Isuzu has updated its D-Max ute range with new styling on the outside and a new, torquier 3.0-litre diesel heart beating under the bonnet.

Both 4x2 and 4x4 models feature the new engine, which was uniquely developed for Australia and is backed by a new six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Coming from a need to meet tougher Euro 5 emissions compliance, the new engine was developed based on feedback from existing D-Max owners that didn't want to move to a smaller 2.5-litre twin turbo engine as offered in Europe.

That lead to a development program for the 3.0-litre engine that saw new pistons, fuel injectors, EGR bypass valve, ceramic glow plugs, a larger EGR cooler and a variable geometry turbocharger as well as a diesel particulate filter (Isuzu call it a diesel particulate diffuser) added to the design to bring it up to date.

The new engine produces the same 130kW as before at 3600rpm, but torque has been bumped up to 430Nm between 2000- 22000rpm, with at least 380Nm (the maximum of the previous engine) on offer between 1700-3500rpm.

A new Isuzu-developed six-speed manual with triple cone synchronisers has been introduced, along with a six-speed Aisin automatic that features adaptive learning and sequential manual shifting, in place of the previous five-speed auto.

Fuel consumption is rated between 7.2L and 7.7L/100km for 4x2 models and 7.7L to 8.1L/100km for 4x4 models depending on transmission and specifications.

The D-Max range stays as before with work-ready SX and EX trims and more upmarket LS-M, LS-U and LS-T variants available across 4x2 (SX and LS-U only) and 4x4 models in single cab, extra cab, and dual cab body styles.

On the safety front, all LS models now come standard with a reversing camera, while SX and DX variants can be fitted with an accessory camera. That's on top of six airbags, ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic stability and traction control, front seatbelt pretensioners, hill start assist and hill descent control (including 4x2) standard across the range.

Interior changes include a 7.0-inch touchscreen for SX and LS-M variants, with an 8.0-inch system including satellite navigation on LS-U and LS-T. All LS-grade variants now also come with three USB charge points with two in the front and one in the back.

Outside, the new D-Max can be identified by a new grille, bumper, bonnet and headlights including LED daytime running lights on LS models. New 18-inch alloy wheels also come standard on the LS-T.

Isuzu is also introducing a limited edition D-Max X-Runner to celebrate the company's centenary, available as a six-speed automatic only in either Cosmic Black or Pearlescent White (an X-Runner exclusive) the special edition features gunmetal grey for the sports bar, grille, alloy wheels, and sidesteps, red badging, and a tub liner.

Inside, the X-Runner picks up dark grey trim with piano black highlights, two-tone red and black seats, climate control and a reversing camera with reverse park assist.
