NASSAU, Bahamas (CMC) — The Organization of American States (OAS) has pledged to cooperate with the Profuturo Foundation, an initiative of Telefónica and the “La Caixa” banking foundation, to implement in the Caribbean the ‘Digital Classroom Project’.

The project offers “a technological solution to bring digital education to hundreds of thousands of children and young people in the Americas,” including the Caribbean.

OAS – through its Inter-American Telecommunications Commission (CITEL) and Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI) – and Profuturo on Friday formalised the cooperation through an agreement signed on Friday at the Ninth Ministerial Meeting on Education Ministers in the Americas in Nassau, Bahamas.

“CITEL and Profuturo are working hand in hand to improve the quality of education, through digital education in highly vulnerable areas in Latin America and the Caribbean,” said CITEL Executive Secretary, Oscar León.

Also signing on behalf of the OAS was SEDI Executive Secretary Kim Osborne.

Director General of Profuturo, Sofía Fernández de Mesa, said that the implementation of ITCs in education allows for a broader coverage, “which leads in turn to greater quality at lesser cost, while, at the same time, democratising access to information, and improving access to opportunities for all”.

Through the agreement, the OAS and Telefónica has called on Caribbean countries to take part in the activities of the Digital Mobile Classroom, starting in January 2018.

The programme is an offline platform that aims to improve quality education through digital resources that provide access to quality and transformational education, creating more inclusive spaces and focusing on the enhancement of teacher skills, methods and competencies through digital technologies, the OAS said.
