Bonisile John Kani (born 30 August 1943 in New Brighton, Eastern Cape, South Africa) is a South African actor, director and playwright.
Kani joined the Serpent Players (a group of actors whose first performance was in the former snake pit of the zoo, hence the name) in Port Elizabeth in 1965 and helped to create many plays that went unpublished but were performed to a resounding reception.
These were followed by the more famous Sizwe Banzi is Dead and The Island, co-written with Athol Fugard and Winston Ntshona, in the early 1970s. He also received an Olivier Award nomination for his role in My Children! My Africa!
Kani's work has been widely performed around the world, including New York, where he and Winston Ntshona won a Tony Award in 1975 for Sizwe Banzi Is Dead and The Island. These two plays were presented in repertory at the Edison Theatre for a total of 52 performances.
In 1987 Kani played Othello in a performance of Shakespeare's play in South Africa which was still under apartheid. "At least I'll be able to kiss Desdemona without leaving a smudge." he said then.

John is a common English name and surname:
John may also refer to:
Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack (born November 21, 1940), better known by the stage name Dr. John (also Dr. John Creaux, or Dr. John the Night Tripper), is an American singer, songwriter, pianist and guitarist, whose music combines blues, pop, jazz as well as zydeco, boogie woogie and rock and roll.
Active as a session musician since the late 1950s, he gained a cult following in the late 1960s following the release of his album Gris-Gris and his appearance at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music. He performed a wildly theatrical stage show inspired by medicine shows, Mardi Gras costumes and voodoo ceremonies. Rebennack has recorded over 20 albums and in 1973 scored a top-20 hit with the jaunty funk-flavored "Right Place Wrong Time", still his best-known song.
The winner of six Grammy Awards, Rebennack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by singer John Legend on March 14, 2011. In May 2013, Rebennack was the recipient of an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Tulane University. He was jokingly referred to by Tulane's president, Scott Cowen, as "Dr. Dr. John".

Excerpt from the film VOICES FROM THE NEW SOUTH AFRICA. From the new South Africa comes this documentary focusing on the struggle of exiled Black Africans to find their place in their country after apartheid. Nothing But the Truth (John Kani, 2008, 78 mins.), which is based on the award-winning, long-running play by director and actor John Kani, explores the complex dynamic between those who risked their lives to remain in South Africa to end apartheid and those who lived in exile to bring attention to the cause. In New Brighton, librarian Sipho Makhaya prepares for the return of his brother's ashes. His brother had gained a reputation as a hero of the anti-apartheid movement while Sipho spent most of his life on the front lines. Homecoming (Norman Maake, 2005, 90 mins.), a film version o...

The Island is a play written Athol Fugard, John Kani, and Winston Ntshona. The performance is a collaboration between KININSO KONCEPTS AND AROJAH THEATRE. The apartheid-era drama, inspired by a true story, is set in an unnamed prison clearly based on South Africa's notorious Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was held for twenty-seven years. It focuses on two cellmates, one whose successful appeal means that his release draws near and one who must remain in prison for many years to come. They spend their days performing futile physical labor and nights rehearsing in their cell for a performance of Sophocles' Antigone in front of the other prisoners. One takes the part of Antigone, who defies the laws of the state to bury her brother, and the other takes the part of her uncle Creon, who s...
John Kani has led a distinguished career as an activist, theatre practitioner and award winning actor on stage and screen, and was an early supporter of the Robben Island Shakespeare as a verbatim theatre piece. He appears here with his son and fellow actor, Atandwa Kani (centre), and their castmate Omphile Molusi (right). The three appeared together in the Baxter Theatre/Royal Shakespeare Company touring co-production of The Tempest in 2009, and kindly gave of their time and talents during the run of that show at the Richmond Theatre in Greater London, to perform a rehearsed reading of an early draft of the Robben Island Bible playscript, which was followed by a question and answer session with the invited audience. Playwright and director Matthew Hahn appears from on and off-screen at...

Famed designer Karl Kani spoke to VladTV about his come up in fashion, which started after he had a custom made piece done by his dad's tailor that turned heads in his Brooklyn neighborhood. From there, Karl started getting pieces custom made for the local drug dealers, and after he felt like the next step needed to be made, he moved to L.A. to be closer to the factories that made clothes for brands he was trying to associate with. His first move was to set up shop in Crenshaw, which didn't end well, seeing as how the shop was robbed of everything from the sewing machines to the actual clothing goods. Karl bounced back by selling his clothes mail order, and he later partnered with Cross Colours founder Carl Jones in a 50/50 partnership. Check out more of what Karl had to say about his c...

Turn my music high, high, high, high-er
"you don't know... what you're doing, doing, doing, doing..."
Sure I do...
I'm from the streets where the
Hood could swallow a man, bullets'll follow a man
There's so much coke that you could run the slalom
And cops comb the shit top to bottom
They say that we are prone to violence, but it's home sweet home
Where personalities crash and chrome meets chrome
The coke prices up and down like it's wall street homes
But this is worse than the dow jones your brains are now blown
All over that brown brougham, one slip you are now gone
Welcome to hell where you are welcome to sell
But when them shells come you better return 'em
All scars we earn 'em, all cars we learn 'em like the back of our hand
We watch for cops hoppin out the back of van
Wear a g on my chest, I don't need that for damn
This ain't a sewn outfit homes, homes is about it
Was clappin them flamers before I became famous
For playin me y'all shall forever remain nameless
I am hov'
Sure I do, I tell you the difference between me and them
They tryin to get they ones, I'm tryin to get them m's
One million, two million, three million, four
In just five years, forty million more
You are now lookin at the forty million boy
I'm rapin def jam 'til I'm the hundred million man
R., o., c.
"you don't know... what you're doing, doing, doing, doing..."
That's where you're wrong
I came into this motherfucker a hundred grand strong
Nine to be exact, from grindin g-packs
Put this shit in motion ain't no rewindin me back
Could make 40 off a brick but one rhyme could beat that
And if somebody woulda told 'em that hov' would sell clothin
Heh, not in this lifetime, wasn't in my right mind
That's another difference that's between me and them
Heh, I'm smarten up, open the market up
One million, two million, three million, four
In eighteen months, eighty million more
Now add that number up with the one I said before
You are now lookin at one smart black boy
Momma ain't raised no fool
Put me anywhere on god's green earth, I'll triple my worth
Motherfucker - I, will, not, lose
"you don't know... what you're doing, doing, doing, doing..."
Put somethin on it
I sell ice in the winter, I sell fire in hell
I am a hustler baby, I'll sell water to a well
I was born to get cake, move on and switch states
Cop the coupe with the roof gone and switch plates
Was born to dictate, never follow orders
Dickface, get your shit straight, fucka this is big jay
I... hahahaha...
"you don't know... what you're doing, doing, doing, doing..."
