Cape Verde /ˌkeɪp ˈvɜːrd/ or Cabo Verde /kɑːboʊ ˈvɜːrdeɪ/, /kæ-/ (Portuguese: Cabo Verde, pronounced: [ˈkabu ˈveɾdɨ]), officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) off the coast of Western Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).
The Cape Verde archipelago was uninhabited until the 15th century, when Portuguese explorers discovered and colonized the islands, establishing the first European settlement in the tropics. Ideally located for the Atlantic slave trade, the islands grew prosperous throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, attracting merchants, privateers, and pirates. The end of slavery in the 19th century led to economic decline and emigration, although Cape Verde gradually recovered as an important commercial center and stopover for shipping routes. Incorporated as an overseas department of Portugal in 1951, the islands continued to agitate for independence, which was peacefully achieved in 1975.

Zika has reached Africa. The virus has been blamed for birth abnormalities in Brazil and other countries. The World Health Organization says two hundred cases have been confirmed on the island of Cape Verde. Thousands more are suspected. Cases of birth defects have also been reported. 170 pregnant women are among those infected. The findings are of concern because it's further proof the outbreak is spreading beyond South America. That's according to the the W.H.O.'s Africa director. The W.H.O. says Africa needs to re-evaluate risk levels and increase preparedness. The W.H.O. does not, however, recommend strict travel restrictions.

http://undergroundworldnews.com Cape Verde Islands: Earthquakes on Brava in the Cape Verde Islands noticed on August 1 have prompted a heightened alert and evacuations of over 300 people from the slopes of the volcano. Brava has no known eruptions in the past 10,000 years, although many of the cones and flows on the volcano look relatively young. Based on its location in an oceanic island chain (like Hawai’i), you might expect lava flows from Brava. However, some of what are thought to be the most recent eruptions are phonolite, which is a stickier lava with higher silica content that can produce explosive eruptions. Combine that with interaction with groundwater on Brava, and we could see an explosive eruption. Learn More: http://www.wired.com/2016/08/volcanic-eruptions-indonesia-interfe...

From July 13th to the 30th 2012, I traveled to Cape Verde through the URI faculty-led study abroad program, visiting the islands of Santiago and São Vicente. There, I focused specifically on the history and politics of Cape Verde, as well as the scientific, cultural, economic, environmental, historical, and social importance of the oceans. The main course was AAF 390 Directed Study: Documentary film production of fishing industry and environmental sustainability. With the footage acquired from the trip, I have created a documentary film that portrays the situations within the fishing communities. Properly managing natural resources is crucial for Cape Verdeans. They must get the most use out of what little resources they have without being dependent on anyone else. The biggest resource fo...

Seeing as this was my first holiday since i was a kid, and also my first time away with my boyfriend, i really wanted to document the whole trip with a Vlog as something to look back on. Cape Verde was amazing and i'd definitely recommend a visit! It was cloudy for a few days of our trip but the weather was still great and the sights were beautiful. I couldnt recommend the Riu Touareg hotel more. The staff were ridiculously friendly and the food was amazing (i ate a lot more than i should have). Music - Various tracks.
