The Legend of Romeo, the Lonely Wolf, has spread around the world. I filmed these video clips on 3/15/09, at Romeo's place here in Alaska. I am deeply indebted to youtube user Prophiscient, who was able to rescue my badly damaged close-up clip of Romeo running. He was able to determine a problem existed with the frame order, something way over my head, and devised a special avisynth script to cure the problem. He is the best of the best, and this video would look lousy without his expert help, which he so freely and generously gave to me. Mr. P if you ever come to Alaska, I will make sure you have the time of your life... As far as I am concerned, this movie is copyright 2009 by floydstinkyboy under the creative commons 3.0 attribution - noncommercial - share and share alike license. Bears are fairly common in downtown Juneau, this guy was climbing around on our roof yesterday. He sure was itchy and incredibly agile.
This bears was probably drawn to downtown Juneau by garbage and other delicious aromas. This particular alley is often littered with trash from local winos and must have smelled appealing.
There's been an effort to enforce bear proof garbage containers which has done a lot for the problem but "bear proof" doesn't always mean bear proof to these clever animals and sometime they get bold enough to skip the bin and break directly into homes and businesses.
I know several people who have had bears in their homes and while I haven't heard of them hurting anyone, there's a frightening potential for a physical encounter. My dad had a few cubs wander into his house and my mom had a bear climb in her bedroom window and get away with a bag of sugar a couple years back. Live here long enough and you'll probably have a bear story too.
The story of this particular bear has a sad ending. He was hauled away and killed not long after being darted. A news article mentions that this is likely the same bear that invaded a downtown yogurt shop and was seen climbing on another rooftop in the area. He was a repeat offender and was getting far too comfortable around people. I don't know if it would have been possible to relocate him but some attempts to relocate has been unsuccessful and expensive.
If you're concerned about bears, please keep Juneau tidy and store your garbage indoors until garbage day.

The City and Borough of Juneau (/ˈdʒuːnoʊ/; Tlingit: Dzánti K'ihéeni [ˈtsántʰì kʼìˈhíːnì]) is the capital city of Alaska. It is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the Alaskan panhandle, and it is the second largest city in the United States by area. Juneau has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of what was then the District of Alaska was moved from Sitka as dictated by the U.S. Congress in 1900. The municipality unified on July 1, 1970, when the city of Juneau merged with the city of Douglas and the surrounding Greater Juneau Borough to form the current municipality, which is larger by area than both Rhode Island and Delaware.
Downtown Juneau 58°18′07″N 134°25′11″W / 58.30194°N 134.41972°W / 58.30194; -134.41972 is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island. As of the 2010 census, the City and Borough had a population of 31,275. In 2014, the population estimate from the United States Census Bureau was 32,406, making it the second most populous city in Alaska after Anchorage.Fairbanks, however, is the second most populous metropolitan area in the state, with more than 99,000 residents. Juneau's daily population can increase by roughly 6,000 people from visiting cruise ships between the months of May and September.

The Legend of Romeo, the Lonely Wolf, has spread around the world. I filmed these video clips on 3/15/09, at Romeo's place here in Alaska. I am deeply indebted to youtube user Prophiscient, who was able to rescue my badly damaged close-up clip of Romeo running. He was able to determine a problem existed with the frame order, something way over my head, and devised a special avisynth script to cure the problem. He is the best of the best, and this video would look lousy without his expert help, which he so freely and generously gave to me. Mr. P if you ever come to Alaska, I will make sure you have the time of your life... As far as I am concerned, this movie is copyright 2009 by floydstinkyboy under the creative commons 3.0 attribution - noncommercial - share and share alike license. Bears are fairly common in downtown Juneau, this guy was climbing around on our roof yesterday. He sure was itchy and incredibly agile.
This bears was probably drawn to downtown Juneau by garbage and other delicious aromas. This particular alley is often littered with trash from local winos and must have smelled appealing.
There's been an effort to enforce bear proof garbage containers which has done a lot for the problem but "bear proof" doesn't always mean bear proof to these clever animals and sometime they get bold enough to skip the bin and break directly into homes and businesses.
I know several people who have had bears in their homes and while I haven't heard of them hurting anyone, there's a frightening potential for a physical encounter. My dad had a few cubs wander into his house and my mom had a bear climb in her bedroom window and get away with a bag of sugar a couple years back. Live here long enough and you'll probably have a bear story too.
The story of this particular bear has a sad ending. He was hauled away and killed not long after being darted. A news article mentions that this is likely the same bear that invaded a downtown yogurt shop and was seen climbing on another rooftop in the area. He was a repeat offender and was getting far too comfortable around people. I don't know if it would have been possible to relocate him but some attempts to relocate has been unsuccessful and expensive.
If you're concerned about bears, please keep Juneau tidy and store your garbage indoors until garbage day.

Originally a fishing outpost for local Tlingit Native Americans, the area now known as Juneau was founded in 1880 after 2 prospectors—Richard Harris and Joseph Juneau—discovered gold, thanks to help by Chief Kowee of the Auk Tlingit Tribe. Shortly thereafter, the town, originally called Harrisburg, was struck with "gold fever" and began to flourish, followed by hard-rock mining, sawmilling, canning and an expanding fishing industry. Juneau became the capital of Alaska in 1906.
Today, Juneau remains a treasured tourist destination that includes not only a Tlingit Native American influence, but also a tradition steeped in Russian culture. Boasting timeless natural wonders, museums and the historic sites, Juneau continues to stir the imaginations of all who visit.

Culture Shock, is a documentary about my personal experience while traveling from Juneau, Alaska to India and Nepal. I am the project founder and artist, Saffron Hayes, and I started filming the documentary during the summer of 2004. After finishing high school in Alaska, I traveled to southern India, Madras, and helped build an Ashram on the beach of a fishing village in Pondicherry. After filming the beach and city life of southern India, I independently traveled north to Vanarsi city on the Ganges River, where the Indian people spiritually burn the dead in Ghats. I decided to leave India to spend time with the mountain people of Nepal, where I documented their traditional way of life. I trekked north, deeper into the Himalayan Mountains, until I reached Srinagar Kashmir and climbed 3,500 meters above sea level to see the alien terrain and razor peaks. I trekked far away from urban life to experience the vast beauty of the Himalayan mountain landscape and document the cultural connection with the land.
The documentary follows the life of a young man growing up and traveling to the other side of the world and back. Going on this world adventure and documenting the culture differences, the audience will have a chance to see how different cultures deal with the psychological difficulties accompanied by a post-modern society. This is an enormous project that has taken me eight years to get this far, but I want to share my life experiences with the world.

United Way of Southeast Alaska worked with the Juneau Jumpers to do health workshops with students in Kake, Alaska. With the generous support from the Rasmuson Foundation, United Way was able to inspire excitement among the Kake school children by taking 9 Juneau Jumpers to Kake. While there, the Jumpers worked with children to show them how jumping rope is not just a past time but a sport! Videography by Samantha Ortiz.

On Saturday, August 15, 2015, the Barrow Whalers hosted the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears in the 2015 high school football season opener. The Whalers led 8-0 after a hardfought first half, but things didn't really get wild until late when the hosts blew a 20-12 lead in the final three minutes of the game. Ultimately, Juneau-Douglas was able to score a couple of late touchdowns and escape the blue turf of Barrow's Cathy Parker Field with a 26-20 victory.

Inmates study literature and philosophy in a prison in Juneau, Alaska. This documentary offers a rare look at the classes inside the prison and the impact on students who participate in the program, which is called "the Flying University". The program traces its roots to underground philosophy courses in the Soviet Union – the original “Flying University.” This short film takes viewers inside classes at Juneau’s Lemon Creek Correctional Center led by Sol Neely, a professor at the University of Alaska Southeast. Theatre alumna Jessica Jacob (MFA 2006) returned to UHM to fill the position of Theatre Manager/Public Information for the UHM Department of Theatre + Dance in 2015. Prior to that, she was the Executive and Artistic Director for Alaska Theatre of Youth (ATY), where she produced approximately 60 fully staged shows, 15 camps, and more than 48 multi-day workshops for youth actors in a little over 5 years. Concurrently, she freelanced as an adjunct professor of acting, stage combat and aerial arts at University of Alaska Anchorage and as a stage combat choreographer (and aerialist) state-wide. University of Alaska President Jim Johnsen says the university system should have one school of education with its dean in Fairbanks, closing separate education administrations in Anchorage and Juneau.
Johnsen announced the proposal Friday as part of the continuation of his Strategic Pathways, meant to eliminate duplication and focus on the strengths of each of the university's three main campuses while trimming the budget and increasing the number of graduates. The process has led to the proposed elimination of skiing and indoor track teams as well as the proposed elimination of the school of management at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau. Business classes would still be offered at UAS in Juneau, just as faculty would still offer education programs and classes at the University of Alaska Anchorage and at the Southeast campus, according to the proposals.
However, UAF would become the only administrative home of the single college of education, with just one dean there to oversee programs at Anchorage and Juneau as well as Fairbanks. UAA and UAS education faculty would all become UAF faculty under the plan.
It remains unclear just what the plan means for administrative staff in Anchorage and Juneau and how many positions would be eliminated — if any. Robbie Graham, UA spokeswoman, said those details would be worked out by a planning team, appointed by Johnsen and led by Dan White, UA vice president for academic affairs and research.
According to the prepared statement on Friday, the Board of Regents still must approve Johnsen's proposal, as does the the Northwest Commission on College and Universities, which accredits UAA, UAS and UAF.

Photographer Will Mader and I spent a morning at a bilingual preschool, another such effort to keep the language alive, where children enthusiastically sing and speak Inupiaq every day.
Featured guests: Evon Peter and Lance Twitchell, two longtime leaders in the indigenous education movement. Peter is vice chancellor for rural community and Native education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Twitchell is a Native language professor at the University of Alaska’s Southeast campus in Juneau. Both led the charge at this year’s Alaska Federation of Natives convention to “indigenize” education in Rural Alaska.
It’s exciting to bring you distinctly Alaska conversations and get to the heart of who we are.
We face challenges unique to our history, geography and diverse cultures — our state’s modern frontier, especially when it comes to helping our children navigate and succeed in unchartered territory.

An active participant in theatrical combat since 1995, she promotes actor conditioning for the stage and has been a fitness and dance/movement instructor. Prior to her return to the island, she provided fight choreography and direction for Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska, Fairbanks Shakespeare, Anchorage Opera, University of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Theatre of Youth and more. As a performer, Jessica has appeared on stage in Alaska, Hawaii, Vermont, Japan, Taiwan, Belgium, the Netherlands. An advocate of “higher” education, she was the faculty point-person for UAA Theatre’s Fallen in spring of 2009, a full-length show integrating theatre and aerial acrobatics, and was able to study aerial acrobatics in residency with the Aerial Angels of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
