La Trobe confirming that although 239 staff have opted to take voluntary redundancies and staff have voted to support a 10% pay cut, we will still be looking at 215-415 forced redundancies later this year

66% of staff have voted yes to a jobs protection framework that includes 10% pay cuts and cuts to working hours, to save an estimated 225 jobs. Follows an earlier vote that was also in favour.

The share price of Qantas has recovered from its Covid period low of around $2 to $5. So why does it still collect millions in subsidies funded by Australian taxpayers? At these prices it would have no problem accessing capital. The subsidies are just benefiting shareholders!

So let me get this right. The first workers to be thrown off by the Morrison Gov are childcare workers. A sector where 95% of workers are underpaid women. This as well as ending free childcare. All when we know women are losing jobs and hours at a faster rate than men.

Protestors take a minute silence to reflect on the deaths of black and Aboriginal deaths in custody at the Melbourne rally. The only sound to be heard is a helicopter hovering overhead

With the tragic events in the USA attracting the worlds attention, we are reminded that, per head of population, Indigenous Australians are the most jailed people in the world. We must do better!

The role of government consumption in the March quarter is obvious from the chart below: it reached 20% of GDP, similar to the levels of the 1990s recession. In the June quarter this will rise further and investment is likely to be higher too.

La Trobe University is in serious financial trouble and it may not be the only one. The government encouraged the use of overseas students to subsidise the sector and with that collapsing it’s now looking the other way.

Democracy warrior, or attention-seeking court jester? The list of 's supporters is quite something. But will it save him from expulsion on Friday? Latest from me.

Bernard Collaery statement on way into pre-trial on today. A case that makes me profoundly uncomfortable and that should be watched closely, if that’s allowed.
