Goliath Heron catches massive catfish and swallows it whole, after a couple of attempts. See Part 2 for the after the swallow footage.
This was filmed at dusk on a Canon PowerShot SX60 HS with no tripod and fully zoomed, while hiding amongst some reeds. After he walked off with the fish, I emerged from the reeds and walked slowly around the lake to the other side to capture the swallow. The entire event was almost 20 minutes from catch until swallow.
The Goliath Heron (Ardea Goliath) is the world's largest heron, nearly double the size of the Purple Heron. They are 140-150cm in height and weigh roughly 4.30kg. The sexes are alike. It is generally an uncommon resident. Feeds mostly on large fish but also reptiles, frogs and small mammals. Once prey is spotted, it lunges with bill open and stabs the fish. It usually requires 2 to 3 large meals per day.
This footage was captured at an inlake dam called Waterlily Lake. It is one of several lakes on a residential and golf estate, called Pecanwood Estate, located at Hartbeespoort Dam, North West Province, South Africa. The property where Waterlily Lake is located is owned by Country Heights Holdings BHD.
Many species of wildlife have been observed, including the Goliath Herons, Cape Clawless Otters, Marsh Mongoose, Little Bittern and African Spoonbill.
Because the water from Hartbeespoort dam is abstracted, and circulated within the inlake dams - it is vital to preserve reed-beds in the inlake dams, as Biological filtering systems. Hartbeespoort dam has historically suffered from toxic blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria); which could easily be transferred to the inlake dams. So having the nutrient filtering reed-beds is crucial. Secondly, the reed-beds provide Aquatic Habitat for many different Wildlife species, thereby promoting Biodiversity.

This Great Blue Heron caught and killed four gophers in a row without a miss! Two gophers were swallowed and two were left uneaten. The first gopher was quite large and took some effort and lubrication from a water puddle to swallow. Herons have been known to choke to death while trying to swallow large prey, but not this time. A few days earlier, I was fortunate to film a much smaller sized egret catching a large gopher and struggling for about 9 minutes to swallow it! This video is at http://youtu.be/EqpKf_PXgjI. I was amazed that the egret's skinny neck could eventually stretch enough to pass the large gopher!
I was surprised to see the heron continue to hunt and kill more gophers than it ate. I suspect that it enjoyed hunting for fun as well as for food. I filmed the heron for about 90 minutes in the late afternoon. I don't know how many gophers the heron may have caught before I arrived at the scene.
The heron struck the gophers so hard that they appeared to die very quickly after the first blow. Gopher #4 was struck only once; and then it was quickly dropped to the ground. The heron watched it for about 15 minutes, as if to see if it moved, and then walked away without eating the dead gopher. The heron appeared to continue to hunt for more gophers as darkness fell. I got cold and went home.
This heron could easily get a job in backyards plagued with gophers!
I filmed this event on March 17, 2012 at Miller Knox Regional Park in Pt. Richmond, CA, along the San Francisco Bay Trail after several days of heavy rains. The gophers on this fateful day may have been more vulnerable than usual due to partial flooding of their burrows after the recent rains. I used a Panasonic GH2 camera to capture the footage.

My mom caught this amazing footage of an eagle swimming to shore, a Heron in its talons having claimed it in a brief skirmish above the water. She says...
"We were cruising out of Port Browning, in BC's Gulf Islands, when we noticed a commotion just over the water ahead of us. It was a mature bald eagle 'chasing' a young blue heron - which was ultimately forced into the water. We changed course and headed toward them, thinking we may need to stage a 'rescue' (of both birds, because by then the eagle was in the water too). By the time I got out my camera, this is what we saw...."

Great blue heron
The great blue heron (Ardea herodias) is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North America and Central America, as well as the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands. It is a rare vagrant to Europe, with records from Spain, the Azores, England, and the Netherlands. An all-white population found only in the Caribbean and southern Florida was once treated as a separate species and known as the great white heron.
Taxonomy
The great blue heron was one of the many species originally described by Carl Linnaeus in his 18th-century work, Systema Naturae.
The great blue heron is replaced in the Old World by the very similar grey heron (Ardea cinerea), which differs in being somewhat smaller (90–98 cm (35–39 in)), with a pale gray neck and legs, lacking the browner colors that great blue heron has there. It forms a superspecies with this and also with the cocoi heron from South America, which differs in having more extensive black on the head, and a white breast and neck.

Goliath Heron catches massive catfish and swallows it whole, after a couple of attempts. See Part 2 for the after the swallow footage. This was filmed at dusk on a Canon PowerShot SX60 HS with no tripod and fully zoomed, while hiding amongst some reeds. After he walked off with the fish, I emerged from the reeds and walked slowly around the lake to the other side to capture the swallow. The entire event was almost 20 minutes from catch until swallow. The Goliath Heron (Ardea Goliath) is the world's largest heron, nearly double the size of the Purple Heron. This Great Blue Heron caught and killed four gophers in a row without a miss! Two gophers were swallowed and two were left uneaten. The first gopher was quite large and took some effort and lubrication from a water puddle to swallow. Herons have been known to choke to death while trying to swallow large prey, but not this time. "We were cruising out of Port Browning, in BC's Gulf Islands, when we noticed a commotion just over the water ahead of us. This was filmed at dusk on a Canon PowerShot SX60 HS with no tripod and fully zoomed, while hiding amongst some reeds. After he walked off with the fish, I emerged from the reeds and walked slowly around the lake to the other side to capture the swallow. The entire event was almost 20 minutes from catch until swallow.
The Goliath Heron (Ardea Goliath) is the world's largest heron, nearly double the size of the Purple Heron. They are 140-150cm in height and weigh roughly 4.30kg. The sexes are alike. It is generally an uncommon resident. Feeds mostly on large fish but also reptiles, frogs and small mammals. Once prey is spotted, it lunges with bill open and stabs the fish. It usually requires 2 to 3 large meals per day.
This footage was captured at an inlake dam called Waterlily Lake. It is one of several lakes on a residential and golf estate, called Pecanwood Estate, located at Hartbeespoort Dam, North West Province, South Africa. The property where Waterlily Lake is located is owned by Country Heights Holdings BHD.
Many species of wildlife have been observed, including the Goliath Herons, Cape Clawless Otters, Marsh Mongoose, Little Bittern and African Spoonbill.
Because the water from Hartbeespoort dam is abstracted, and circulated within the inlake dams - it is vital to preserve reed-beds in the inlake dams, as Biological filtering systems. Hartbeespoort dam has historically suffered from toxic blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria); which could easily be transferred to the inlake dams. So having the nutrient filtering reed-beds is crucial. Secondly, the reed-beds provide Aquatic Habitat for many different Wildlife species, thereby promoting Biodiversity.

Hartbeespoort dam has historically suffered from toxic blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria); which could easily be transferred to the inlake dams. So having the nutrient filtering reed-beds is crucial. Secondly, the reed-beds provide Aquatic Habitat for many different Wildlife species, thereby promoting Biodiversity.

This Great Blue Heron caught and killed four gophers in a row without a miss! Two gophers were swallowed and two were left uneaten. The first gopher was quite large and took some effort and lubrication from a water puddle to swallow. Herons have been known to choke to death while trying to swallow large prey, but not this time. A few days earlier, I was fortunate to film a much smaller sized egret catching a large gopher and struggling for about 9 minutes to swallow it! This video is at http://youtu.be/EqpKf_PXgjI. I was amazed that the egret's skinny neck could eventually stretch enough to pass the large gopher!
I was surprised to see the heron continue to hunt and kill more gophers than it ate. I suspect that it enjoyed hunting for fun as well as for food. I filmed the heron for about 90 minutes in the late afternoon. I don't know how many gophers the heron may have caught before I arrived at the scene.
The heron struck the gophers so hard that they appeared to die very quickly after the first blow. Gopher #4 was struck only once; and then it was quickly dropped to the ground. The heron watched it for about 15 minutes, as if to see if it moved, and then walked away without eating the dead gopher. The heron appeared to continue to hunt for more gophers as darkness fell. I got cold and went home.
This heron could easily get a job in backyards plagued with gophers!
I filmed this event on March 17, 2012 at Miller Knox Regional Park in Pt. Richmond, CA, along the San Francisco Bay Trail after several days of heavy rains. The gophers on this fateful day may have been more vulnerable than usual due to partial flooding of their burrows after the recent rains. I used a Panasonic GH2 camera to capture the footage.

"We were cruising out of Port Browning, in BC's Gulf Islands, when we noticed a commotion just over the water ahead of us. It was a mature bald eagle 'chasing' a young blue heron - which was ultimately forced into the water. We changed course and headed toward them, thinking we may need to stage a 'rescue' (of both birds, because by then the eagle was in the water too). By the time I got out my camera, this is what we saw...."
