Canada prison break: Manhunt launched after prisoners use helicopter to escape
Three men have escaped in a helicopter from a Canadian prison, prompting a manhunt involving the country's military. The men escaped on Saturday evening from the Orsainville Detention Centre, in the suburbs of Quebec City, after a helicopter briefly landed at the prison to pick them up. At least two of the men were arrested as part of a 2010 drug bust, for which they were waiting to stand trial. The men are thought to have ties to the Hells Angels, according to local reports. Authorities believe that one pilot was in the helicopter when it arrived at the prison, though the exact details of the escape are still being investigated, police said. The three prisoners (left to right) Denis Lefebvre, Yves Denis and Serge Pomerleau fled in the remarkable breakout The three prisoners (left to right) Denis Lefebvre, Yves Denis and Serge Pomerleau fled in the remarkable breakout "Priority number one is to locate the helicopter and the three escapees that are inside that helicopter," police spokesperson Ann Mathieu told a local news channel. "We are really working closely with the detention centre for all the information that we can possess on those individuals." The escapees have been identified as Yves Denis, 35, Denis Lefebvre, 53 and Serge Pomerleau, 49. Police have released pictures of the three on Twitter, and warned the public not to approach the inmates. They headed west in the helicopter, perhaps towards Montreal, said local reports. It is the second dramatic prison escape in Quebec in nearly a year. Prisoners escaped from a different Quebec prison in March 2013 after being hoisted away in a helicopter, which officials said was a first in the region. The two escapees were found within hours, along with two people suspected of arranging the escape. - - Three men escape from Canadian jail using helicopter Three men escape from Canadian jail using helicopter Three men escape from Canadian jail using helicopter Three men escape from Canadian jail using helicopter- published: 08 Jun 2014

New Brunswick, Canada Shooting Leads To Manhunt In Moncton
MONCTON, New Brunswick (AP) — Three police officers were shot dead and two others injured in a rare case of gun violence in the east coast Canadian province of New Brunswick, officials said. Authorities were searching for a suspect. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Constable Damien Theriault said police responded to a call Wednesday about an armed man in the north end of the city of Moncton at 7:30 p.m. Three of the officers were killed and two sustained non-life threatening injuries and were in stable condition. "We are still actively looking for the shooter," Theriault said. "He is believed to still be in the Pinehurst subdivision area of Moncton. We are urging people in that area to stay inside and lock their doors and for people to say away from that area." Asked how he was dealing with his grief, Theriault said he personally knew the officers before breaking down and excusing himself because he couldn't complete his sentence. Police said they were looking for 24-year-old Justin Bourque of Moncton — a city of about 69,000 people about 95 miles (150 kilometers) northeast of the capital of St. John, New Brunswick. The police force tweeted an image of a suspect wearing military camouflage and wielding two guns. Danny Leblanc, 42, said he saw the shooter in the distance Wednesday evening, wearing a camouflage outfit and standing in the middle of the street with his gun pointed at police cars. The construction worker said he believed it was an RCMP officer he was looking at until he heard a burst of automatic gunfire coming from the man's gun. He said he quickly retreated into his home and remained there with his family. At one point a neighbor posted on social media that their kitchen window was shattered by gunfire.- published: 05 Jun 2014

Canadian Manhunt: THREE Police Officers Shot Dead Canadian Manhunt: THREE Police Officers Shot Dead Canadian Manhunt: THREE Police Officers Shot Dead The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in New Brunswick, Canada, tweeted an image of suspected cop killer Justin Bourque, 24, wearing military camouflage and wielding two guns. Desperate hunt for man, 24, dressed like Rambo and wielding two guns after he shot and killed THREE police officers in Canada Police in Canada are hunting a heavily armed and dangerous man dressed like Rambo who they say shot dead three police officers and injured two others. A fierce gunfight erupted on Wednesday evening after police received a call at 7.30pm about an armed man in the north end of the city of Moncton, in the east coast province of New Brunswick. Three of the responding officers were killed and two sustained non-life threatening injuries and were in stable condition. One shocked local family caught the gunfight on camera and uploaded the footage to Facebook. The suspect, 24-year-old Justin Bourque, of Moncton, was said to be armed with two assault rifles with high capacity magazines, a crossbow and a knife. The police tweeted an image of the suspect wearing military camouflage and wielding two guns. He is still at large in the Pinehurst area of the city and police are urging residents to stay indoors. A tweet from the New Brunswick Royal Canadian Mounted Police this morning said: 'Still actively looking for shooter near Pinehurst SubDiv. in Moncton. Stay in. Lock doors. Avoid this area. Stay Safe! RCMP officer Damien Theriault and Mayor George LeBlanc made an emotional address to the media during a late-night news conference at City Hall in Moncton after the deaths. Theriault said he personally knew the officers killed, before breaking down and excusing himself because he couldn't complete his sentence. Witness Danny Leblanc, 42, said he saw the shooter in the distance Wednesday evening, wearing a camouflage outfit and standing in the middle of the street with his gun pointed at police cars. The construction worker said he believed it was an RCMP officer he was looking at until he heard a burst of automatic gunfire coming from the man's gun. He said he quickly retreated into his home and remained there with his family. At one point a neighbor posted on social media that their kitchen window was shattered by gunfire. Leblanc said few people on his normally quiet street were sleeping as they awaited word at midnight on whether arrests had been made. Word that police had been killed shocked the city, Leblanc said. 'It's devastating. I don't know if he was on a hunt for them, or what,' he said. Police say Bourque is carrying two military-style assault rifles with high capacity magazines, a bow and a knife. A Facebook page attributed to the suspect is filled with posts about weaponry, hunting and police officers. His last status update posted hours before the deadly shootout included lyrics from Megadeth's song Hook in Mouth. 'Don't try to fool us, we know the worst is yet to come./ I believe my kingdom will come,' the Facebook user wrote. Police said Wednesday night they believed the suspect was at large in a Moncton subdivision. Police had a number of roads in the city blocked and traffic was backed up on major arteries across the city. Drivers were also asked to stay out of the area. Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc urged all residents to pay strict attention to the RCMP warnings. 'The police and other emergency personnel are working under extremely difficult conditions and need our complete cooperation. Stay home, stay safe. If you cannot get home, seek out a friend or family and remain there until you are advised otherwise,' LeBlanc said in a statement. Police first received a call at around 7.20pm about an armed man roaming the streets dressed in camouflage. Joan MacAlpine-Stiles told CBC.ca she spotted the alleged shooter when she went to open a window. 'I said, "Oh my God, there he is with camouflage and the headband and a gun, and it looked like a bow he had with him, and I mean he was just through our backyard."' Will Njoku told the news outlet he was putting his children to bed just before 8pm when he heard popping sounds, followed by sirens. When he learned there is a gunman at large, Njoku went outside to warn his neighbors. Resident Heidi James told CTV News she heard four or five shots, prompting her to move her children away from the windows. When her husband peered outside, he saw a body lying on the ground covered with a blanket next to a shot-up vehicle. Twitter user Matt Arsenault shared photos from the crime scene depicting a dark-colored sedan with all its windows shattered surrounded by a pool of blood.- published: 05 Jun 2014

Police Manhunt For 'Black Widow' Terrorist Around the Sochi Winter Olympics
Police Manhunt For 'Black Widow' Terrorist Around the Sochi Winter Olympics
New details fueled debate Monday over security at the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi: Wanted posters of a terrorism suspect on the loose, warships at the ready and a video threat from beyond the grave. Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that his country has stepped up security and is prepared to handle any threats. But some U.S. lawmakers -- and at least one Olympic athlete -- have said they're worried about the situation. Hotels warned about terror suspect Police in Sochi have handed out fliers at area hotels warning of a woman they believe could be a terrorist and who may currently be in the city. One flier, obtained by CNN, asks workers to be on the lookout for Ruzanna "Salima" Ibragimova, described as the widow of a member of a militant group from the Caucasus region. The woman, according to the flier, may be involved in organizing "a terrorist act within the 2014 Olympic region." CNN obtained a copy of the flier, which is dated January 15, from security staff at a hotel in Sochi. The flier claims authorities have received information about Ibragimova's possible arrival in the region last week. Photos of Ibragimova have flooded television and social media reports from Sochi. Some describe her as a "black widow" -- a notorious type of terrorist that's emerged in Russia's clashes with Chechen separatists. Many of them are wives of insurgents killed by government forces, and they've been blamed for high-profile suicide bombings. Security experts stressed Monday that the woman is likely one of many suspects authorities are trying to find. "I guarantee they're talking about this one black widow," former CIA officer Mike Baker said, "but there are others that they're also worried about." Official: U.S. military at the ready as contingency plan The U.S. military will have up to two warships and several transport aircraft on standby under a contingency plan to help evacuate American officials and athletes from the Winter Olympics, if ordered, a U.S. official said Monday. The State Department would take the lead in organizing and evacuating Americans, if necessary, the official with direct knowledge of the plan told CNN. Moscow would have to ask for such assistance before the United States would act, the official said. But planes and ships are clearly there "if something happens like a major terrorist attack and we need to get Americans out," the official said. U.S. contingency planning calls for warships to launch helicopters to Sochi from the Black Sea. C-17 transport aircraft would be on standby in Germany and could be on the scene in about two hours. Other aircraft contracted to the State Department would also play a role in any emergency. A video threat from beyond the grave In a video that surfaced Sunday, two young men believed to have been suicide bombers in last month's back-to-back bombings in the Russian city of Volgograd made an ominous promise. "We've prepared a present for you and all tourists who'll come over," the video says. "If you will hold the Olympics, you'll get a present from us for the Muslim blood that's been spilled." The video was posted on a well-known jihadi forum website Sunday and apparently was recorded before the Volgograd attacks, which targeted a train station and a trolley bus and claimed the lives of more than 30 people. Putin pledges stepped up security Putin has pledged that visitors to Sochi for the Winter Olympics will be kept safe. Russia has plenty of experience in keeping international events secure, Putin said, pointing to the G8 and G20 summits as examples. Access to Sochi is under heavy restriction ahead of the games, and Putin said Sunday in an interview with half a dozen Russian and international broadcasters that about 40,000 members of Russia's police and security forces would be guarding events. Security analysts have warned that terrorists targeting the Games may try to strike elsewhere in Russia during the Olympics. U.S. lawmakers: Games won't be safe U.S. Sen. Angus King, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he wouldn't go to the Games himself, "and I don't think I would send my family." Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, also called on the Russian government to be more cooperative with the United States on intelligence sharing ahead of the Games. "Their level of concern is great, but we don't seem to be getting all of the information we need to protect our athletes in the Games. I think this needs to change, and it should change soon," Rogers said. In recent weeks, U.S. law enforcement agents have been conducting interviews with people in the United States with ties in the Caucasus region, CNN has learned. The region, which includes Dagestan and Chechnya, has been the scene of unrest and is in southern Russia, hundreds of miles from the venue of the Games.- published: 21 Jan 2014
