THE GATE #LOVEPULSES
2016 marks the International Year of Pulses (IYOP), the single largest opportunity to increase awareness of pulses many of us will ever see. Pulses, also known as grain legumes, are a group of 12 crops that includes dry beans, dry peas, chickpeas and lentils. They are high in protein, fibre, and various vitamins, provide amino acids, and are hearty crops. Not only do pulses provide countless health benefits such as helping decrease blood cholesterol levels and aiding digestion and regularity, they also play a pivotal role in sustainability as they require less fertilisers than other crops and are a low carbon source of protein.
Alongside this it’s also important to recognise the economical importance of pulses. Did you know that 70% of pulses produced globally come from developing countries such as India, which produces a quarter of the world’s pulses. It is with this in mind that The Gate Restaurant is proud to support the IYOP and join forces “To act for a healthy, hunger-free and sustainable world.”
The Gate Restaurant was excited to host Pulse Feast UK in our Islington branch on January 6th 2016 to start the celebrations for the 2016 IYOP where guests were treated to an international menu featuring all kinds of pulses. We look forward to an amazing year filled with all kinds of pulses inspired dishes. For more information into the IYOP visit http://www.iyp2016.org/ or #LovePulses
