According to NDTV, the child was executed for swearing during a soccer game. A source said the child was heard "cursing divinity," which was "considered an insult to caliphate, regardless of the age of the boy."

According to eyewitnesses, an ISIS militant read a statement explaining the reasons for the execution before he was shot in the square. After Muaz was dead, his parents reportedly collapsed in front of the crowd of several hundred.
