Privacy

We have developed our site so that you can visit it without identifying yourself or revealing any personal information to us. We do not track visitors to our site as they access other sites. We collect personally identifying data about you, such as your name, address and e-mail address, only when you provide it to us voluntarily.

We do not share your personal data with any third parties other than some common service providers who use the information only to help us improve our site. Some of these services provide social media conveniences for our readers, while others help us serve banner ads and measure traffic. These services may place cookies on your computer. We don't have any way of knowing how each service handles your data internally.

Here are the services you can find on ProPublica.org:

  • Sharing buttons for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+. These use the standard scripts provided by each company.
  • Banner ads served by  Public Media Interactive (an NPR spinoff company), advertising.com (owned by Aol) and Google AdSense, using those companies' ad serving platforms.
  • Google Analytics, which we use to measure site traffic.
  • Chartbeat, which helps us see traffic patterns in real time.
  • Typekit, owned by Adobe Systems Inc., and other cloud-based typeface services.
  • RebelMouse, which provides social bookmarking for our MuckReads feature.
  • NewRelic, a service that helps us track site errors and slowdowns.

Remember that no data transmitted over the Internet can be guaranteed to be completely secure. You provide us with this data at your own risk. Our servers are located in the United States. If you are located outside of the U.S., by sending us your data you consent to its transfer to and storage within the United States.

By accessing this site, you agree to be legally bound by and comply with this User Agreement. If you do not agree to comply with this User Agreement, you are not authorized to use this site.
