Requests for page protection

This page is for requesting that a page, file or template be fully protected, create protected (salted), extended confirmed protected, semi-protected, added to pending changes, move-protected, template protected (template-specific), upload protected (file-specific), or unprotected. Please read up on the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates, semi-protection and pending changes are usually used only to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection), and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars.

After a page has been protected, the protection is listed in the page history and logs with a short description indicating why it was protected, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. Further discussion should take place on the Talk page of the article. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins do not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Instructions

If you would like to request to have a page protected, have a page's existing protection level lowered or raised, or would like to submit an edit request for a protected page, please follow these steps (note: if you enable the Twinkle gadget for your Wikipedia account, this process can be largely automated for you):

  1. If you are requesting unprotection, the correct protocol is to ask the protecting administrator first for unprotection (the admin's user account name can be found in the page's edit history). If for any reason he or she is unresponsive, unwilling, or unable to lower protection then you may list your request on this page.
  2. Add a level 3 header (i.e. === Example title ===) with the namespace if not an article.[clarification needed] Place your request at the bottom of either the protection or unprotection list, depending on the nature of your request, and place the pagelinks template below the header in the form of * Example title. Please make sure you have spelled the name of the article properly; a common error stems from mistaken requests for the protection of redirects, particularly capitalised ones (Twinkle can make sure this never happens to you!).
  3. If you are requesting protection, write the type of request (full protection, semi-protection, pending changes, move protection) and a brief reason for your request below your header.
  4. Please do not add arbitrary requests for a protection expiry time to your request, or request indefinite protection arbitrarily.
    • If there is a reason for a page to be protected for a certain amount of time, such as protecting a user talk page until the user is unblocked, please make this clear.
    • If you are requesting indefinite semi-protection or pending changes, be aware that it is only applied to articles with endemic and endless vandalism problems which multiple increasing periods of temporary semi-protection or pending changes have failed to stop.
    • Note that different expiry times can be set for edit- and for move-protections— thus, an article can, for example, be semi-edit-protected for a week and also fully-move-protected indefinitely.
  5. Sign your request with four tildes ~~~~ and click Save page.
  • Note: editors should not consider requesting page protection as a method for continuing an argument from elsewhere nor as a venue for starting a new discussion regarding article content. If a request contains excessive argument, appears to be intended to resolve a content dispute, includes personal attacks or uncivil comments, or has any other unrelated discussion, it will be removed from this page and no action will be taken.
Examples
For single page requests
Example Article Name
* Example Article Name
Semi-protection: High level of IP vandalism. ~~~~
Template:Example Template Name
* Template:Example Template Name
Reduction in protection level: From full protection to template editor protection. ~~~~
For multiple page requests with the same criteria
Short descriptive header
* Wikipedia:Example Page Name 1
* Wikipedia:Example Page Name 2
Temporary semi-protection: High level of IP vandalism. ~~~~

Current requests for increase in protection level[edit]

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the rolling archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Sinai Peninsula[edit]

Temporary protection: Persistent vandalism. RSTech1 (talk) 16:34, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

I'm tempted to extended confirmed protect this under the WP:ARBPIA remedy, but I'm not sure it's related enough to that. Any other admins have opinions on this? Ks0stm (TCGE) 18:59, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
Given the disruption was only from anons, I'd settle for semi. But I play by different rules :) If I were to go by the auto-ECP stuff, I would say this marginally meets ARBPIA. Content directly related to the conflict appears to be contained within one section, and with limited prose. Digging through, I see good edits from users who aren't extended confirmed, but it seems disruption from unconfirmed users is ongoing, so I wouldn't oppose a more lengthy semi MusikAnimal talk 00:54, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
Note that it was semi-protected by Ponyo for a day. After this semi-prtection expires, I would opt for a long-term semi (such as 6 months or a year) and see whether additional disruption arises.--Ymblanter (talk) 07:47, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
I'd agree with the suggestion of long-term semi: and I'll implement it myself later, unless objections are raised. @Ymblanter, Ks0stm, and MusikAnimal: Vanamonde (talk) 09:03, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Allen West (politician)[edit]

Temporary extended confirmed: BLP policy violations – Following an incident with this politician, 2 IPs, one almost-confirmed user, and two auto-confirmed users have added WP:BLP violations to the article. Ramaksoud2000 (Talk to me) 22:50, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protected for a period of 1 week, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 23:36, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

University of Minnesota[edit]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing – Removal of sourced section on sexual assault based only on user opinion. -- Dane talk 04:26, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 04:52, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

2016 United States election interference by Russia[edit]

Temporary full protection: Too easy for autoconfirmed users to come by and edit. Recommend full protection so that edits are parsed by experienced (and NPOV) editors. Terminate protection in 2 weeks. – S. Rich (talk) 05:32, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Declined "Too easy for autoconfirmed users to edit" is not a policy-based reason for protection, sorry. I'm seeing some disruption, but also some amount of consensus building on the talk, so holding off for now. Vanamonde (talk) 09:19, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Danneel Harris[edit]

Semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Repeated addition of non-notable children names by various IPs. Not happening at Jensen Ackles b/c it is protected. Please protect this page for as long as possible. Thank you. Ebyabe talk - Repel All Boarders ‖ 06:03, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

  • Endorse. IP editors keep adding this info, often unsourced, in violation of WP:BLPNAMES. No discussion, no nothing. And it seems to be a series of throwaway IP's for the purpose. Protection is warranted to prevent this. --IJBall (contribstalk) 06:09, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
Semi-protected for a period of 1 month, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Vanamonde (talk) 09:20, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Lin-Manuel Miranda[edit]

Temporary full protection: Persistent vandalism - Repeated changes to spouse's name, often to another actor by many IPs. - Flami72 (talk) 06:15, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Semi-protected for a period of 6 months, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Samsara 10:11, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Sex and gender distinction[edit]

Temporary semi-protection: Disruptive editing by IPs is increasing in frequency. No constructive edits from unconfirmed users for at least the last four months. Funcrunch (talk) 07:33, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Semi-protected for a period of 18 days, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Samsara 10:14, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

New York Jets[edit]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism. Zupotachyon (talkcontribs) Ping me with 07:46, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Semi-protected for a period of 1 week, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. AustralianRupert (talk) 09:29, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Lin-Manuel Miranda[edit]

Temporary protection: Persistent vandalism by multiple IPs Jim1138 (talk) 08:08, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Semi-protected for a period of 6 months, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Samsara 10:11, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Julio Frenk[edit]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Persistent vandalism. Apparently someone thinks it's cute to keep adding a line about him being called "Frenkenstein". Different IP addresses....possible sock puppetry. RSTech1 (talk) 09:19, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Semi-protected for a period of 6 days, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Samsara 10:11, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
Done Samsara 10:31, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

William Wordsworth[edit]

Semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – PC just isn't cutting it. Almost all of the IP/new account edits are vandalism. Anarchyte (work | talk) 09:35, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Note: One recent vandal blocked by Materialscientist. Samsara 09:57, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
Semi-protected for a period of 3 months, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. I agree with the sentiment that PC allows too much disruption to occur at this point, no matter what blocks we make after the fact. Samsara 09:57, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

2016 Formula One season[edit]

Temporary semi-protection: frequent IP edits that violate NPOV. The edits relate to a collision between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix; the article states that they made contact and retired, but the IP editor keeps changing it to say Rosberg caused the collision. As Rosberg narrowly won the championship, the implication of these edits is that Rosberg deliberately took Hamilton out of the race and is an undeserving champion. Prisonermonkeys (talk) 10:36, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Current requests for reduction in protection level[edit]

Please post requests in this section for removing or reducing the protection level of a page if the protecting admin is inactive or you have already asked them.
  • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "View history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
  • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
  • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
  • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add Edit fully-protected to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check here if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! (UK series 16)[edit]

Unprotection: The show has now finished, and there is no more additions of unsourced content, so I don't really see a need for Pending Changes any more. . Class455 (talk) 11:00, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Pinging MelanieN (who last protected it) and Vanamonde93 (who added auto-review permission) per above statement. Nordic Nightfury 15:33, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
I added semi-protection which has expired. Vanamonde93 added PC protection which expires Jan. 31. If the current history suggests PC is no longer needed, I think it should be up to Vanamonde to make that call. --MelanieN (talk) 18:12, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Current requests for edits to a protected page[edit]

Further information: Wikipedia:Edit requests

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

  • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among Edit protected, Edit template-protected, Edit extended-protected, or Edit semi-protected to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
  • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the request edit template should be used.
  • Page move requests should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
  • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
  • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be locked. Please make requests as long as you have a specific edit you wish to make.
