A gunman allegedly climbed onto his roof with a rifle and shot at police during a Thursday afternoon stand-off.

It is alleged the gunman also shot at a 50-year-old man, who was known to him, at a Cambridge Street residence in Charters Towers about 1pm.

Police said the man was tracked to a nearby rural property in Breddan where he climbed onto the roof and fired several shots at officers.

Responding officers didn't return fire and called in negotiators, leading to the man being taken into custody just before 9pm. No one was injured during either incident.

A 21-year-old Breddan man has been charged with eight offences including carrying and discharging a weapon in a public place, intending to cause grievous bodily harm and driving unlicensed, uninsured and unregistered.

He is due to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Friday.
