The 2015 Ava Helen and Linus Pauling Memorial Lecture for World Peace at Oregon State University was given by American historian, writer, and feminist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz. Today in the United States, there are more than five hundred federally recognized Indigenous nations comprising nearly three million people, descendants of the fifteen million Native people who once inhabited this land. The centuries-long genocidal program of the US settler-colonial regimen has largely been omitted from history. Now, for the first time, acclaimed historian and activist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz offers a history of the United States told from the perspective of Indigenous peoples and reveals how Native Americans, for centuries, actively resisted expansion of the US empire. Dunbar-Ortiz adroitly challenges the founding myth of the United States and shows how policies against the Indigenous peoples was colonialist and designed to seize the territories of the original inhabitants, displacing or eliminating them. This classic bottom-up peoples’ history radically reframes US history and explodes the silences that have haunted our national narrative. The issues to which Ava Helen Pauling committed herself for five decades weigh on us even more urgently today: world peace, justice, human rights, and the preservation of wilderness and natural areas. To underscore the importance of these causes and to honor the woman who championed them, the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University established in 1982 the Ava Helen Pauling Lectureship for World Peace. In 1995 Linus’s name was included to make the Lectureship a Memorial to this remarkable couple, both of whom attended Oregon State. This lecture was sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts, the School of History, Philosophy, and Religion, and the School of Public Policy at Oregon State University. This sad, sweet, little traditional Northumbrian song had only two surviving verses and it always felt as though part of the story was missing. Helen wrote the two middle verses to clarify her interpretation of the song. David uses harmonies written by Derek Hobbs. This arrangement is by Helen Capes and David Dunbar who perform as Meat and Veg. The reference to walking inland with an oar (stick in his hand) until it is not recognised, is mentioned in Homer's Odyssey as a way of leaving the sea.

Enjoy a $10 million mansion & world-class reefs at rates more affordable than Cozumel. Call our tropical vacation team at U.S. Dive Travel: 952-953-4124. Web: www.usdivetravel.com. Dunbar Villa comfortably serves 4-16 guests. Both divers & non-divers are warmly welcome. The Villa's 15,000 square feet + many meeting areas + delightful pool + roomy dining salon are ideal for corporate retreats, family reunions, weddings & special groups from dive shops, clubs or missions teams on R & R. ************************************************* This video features about 4 min's 30 sec's of Dunbar Villa slides; then another 4:30 of Guanaja diving slides by our friend Roy Small. Then we show topside photos of Bonacca Town & dive boat scenes plus 3 aerial shots of Guanaja by our friend John Pohle. Finally there's a quick film clip of the Dunbar Villa dive boat & guide. ************************************************* Reminiscent of a luxury mansion on the Greek Mediterranean, the Villa at Dunbar Rock is an exotic vacation destination on Guanaja Island -- about 45 miles off the North Coast of Honduras in the Bay Islands. Represented by U.S. Dive Travel Network, Dunbar Villa was designed & built by a Texas real estate developer -- who loves to dive -- for folks who relish scuba diving & snorkeling vacations, or off-the-beaten-path Caribbean getaways. Service at Dunbar Villa is prompt, courteous & always friendly. For years now, the staff motto has been "Arrive as a Guest, Leave as a Friend." The two miracles of Dunbar Villa are these: (1) In the 20+ years we have helped hundreds of clients visit Guanaja, this lovely island never got scarred by heavy tourism or crass commercialism. No cruise ships, no Spring Break hordes. Just clean air & water & brilliant reefs teeming with life. (2) Villa owners have rolled rates back to 4 years ago, where prices were during the Recession -- well below that of most luxury Cozumel, Cayman or Bahamas resorts. Yet the quality of service & luxury amenities are still a solid 4 stars. Dunbar Villa was first built in 1998 & recently renovated to more than double its previous floor space & luxury index. Valued at nearly USD $10 million, this mansion is solidly anchored onto a huge flat-topped rock, nestled in tranquil Sandy Bay on Guanaja's protected southern shore. Dunbar Villa is about 300 meters from the beach, perched over gentle clear ocean waters that abound with healthy multi-colored fish, corals & sponges. Now expanded to a 4-story 15,000-square-foot lodge, Dunbar Villa offers 8 clean ocean-view guest rooms with spacious balconies, large tile showers & personally-controlled A/C. The Villa also features a comfy living room with widescreen TV + an excellent sound system. Wi-fi is available nearly 24/7 & the cooks are wonderful. They will meet your heart's desire... Managed by Denis Midence, the most experienced & personable diving guide in our Western Caribbean network, this property is perfect for small groups seeking a pristine escape from tourist traps. Our delighted clients over the years have included teachers, nurses, military men & women, firefighters, prep school groups on marine biology studies, missions teams from medical centers or churches across the USA, plus top execs from Fortune 400 firms. Also Hollywood & Silicon Valley execs & scores of fun-loving couples & families from all walks of life. Children under thoughtful adult supervision are always warmly welcome in the Villa at Dunbar Rock. Cool news: Dunbar Villa owners are building a special access ramp from the boat dock to the 2nd floor, to allow disabled folks & also slower-moving seniors to take a golf cart up Dunbar Rock -- quick as a wink! A luxurious infinity pool will be located right below the south wall of the dining room, giving guests a sweeping territorial view of the Guanaja Fringing Reef. Also coming soon are a huge waterfront dive shop at the dock level, plus a new gym space, a conference room & a helicopter pad atop the building for easy VIP access. ************************************************* For more information or to book reservations, please call our planning team at U.S. Dive Travel: 952-953-4124. ************************************************* These HD slides & video clips were shot by U.S. Dive Travel founder/GM John Hessburg, & edited by L.J. Dunbar (Scotts [dʊnˈbaɾ] ( listen)) is a town in East Lothian on the southeast coast of Scotland, approximately 28 miles (45 km) east of Edinburgh and 28 miles (45 km) from the English Border at Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Dunbar is a former Royal Burgh and gave its name to an ecclesiastical and civil parish. The parish extends around 7½ miles east to west and is 3½ miles deep at greatest extent (12 x 5.5 kilometres) or 11¼ square miles (c. 3000 hectares) and contains the villages of West Barns, Belhaven, East Barns (abandoned) and several hamlets and farms.
Its strategic position gave rise to a history full of incident and strife but Dunbar has become a quiet dormitory town popular with workers in nearby Edinburgh, who find it an affordable alternative to the capital itself. Until the 1960s the population of the town was little more than 3,500.
The town is served by Dunbar railway station. Dunbar is home to the Dunbar Lifeboat Station, the second oldest RNLI station in Scotland.
Helen Dunbar (October 10, 1863 – August 28, 1933) was an American theatrical performer and silent film actress.
Born Katheryn Burke Lackey in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she first appeared with the Weber & Fields Stock Company, when it began its career on the New York stage. In 1899 she appeared in Whirl-i-gig and The Other Way at the Weber and Fields Broadway Music Hall. She also worked with the Charles Dillingham Company and the Boston Opera Company. She appeared in motion pictures beginning in 1912 and continued until 1926. Her stage and screen career extended over thirty-five years.
Dunbar's film career started with Out of the Depths (1912). The production starred Francis X. Bushman. She became a leading lady for the old Essanay Studios. For a number of years she was under contract to Famous Players-Lasky. Aside from Bushman, Dunbar made films with stars like Harry Cashman, Richard Carroll, Ruth Stonehouse, Beverly Bayne, Frank Keenan, John Gilbert, Mary Astor, Phyllis Haver, Norma Talmadge, and Noah Beery. Her final movie was Stranded In Paris (1926), which featured Bebe Daniels and Tom Ricketts.
Rudolph Valentino (May 6, 1895 – August 23, 1926) was an Italian actor, known simply as "Valentino" and also an early pop icon. A sex symbol of the 1920s, Valentino was known as the "Latin Lover". He starred in several well-known silent films including The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Sheik, Blood and Sand, The Eagle and Son of the Sheik. He had applied for American citizenship shortly before his death.
His sudden death at age 31 caused mass hysteria among his female fans, further propelling him into icon status. Though his films are not as well known today, his name is still widely known.
Valentino was born Rodolfo Alfonso Raffaello Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina D'Antonguolla in Castellaneta, Puglia, Kingdom of Italy. His mother, Marie Berta Gabrielle (née Barbin; 1856–1919), was French, born in Lure in Lorraine. His father, Giovanni Antonio Giuseppe Fedele Guglielmi di Valentina D'Antonguolla, was Italian; he was a veterinarian who died of malaria when Valentino was 11. He had an older brother, Alberto (1892–1981), a younger sister, Maria, and an older sister Beatrice who died in infancy.
