Australia has a starring role in this week's episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL), which has poked fun at US President Donald Trump's phone call with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

The sketch features US actor Beck Bennett as a sparse-haired and well-suited Mr Turnbull and Alec Baldwin as Mr Trump as they discuss the Austraila-US refugee deal.

In the oval office, Mr Trump sits with his chief strategist Steve Bannon, played by Mikey Day, as the Grim Reaper.

"I'm tired and cranky and feel like I could just freak out on somebody," Baldwin, aka Mr Trump, says.

A ghoulish Mr Bannon offers Mr Trump a simple solution: "Maybe you should call Australia".

"Really? I haven't been briefed or anything, but what could go wrong?" Mr Trump says.

"Let's do it."

Cue Mr Turnbull.

After some cordial chat over the "Muslim ban", Mr Turnbull thanks the President for accepting Australia's refugees.

"You say what?" Mr Trump replies.

"No refugees. America first. Australia sucks. Your reef is failing. Prepare to go to war," he says, before slamming the phone down.

Details of a tense phone conversation with Mr Turnbull, which Mr Trump reportedly described as "the worst by far", were published by the Washington Post on Thursday.

Mr Trump reportedly accused Mr Turnbull of seeking to export the "next Boston bombers" to the US, and complained that the deal to take refugees from Manus Island and Nauru to the US was going to kill him politically.

Mr Trump later called the exchange "very civil" in a tweet and accused "fake news" media of lying about details of the exchange.

SNL mocks Kellyanne Conway's massacre blunder

In the SNL sketch, Baldwin's Mr Trump claims "everyone loves" his immigration ban, after Mr Turnbull queries him about the backlash.

"We had to do it because of that huge massacre at bowling green," he says — a jab at a gaffe made by White House adviser Kellyanne Conway last week.

"So many people died, but actually they're the lucky ones, because they don't have to see how bad The Apprentice has gotten," Mr Trump says.

Baldwin's Mr Trump then dials Mexico to get them to pay for the border wall, calls Angela Merkel and compares himself to Adolf Hitler, and receives a spray of threats from Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe.

"Hello, is this my sweet Barack? Barack Obama, I miss you," Ms Merkel says.

After complaining that the press had misreported his inauguration numbers, Mr Trump tells Germany's Chancellor he will one day publish a book about his struggle and call it, My Struggle.

Hitler's book Mein Kampf translates to My Struggle.
