The Material
For the New York City band of the same name, see Material (band)
The Material is an American rock quintet from San Diego, California. Colleen D'Agostino (vocals) moved to San Diego to pursue a music degree at San Diego State University. In her third year, she began playing with Jon Moreaux (guitar) and Noah Vowles (drums). The three added bassist Kevin Falk, formerly of Every Time I Die and Between the Buried and Me, and started writing songs for their first demo. Kevin was replaced by Brian Miller (bass), and Roi Elam (guitar) joined shortly after. With the permanent line up, The Material went into the studio to record their 6-song debut EP "Tomorrow", which was co-produced by Brian Grider and was released on September 1, 2007. They placed in the top three of the Dew Circuit Breakout of 2007, losing to Seattle band The Myriad.
The Material has been featured on MTV and MTV2 and their song "Moving to Seattle" is also available to download for the video game, Rock Band. They have toured the entire United States and in September 2009, headlined the coast-to-coast Everlasting Sound Tour with the bands Blameshift and And Then There Was You.

Conditionals: the material conditional
In this video, I examine the material analysis of indicative conditionals: the view that "if A then B" is true just in case A is false or B is true. First, I give a prima facie problem for this analysis: the paradoxes of material implication. I then examine two attempts to defend the material analysis from this problem: Paul Grice's defence, which draws on his theory of conversational implicature; and Frank Jackson's, which draws on the theory conventional implicature and the concept of robustness. Finally I note some further problems that neither of these defences address. For further reading, I strongly recommend Jonathan Bennett's "A Philosophical Guide to Conditionals", chapters 2 and 3. Meet Lydia Davis, one of the most important short story writers in America today. She reads from her prose and talks about her family background, her influences, her struggle to find her literary form and how her stories emerge from her personal life.
"The urge to write goes back to the urge to make anything, just to make it and make it out of language. There is a certain pleasure in taking raw material that is even messy and difficult and shaping it into something, I am not sure whether you get rid of something, but at least you have something made you feel good about."
Lydia Davis was brought up in an atmosphere of writing: Both of her parents worked with writing and "language was always discussed," she says, and they encouraged her to write and she read aloud for them. Davis mentions Russell Edson, who is considered a master of short narrative, as a great inspiration, besides Samuel Beckett.
A lot of her stories take their point of departure from her own life, she states, but in order to give it “a complete form” she needs to distance herself from the personal: "Once I shape it properly and give it the right rhythm and language I think if it was more casually written it would cross the line to confession and would be more uncomfortable, it would not be a finished made thing."
Lydia Davis (b. 1947) is regarded as "the master of form largely of her own invention." She has written a number of collections of short stories and one novel. When Davis received the Man Booker International Prize in 2013 the chairman of the judges said her "writings fling their lithe arms wide to embrace many a kind. Just how to categorise them? They have been called stories but could equally be miniatures, anecdotes, essays, jokes, parables, fables, texts, aphorisms or even apophthegms, prayers or simply observations." Davis is also an acclaimed translator of e.g. Proust, Flaubert and Maurice Blanchot.
Lydia Davis was interviewed on stage by Christian Lund at the Louisiana Literature Festival 22 August 2014, at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark.
