[PLEASE READ] Video dedicated to Miss Maureen O’Hara in Boise, Idaho, USA (or where'er she may be). Almost five years before director John Ford’s RIO GRANDE (1950), there was director Ray Nazarro’s THROW A SADDLE ON A STAR (1946). Actor/singer Ken Curtis appeared in both motion pictures singing lyrics from the song “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen” by Thomas P. Westendorf. But note the contrasts between the two appearances. In the former (and more famous) film, Ken, playing a regimental singer, leads his fellow Sons of the Pioneers in an evening outdoor serenade of—appropriately—“Mrs. KATHLEEN Yorke” (Maureen O’Hara), who is accompanied by her husband “Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke” (John Wayne). However, in the latter film, the context is completely different. Ken, playing a hotshot rodeo star, is alone currying his grateful horse in its stall after a daytime competition. It is in this environment that he sings the wistful lyrics, daydreaming of his love interest, “Barbara Allen” (Adele Roberts). Perhaps because HER name isn’t “Kathleen,” Ken agreed to sing the first line of the chorus thus: “Oh! I will take you back AGAIN” As opposed to the original’s “Oh! I will take you back, KATHLEEN.” Er, get it? Both song renditions—however literally incomplete or unfaithful to the original—are superbly interpreted by Ken with his pearly pipes.
“Lest we forget”: Ken Curtis’s long and legendary association with the unkempt “hick” role of “Festus Haggen” in TV’s “GUNSMOKE” unfortunately obscures his earlier work as a heroic, crooning leading man. With his warm, intelligent demeanor and pearly voice raised eloquently in song, he made more than half a dozen Columbia Westerns in this more distinguished or “clean-cut” vein, often teamed with Guinn “Big Boy” Williams and the ingenious, novelty musical troupe The Hoosier Hotshots.

Bette Rogge Morse graduated from the University of Dayton in 1944. She received her masters degree from UD in 1977. She served on the University's Board of Trustees from 1975 to 1981. Ken Curtis joined the Sons of the Pioneers as a lead singer from 1949 to 1952. Now, for the seemingly ever increasing number of people who are saying, "who were they?", the Sons of the Pioneers were and are the foremost western vocal group in history. Ken's big hits with the group included "Room Full of Roses" and "Riders in the Sky". The Sons also worked in radio and on film soundtracks, including Rio Grande (1950), for director John Ford, who was a big fan.
The Searchers (1956) is considered by many to be a true American masterpiece of filmmaking, and the best, most influential, and perhaps most-admired film of director John Ford.
The opening credits (portrayed in a Playbill fontface) are displayed before a backdrop of an adobe brick wall. The words of the romantic Stan Jones ballad (sung by The Sons of the Pioneers) that play during the credits, What Makes a Man to Wander?, define the central theme of the film - one man's wanderings and obsessive search:
What makes a man to wander?
What makes a man to roam?
What makes a man leave bed and board
And turn his back on home?
Ride away, ride away, ride away.
The Searchers (Der schwarze Falke)tells the emotionally complex story of a perilous, hate-ridden quest and Homeric-style odyssey of self-discovery after a Comanche massacre, while also exploring the themes of racial prejudice and sexism. Its meandering tale examines the inner psychological turmoil of a fiercely independent, crusading man obsessed with revenge and hatred, who searches for his two nieces (Pippa Scott and Natalie Wood) among the "savages" over a five-year period. The film's major tagline echoed the search: "he had to find her...he had to find her."
John Wayne, the "Duke," had already played many major roles in numerous westerns in his career, including The Big Trail (1930), The Spoilers (1942), Howard Hawks' Red River (1948), and The Fighting Kentuckian (1949), and had appeared in five previous Ford westerns, including: Stagecoach (1939), 3 Godfathers (1948), Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), and Rio Grande (1950) -- and would appear in a few more, including: The Horse Soldiers (1959) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). In this film, his first anti-heroic role, he was a bigot and racist - a tragic, lonely, morally-ambiguous figure perenially doomed to be an outsider. It was a role that the actor often described as his favorite. It is commonly regarded as Wayne's finest-acted performance - and his ninth starring role in a Ford film. [Wayne's other Ford films, four non-westerns, included: The Long Voyage Home (1940), They Were Expendable (1945), The Quiet Man (1952), and The Wings of Eagles (1957).]

Ken Curtis
Ken Curtis (July 2, 1916 – April 28, 1991) was an American singer and actor best known for his role as Festus Haggen on the long-running CBS western television series Gunsmoke. Although he appeared on Gunsmoke in other roles he first appeared in his iconic role along in season 8 and episode 13, "Us Haggens." His next appearance was with his mule Ruth in "Prairie Wolfer," season 9 and episode 16, also featuring Noah Beery, Jr. as the episode's villain.
Biography
Early years
Though born Curtis Wain Gates in Lamar in Prowers County in southeastern Colorado, Curtis was reared west of there in Las Animas, the seat of Bent County. His father, Dan Gates, was the Bent County sheriff. The family lived above the jail and his mother, Nellie Sneed Gates, cooked for the prisoners. The jail is now located for historical preservation purposes on the grounds of the Bent County courthouse in Las Animas.
Curtis played quarterback for his high school football team. During World War II, Curtis served in the United States Army. (1943–1945)

Slim Pickens
Louis Burton Lindley, Jr. (June 29, 1919 – December 8, 1983), better known by his stage name Slim Pickens, was an American rodeo performer and film and television actor. During much of his career Pickens played mainly cowboy roles, and is perhaps best remembered today for his comic roles in Dr. Strangelove and Blazing Saddles.
Early life
Pickens was born Louis Burton Lindley, Jr., in Kingsburg, California, the son of Sally Mosher (née Turk) and Louis Bert Lindley, Sr., a Texas-born dairy farmer. Young Lindley was an excellent horse rider from an early age. Known as "Bert" to his family and friends, he grew bored with dairy farming and began to make a few dollars by riding broncs and roping steers in his early teens. His father found out and forbade this activity. Nevertheless, young Lindley went to compete in a rodeo and was told by the doubtful rodeo manager that there would be "slim pickin's" for him. To prevent his father from discovering that he had competed, he entered his name as Slim Pickens and won $400 that afternoon.

[PLEASE READ] Video dedicated to Miss Maureen O’Hara in Boise, Idaho, USA (or where'er she may be). Almost five years before director John Ford’s RIO GRANDE (1950), there was director Ray Nazarro’s THROW A SADDLE ON A STAR (1946). She served on the University's Board of Trustees from 1975 to 1981. For her service to the community and university, Bette was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in 1999. Almost five years before director John Ford’s RIO GRANDE (1950), there was director Ray Nazarro’s THROW A SADDLE ON A STAR (1946). Actor/singer Ken Curtis appeared in both motion pictures singing lyrics from the song “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen” by Thomas P. Westendorf. But note the contrasts between the two appearances. I will take you back, KATHLEEN.” Er, get it? Both song renditions—however literally incomplete or unfaithful to the original—are superbly interpreted by Ken with his pearly pipes.
“Lest we forget”: Ken Curtis’s long and legendary association with the unkempt “hick” role of “Festus Haggen” in TV’s “GUNSMOKE” unfortunately obscures his earlier work as a heroic, crooning leading man. With his warm, intelligent demeanor and pearly voice raised eloquently in song, he made more than half a dozen Columbia Westerns in this more distinguished or “clean-cut” vein, often teamed with Guinn “Big Boy” Williams and the ingenious, novelty musical troupe The Hoosier Hotshots.

Now, for the seemingly ever increasing number of people who are saying, "who were they?", the Sons of the Pioneers were and are the foremost western vocal group in history. Ken's big hits with the group included "Room Full of Roses" and "Riders in the Sky". The Sons also worked in radio and on film soundtracks, including Rio Grande (1950), for director John Ford, who was a big fan.
The Searchers (1956) is considered by many to be a true American masterpiece of filmmaking, and the best, most influential, and perhaps most-admired film of director John Ford.
The opening credits (portrayed in a Playbill fontface) are displayed before a backdrop of an adobe brick wall. The words of the romantic Stan Jones ballad (sung by The Sons of the Pioneers) that play during the credits, What Makes a Man to Wander?, define the central theme of the film - one man's wanderings and obsessive search:

What makes a man leave bed and board
And turn his back on home?
Ride away, ride away, ride away.
The Searchers (Der schwarze Falke)tells the emotionally complex story of a perilous, hate-ridden quest and Homeric-style odyssey of self-discovery after a Comanche massacre, while also exploring the themes of racial prejudice and sexism. Its meandering tale examines the inner psychological turmoil of a fiercely independent, crusading man obsessed with revenge and hatred, who searches for his two nieces (Pippa Scott and Natalie Wood) among the "savages" over a five-year period. The film's major tagline echoed the search: "he had to find her...he had to find her."
John Wayne, the "Duke," had already played many major roles in numerous westerns in his career, including The Big Trail (1930), The Spoilers (1942), Howard Hawks' Red River (1948), and The Fighting Kentuckian (1949), and had appeared in five previous Ford westerns, including: Stagecoach (1939), 3 Godfathers (1948), Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), and Rio Grande (1950) -- and would appear in a few more, including: The Horse Soldiers (1959) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). In this film, his first anti-heroic role, he was a bigot and racist - a tragic, lonely, morally-ambiguous figure perenially doomed to be an outsider. It was a role that the actor often described as his favorite. It is commonly regarded as Wayne's finest-acted performance - and his ninth starring role in a Ford film. All Star Western Theatre was broadcast from Hollywood in the late 1940’s. A glossy, star-studded variety show, its stated purpose was to evoke the Old West by “bringing you the music, stories and the spirit of the great open spaces”.
The show starred Foy Willing and the Riders of the Purple Sage, and presented stories that incorporated the show’s regular performers and a weekly guest star—usually a luminary from western movies and music--including Smiley Burnette, Tex Ritter, Johnny Mack Brown, Jackie Cooper, Eddy Arnold, Preston Foster, Hank Williams and “the glamour girl of the west”, Dale Evans. Each show was richly interspersed with musical performances by the guests and the Riders of the Purple Sage, who were famous for many of their recordings, including “Red River Valley”, “Hang your Head in Shame”, “Rose of San Antone”, and “Cool, Cool Water”.
The stories are consistently well-presented and charming. The music is typical of what used to be called Cowboy music, with its characteristic close harmony, acoustic guitar and harmonica, a close relative of the old Child Ballads, both in structure and theme. Whether or not you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll find the renditions of these songs excellent and compelling.

All Star Western Theatre was broadcast from Hollywood in the late 1940’s. A glossy, star-studded variety show, its stated purpose was to evoke the Old West by “bringing you the music, stories and the spirit of the great open spaces”.
The show starred Foy Willing and the Riders of the Purple Sage, and presented stories that incorporated the show’s regular performers and a weekly guest star—usually a luminary from western movies and music--including Smiley Burnette, Tex Ritter, Johnny Mack Brown, Jackie Cooper, Eddy Arnold, Preston Foster, Hank Williams and “the glamour girl of the west”, Dale Evans. Each show was richly interspersed with musical performances by the guests and the Riders of the Purple Sage, who were famous for many of their recordings, including “Red River Valley”, “Hang your Head in Shame”, “Rose of San Antone”, and “Cool, Cool Water”.
The stories are consistently well-presented and charming. The music is typical of what used to be called Cowboy music, with its characteristic close harmony, acoustic guitar and harmonica, a close relative of the old Child Ballads, both in structure and theme. Whether or not you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll find the renditions of these songs excellent and compelling.

He played the clarinet and tenor sax in bands during college. In 1931 he played at the Roseland Ballroom.By 1933 he led a band that played at Grossinger's Catskill Resort Hotel. In 1934 he replaced the Jack Denny Orchestra at the Hotel Pierre in New York City. He left the Hotel Pierre to join a roadshow with the dancers, Veloz and Yolanda. In 1936 he was booked at Chicago's Palmer House, and the concert was broadcast on radio.
Fields was at a soda fountain when his wife was blowing bubbles into her soda through a straw, and that sound became his trademark that opened each of his shows. A contest was held in Chicago for fans to suggest a new name for the Fields band, in keeping with the new sound. The word "rippling" was suggested in more than one entry, and Fields came up with "Rippling Rhythm."
In 1936 he received a recording contract with Bluebird Records. His hits included "Cathedral in the Pines", "Did I Remember?", and "Thanks for the Memory". In 1937 Fields replaced Paul Whiteman in his time slot with a radio show called The Rippling Rhythm Revue with Bob Hope as the announcer.In 1938, Fields and Hope were featured in his first feature-length motion picture, The Big Broadcast of 1938.
In 1941 Fields revamped the band into an all-reeds group, with no brass section. "Shep Fields and His New Music," featuring band vocalist Ken Curtis. He reverted to "Rippling Rhythm" in 1947.
The group disbanded in 1963.He moved to Houston, Texas where he worked as a disc jockey. He later worked at Creative Management Associates with his brother Freddie Fields in Los Angeles. He died on February 23, 1981 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles from a heart attack. He was buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery in New York.
