Lady in leather! Smiling Queen Maxima of the Netherlands steps out in an edgy plum pencil skirt on a visit to a design school in east Germany

  • Dutch Queen, 45, wore a plum leather skirt with coordinating heels and clutch
  • Teamed it with her trusty taupe cape and another pillbox style hat
  • Visited the Bauhaus Dessau design school with husband King Willem-Alexander

It's a look more often associated with rock royalty than the real deal.

But Queen Maxima of the Netherlands showed exactly how to work leather into an elegant wardrobe in east Germany today.

The 45-year-old was the picture of refinement in a knee-length plum leather skirt with co-ordinating gloves, clutch and heels as she visited the Bauhaus Dessau with her husband King Willem-Alexander as part of the couple's German state visit.

The shade was perfectly complemented by her taupe top and the same taupe cape the Queen wore yesterday to visit the European Energy Exchange in Leipzig.

Maxima also gave a glimpse into the size of her hat collection, as she sported another pillbox shaped headpiece virtually identical to the one she wore yesterday.

A dramatic butterfly brooch and coordinating gold earrings completed Maxima's striking winter look.

The smiling Queen waved to well-wishers as she arrived at the design school with her husband, as the couple draw close to the end of their official state visit to Germany.

They also visited Oranienbaum Castle today.
