spaced, a groove along the front of the head effectively connects them together. Therefore, they don't give the hammerhead a better sense of directional smell than any other shark.
Scientists finally hit upon a graceful reason for the awkward head: It helps the hammerhead turn faster by eliminating the need for large pectoral fins.
Some sharks, like white tip reef sharks can rest all day if they want, just gulping water to ventilate their gills, the shark equivalent of breathing.
Hammerheads, on the other hand, cannot accomplish this. Like most pelagic sharks, they must keep swimming not only to stay up off the bottom, but to breathe. In an ironic twist of fate, if a hammerhead stops swimming, it will drown. The big flat head is a wing to keep the hammerhead up off the bottom.
Researcher Kanesa Duncan at the University of Hawaii is studying Scalloped hammerheads. She catches the sharks when they are just pups, only a few weeks old, in Kaneohe Bay on Oahu.
By holding the shark upside down, she places it in a kind of trans called Tonic Immobility.
She frequently puts the pup back in the water to aerate the gills.
Once aboard the boat, she first measures the shark while an assistant records the data. Next she implants a small visual tag with a number on it through the shark’s dorsal fin. This does not hurt the shark at all. The fin is almost completely made of cartilage. Next, she weighs the pup.
Back at the lab, Duncan has several captive hammerhead pups that she is working with to determine growth patterns. She wants to learn, among other things, how fast baby Hammerheads grow.
But I still want to know what they are all doing at Darwin Island in the Galapagos, and I finally get a clue when I see a shark being investigated by a fish.
The strong current at Darwin Island allows a hammerhead to swim in place, like a runner on a treadmill, yet hold a fixed position over the reef.
King Angelfish make their homes on this reef and they serve as cleaner fish for the sharks.
Because the sharks get cuts and scrapes, not to mention parasites, that need cleaning, they come to a cleaning station where a King Angelfish is waiting to clean the wounds and eat the parasites.
A shark looking to be cleaned often swims at an angle, with its white belly showing. This body language tells the angelfish to come on over.

Rare footage shows an attack on a hammerhead shark by a tiger shark off the coast of Louisiana. A sport fisherman had gotten the hammerhead on the line only minutes before the other, much larger shark approached the fishing boat and seized its prey. Sport angler Ryan Willsea and his brother Aaron captured the footage using a selfie stick to submerge an action cam.

I’m testing the feasibility of using a special kind of camera called a RED to shoot a film for fulldome theaters, which are theaters with a hemispherical screen that make the audience feel immersed in the subject.
A good place for a test is nice clear water, so I have come down to West Palm Beach to board the Dolphin Dream, one of my favorite dive boats, run by one of my favorite captains—Captain Scotty.
Cameraman Todd has joined me and we also invited my friend Mauricio Handler, a cameraman for National Geographic who has volunteered to give us an introduction to the RED and let me learn on his camera system.
Once we reach the Bahamas and get anchored, the crew starts the process of chumming for sharks.
Hopefully all this chum will bring in the Hammerheads!
I suit up to have a look down below and see if any sharks are showing up for the party. Mauricio and Todd film me suiting up with the fisheye lens to see how it will look on the dome screen.
But things are looking up. A big nurse shark has come in. With its large entourage of remoras, the nurse shark works up the courage to come in close and snap up a delicious piece of fish.
Then, out in the hazy distance, a sharky shape! And it’s approaching!
A Great Hammerhead!
It circles around the bait box, looking for tasty treats. Great Hammerheads are notoriously shy, but this one managed to overcome its fear for a snack.
Seeing it up close, I now understand why they’re called “Great”. These sharks are much bigger than I imagined. They make scalloped hammerheads look like juveniles.
The hammer, otherwise known as the cephalofoil, is an arm’s length wide. And the dorsal fin is nearly as tall. Great indeed!
Soon I realize that there is more than one animal. Both are large females and this one has a bright yellow acoustic tag on it, likely from the nearby Bimini Field research station.
Great Hammerheads have a fierce reputation—for being shy. They are just not a species that is likely to bite a swimmer or a diver. It’s not just rare to see one in the wild, it’s actually pretty rare to even be able to get them close with bait. The only reason it works here in the Bahamas at this particular spot is because researchers have been doing it for years. The sharks are used to it and they have come to trust that divers mean them no harm.
Again, with no notice, one of the Hammerheads comes out of the distance. Her keen sense of smell tells her we have fish and she wants some. But when she gets close to our bright lights blinding her, she gets a little nervous and bolts away into the darkness.
Eventually she works up the nerve to come back in and tolerates our lights on her search for food.
At times she hugs the bottom, swaying her head back and forth like a metal detector, probably trying to pick up a whiff of fish on the sand.
Finally she finds a piece of bait, but she has a hard time eating it. Most dive operators use fish leftovers from fishermen as bait. There isn’t much meat on it and the bones get tangled in the shark’s teeth—so it’s actually really hard to eat.
I spend an hour with the Hammerheads and then its back to the boat. I’ll sleep well tonight.
Our expedition to the Bahamas to film sharks was a huge success. Not only did we see some amazing Great Hammerheads, but we used the experience to learn how to shoot with the RED camera and the fisheye lens for fulldome.
Practice with the hammerheads and subsequent screening in a fulldome theater showed me how to compose images for the dome.
Four months later, we used those skills and started production on our first fulldome film in collaboration with NASA.
We filmed at the Neutral Buoyancy Lab in Houston, where astronauts practice spacewalking. Then we followed the astronauts to Aquarius Reef base and filmed a NEEMO mission on the sea floor, testing equipment and techniques for exploring asteroids.
Space School was released in January of 2015. It’s about how astronauts train underwater for life and work in space. You can see it at your local planetarium or fulldome theater! It’s the closest experience to diving without actually getting wet!

Veli caught this massive hammerhead shark on Monday morning in Fort Lauderdale (Lauderdale-by-the-Sea). I came down to the beach to help him with the release of this monster. The beach was very crowded and it was very chaotic. The shark was bigger than our 12' measuring tape by 8-10 inches making this shark around 13 ft. We got this shark out of the water and back in very quickly to ensure its survival. This will be the short version of this video I will upload a longer version with a full fight later in the week. A good place for a test is nice clear water, so I have come down to West Palm Beach to board the Dolphin Dream, one of my favorite dive boats, run by one of my favorite captains—Captain Scotty. Cameraman Todd has joined me and we also invited my friend Mauricio Handler, a cameraman for National Geographic who has volunteered to give us an introduction to the RED and let me learn on his camera system. Once we reach the Bahamas and get anchored, the crew starts the process of chumming for sharks. Hopefully all this chum will bring in the Hammerheads! I suit up to have a look down below and see if any sharks are showing up for the party. Mauricio and Todd film me suiting up with the fisheye lens to see how it will look on the dome screen. But things are looking up. A big nurse shark has come in. With its large entourage of remoras, the nurse shark works up the courage to come in close and snap up a delicious piece of fish. Then, out in the hazy distance, a sharky shape! And it’s approaching! A Great Hammerhead! It circles around the bait box, looking for tasty treats. Great Hammerheads are notoriously shy, but this one managed to overcome its fear for a snack. Seeing it up close, I now understand why they’re called “Great”. These sharks are much bigger than I imagined. They make scalloped hammerheads look like juveniles. The hammer, otherwise known as the cephalofoil, is an arm’s length wide. And the dorsal fin is nearly as tall. Great indeed! Soon I realize that there is more than one animal. Both are large females and this one has a bright yellow acoustic tag on it, likely from the nearby Bimini Field research station. Great Hammerheads have a fierce reputation—for being shy. They are just not a species that is likely to bite a swimmer or a diver. It’s not just rare to see one in the wild, it’s actually pretty rare to even be able to get them close with bait. The only reason it works here in the Bahamas at this particular spot is because researchers have been doing it for years. The sharks are used to it and they have come to trust that divers mean them no harm. Again, with no notice, one of the Hammerheads comes out of the distance. Her keen sense of smell tells her we have fish and she wants some. But when she gets close to our bright lights blinding her, she gets a little nervous and bolts away into the darkness. Eventually she works up the nerve to come back in and tolerates our lights on her search for food. At times she hugs the bottom, swaying her head back and forth like a metal detector, probably trying to pick up a whiff of fish on the sand. Finally she finds a piece of bait, but she has a hard time eating it. Most dive operators use fish leftovers from fishermen as bait. There isn’t much meat on it and the bones get tangled in the shark’s teeth—so it’s actually really hard to eat. I spend an hour with the Hammerheads and then its back to the boat. I’ll sleep well tonight. Our expedition to the Bahamas to film sharks was a huge success. Not only did we see some amazing Great Hammerheads, but we used the experience to learn how to shoot with the RED camera and the fisheye lens for fulldome. Practice with the hammerheads and subsequent screening in a fulldome theater showed me how to compose images for the dome. Four months later, we used those skills and started production on our first fulldome film in collaboration with NASA. We filmed at the Neutral Buoyancy Lab in Houston, where astronauts practice spacewalking. Then we followed the astronauts to Aquarius Reef base and filmed a NEEMO mission on the sea floor, testing equipment and techniques for exploring asteroids. Space School was released in January of 2015. It’s about how astronauts train underwater for life and work in space. You can see it at your local planetarium or fulldome theater! It’s the closest experience to diving without actually getting wet! -

Veli caught this massive hammerhead shark on Monday morning in Fort Lauderdale (Lauderdale-by-the-Sea). I came down to the beach to help him with the release of this monster. The beach was very crowded and it was very chaotic. The shark was bigger than our 12' measuring tape by 8-10 inches making this shark around 13 ft. We got this shark out of the water and back in very quickly to ensure its survival. This will be the short version of this video I will upload a longer version with a full fight later in the week. Fort Lauderdale Florida Giant 13 Foot Hammerhead Shark! (ORIGINAL VIDEO)
Veli caught this massive hammerhead shark on Monday morning in Fort Lauderdale (Lauderdale-by-the-Sea). I came down to the beach to help him with the release of this monster. The beach was very crowded and it was very chaotic. The shark was bigger than our 12' measuring tape by 8-10 inches making this shark around 13 ft. We got this shark out of the water and back in very quickly to ensure its survival. This will be the short version of this video I will upload a longer version with a full fight later in the week. In the Galapagos Islands, during certain times of the year, large aggregations of Scalloped Hammerheads come together to circle around Darwin Island. Scalloped Hammerheads normally live in the open ocean, but here at Darwin Island they come close to shore in large numbers.
Considering the vast numbers of fish here, it would be logical to assume that the sharks come to feed. Yet, nobody has ever witnessed the sharks feeding.
The Galapagos Islands are a remote archipelago 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean.
Hammerheads are most common at the northernmost island of Darwin, famous for its stone arch.
Hammerheads are of course known for their strange, flattened heads. But you have to wonder…what is that flat head for?
Shark biologists put their own heads together to figure it out. At first, they speculated that it gave the hammerhead wider stereoscopic vision. But that didn’t work: hammerhead eyes face in opposite directions, meaning they can’t see in stereo. The wide head probably has nothing to do with eyesight.
So maybe it has to do with the sense of smell. Wider spaced olfactory organs would help the hungry shark sniff out prey more accurately.
Well, not really.
Although the nostrils and olfactory organs are widely spaced, a groove along the front of the head effectively connects them together. Therefore, they don't give the hammerhead a better sense of directional smell than any other shark.
Scientists finally hit upon a graceful reason for the awkward head: It helps the hammerhead turn faster by eliminating the need for large pectoral fins.
Some sharks, like white tip reef sharks can rest all day if they want, just gulping water to ventilate their gills, the shark equivalent of breathing.
Hammerheads, on the other hand, cannot accomplish this. Like most pelagic sharks, they must keep swimming not only to stay up off the bottom, but to breathe. In an ironic twist of fate, if a hammerhead stops swimming, it will drown. The big flat head is a wing to keep the hammerhead up off the bottom.
Researcher Kanesa Duncan at the University of Hawaii is studying Scalloped hammerheads. She catches the sharks when they are just pups, only a few weeks old, in Kaneohe Bay on Oahu.
By holding the shark upside down, she places it in a kind of trans called Tonic Immobility.
She frequently puts the pup back in the water to aerate the gills.
Once aboard the boat, she first measures the shark while an assistant records the data. Next she implants a small visual tag with a number on it through the shark’s dorsal fin. This does not hurt the shark at all. The fin is almost completely made of cartilage. Next, she weighs the pup.
Back at the lab, Duncan has several captive hammerhead pups that she is working with to determine growth patterns. She wants to learn, among other things, how fast baby Hammerheads grow.
But I still want to know what they are all doing at Darwin Island in the Galapagos, and I finally get a clue when I see a shark being investigated by a fish.
The strong current at Darwin Island allows a hammerhead to swim in place, like a runner on a treadmill, yet hold a fixed position over the reef.
King Angelfish make their homes on this reef and they serve as cleaner fish for the sharks.
Because the sharks get cuts and scrapes, not to mention parasites, that need cleaning, they come to a cleaning station where a King Angelfish is waiting to clean the wounds and eat the parasites.
A shark looking to be cleaned often swims at an angle, with its white belly showing. This body language tells the angelfish to come on over.

Often, something seems amiss to the shark and it rebuffs the fish. The sharks feel vulnerable while they are being cleaned, so they pick a cleaning station carefully. If anything doesn’t seem right, they move on.

In the Galapagos Islands, during certain times of the year, large aggregations of Scalloped Hammerheads come together to circle around Darwin Island. Scalloped Hammerheads normally live in the open ocean, but here at Darwin Island they come close to shore in large numbers.
Considering the vast numbers of fish here, it would be logical to assume that the sharks come to feed. Yet, nobody has ever witnessed the sharks feeding.
The Galapagos Islands are a remote archipelago 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean.
Hammerheads are most common at the northernmost island of Darwin, famous for its stone arch.
Hammerheads are of course known for their strange, flattened heads. But you have to wonder…what is that flat head for?
Shark biologists put their own heads together to figure it out. At first, they speculated that it gave the hammerhead wider stereoscopic vision. But that didn’t work: hammerhead eyes face in opposite directions, meaning they can’t see in stereo. The wide head probably has nothing to do with eyesight.
So maybe it has to do with the sense of smell. Wider spaced olfactory organs would help the hungry shark sniff out prey more accurately.
Well, not really.
Although the nostrils and olfactory organs are widely spaced, a groove along the front of the head effectively connects them together. Therefore, they don't give the hammerhead a better sense of directional smell than any other shark.
Scientists finally hit upon a graceful reason for the awkward head: It helps the hammerhead turn faster by eliminating the need for large pectoral fins.
Some sharks, like white tip reef sharks can rest all day if they want, just gulping water to ventilate their gills, the shark equivalent of breathing.
Hammerheads, on the other hand, cannot accomplish this. Like most pelagic sharks, they must keep swimming not only to stay up off the bottom, but to breathe. In an ironic twist of fate, if a hammerhead stops swimming, it will drown. The big flat head is a wing to keep the hammerhead up off the bottom.
Researcher Kanesa Duncan at the University of Hawaii is studying Scalloped hammerheads. She catches the sharks when they are just pups, only a few weeks old, in Kaneohe Bay on Oahu.
By holding the shark upside down, she places it in a kind of trans called Tonic Immobility.
She frequently puts the pup back in the water to aerate the gills.
Once aboard the boat, she first measures the shark while an assistant records the data. Next she implants a small visual tag with a number on it through the shark’s dorsal fin. This does not hurt the shark at all. The fin is almost completely made of cartilage. Next, she weighs the pup.
Back at the lab, Duncan has several captive hammerhead pups that she is working with to determine growth patterns. She wants to learn, among other things, how fast baby Hammerheads grow.
But I still want to know what they are all doing at Darwin Island in the Galapagos, and I finally get a clue when I see a shark being investigated by a fish.
The strong current at Darwin Island allows a hammerhead to swim in place, like a runner on a treadmill, yet hold a fixed position over the reef.
King Angelfish make their homes on this reef and they serve as cleaner fish for the sharks.
Because the sharks get cuts and scrapes, not to mention parasites, that need cleaning, they come to a cleaning station where a King Angelfish is waiting to clean the wounds and eat the parasites.
A shark looking to be cleaned often swims at an angle, with its white belly showing. This body language tells the angelfish to come on over.

Often, something seems amiss to the shark and it rebuffs the fish. The sharks feel vulnerable while they are being cleaned, so they pick a cleaning station carefully. If anything doesn’t seem right, they move on.

I’m testing the feasibility of using a special kind of camera called a RED to shoot a film for fulldome theaters, which are theaters with a hemispherical screen that make the audience feel immersed in the subject.
A good place for a test is nice clear water, so I have come down to West Palm Beach to board the Dolphin Dream, one of my favorite dive boats, run by one of my favorite captains—Captain Scotty.
Cameraman Todd has joined me and we also invited my friend Mauricio Handler, a cameraman for National Geographic who has volunteered to give us an introduction to the RED and let me learn on his camera system.
Once we reach the Bahamas and get anchored, the crew starts the process of chumming for sharks.
Hopefully all this chum will bring in the Hammerheads!
I suit up to have a look down below and see if any sharks are showing up for the party. Mauricio and Todd film me suiting up with the fisheye lens to see how it will look on the dome screen.
But things are looking up. A big nurse shark has come in. With its large entourage of remoras, the nurse shark works up the courage to come in close and snap up a delicious piece of fish.
Then, out in the hazy distance, a sharky shape! And it’s approaching!
A Great Hammerhead!
It circles around the bait box, looking for tasty treats. Great Hammerheads are notoriously shy, but this one managed to overcome its fear for a snack.
Seeing it up close, I now understand why they’re called “Great”. These sharks are much bigger than I imagined. They make scalloped hammerheads look like juveniles.
The hammer, otherwise known as the cephalofoil, is an arm’s length wide. And the dorsal fin is nearly as tall. Great indeed!
Soon I realize that there is more than one animal. Both are large females and this one has a bright yellow acoustic tag on it, likely from the nearby Bimini Field research station.
Great Hammerheads have a fierce reputation—for being shy. They are just not a species that is likely to bite a swimmer or a diver. It’s not just rare to see one in the wild, it’s actually pretty rare to even be able to get them close with bait. The only reason it works here in the Bahamas at this particular spot is because researchers have been doing it for years. The sharks are used to it and they have come to trust that divers mean them no harm.
Again, with no notice, one of the Hammerheads comes out of the distance. Her keen sense of smell tells her we have fish and she wants some. But when she gets close to our bright lights blinding her, she gets a little nervous and bolts away into the darkness.
Eventually she works up the nerve to come back in and tolerates our lights on her search for food.
At times she hugs the bottom, swaying her head back and forth like a metal detector, probably trying to pick up a whiff of fish on the sand.
Finally she finds a piece of bait, but she has a hard time eating it. Most dive operators use fish leftovers from fishermen as bait. There isn’t much meat on it and the bones get tangled in the shark’s teeth—so it’s actually really hard to eat.
I spend an hour with the Hammerheads and then its back to the boat. I’ll sleep well tonight.
Our expedition to the Bahamas to film sharks was a huge success. Not only did we see some amazing Great Hammerheads, but we used the experience to learn how to shoot with the RED camera and the fisheye lens for fulldome.
Practice with the hammerheads and subsequent screening in a fulldome theater showed me how to compose images for the dome.
Four months later, we used those skills and started production on our first fulldome film in collaboration with NASA.
We filmed at the Neutral Buoyancy Lab in Houston, where astronauts practice spacewalking. Then we followed the astronauts to Aquarius Reef base and filmed a NEEMO mission on the sea floor, testing equipment and techniques for exploring asteroids.
Space School was released in January of 2015. It’s about how astronauts train underwater for life and work in space. You can see it at your local planetarium or fulldome theater! It’s the closest experience to diving without actually getting wet!

Veli caught this massive hammerhead shark on Monday morning in Fort Lauderdale (Lauderdale-by-the-Sea). I came down to the beach to help him with the release of this monster. The beach was very crowded and it was very chaotic. The shark was bigger than our 12' measuring tape by 8-10 inches making this shark around 13 ft. We got this shark out of the water and back in very quickly to ensure its survival. This will be the short version of this video I will upload a longer version with a full fight later in the week. Thanks for watching, thanks to all those who made this video possible and stay tuned for more awesome videos!
