Opening of the Judicial Year 2017

The official opening of the Court’s Judicial Year took place on 27 January 2017. Some 300 senior judicial figures from European States took part in a seminar on the theme: Non-refoulement as a principle of international law and the role of the judiciary in its implementation. Following the seminar, President Guido Raimondi and Silvia Alejandra Fernández de Gurmendi, President of the International Criminal Court, addressed an audience of about 350 at the solemn hearing.

  • Judgment concerning the Russian Federation

    In the case of Navalnyy v. Russia, the Court held that there had been several violations of the Convention.

    The applicant is a political activist, opposition leader, anti-corruption campaigner and popular blogger. The case concerned this arrest on 7 occasions at different public gatherings, and his subsequent prosecution for administrative offences.

  • Judgment concerning Belgium

    In the case of Kalnėnienė v. Belgium, the Court found a violation of the right to respect for private life on account of a house search which was conducted in the applicant’s home without a search warrant.

  • Visit by a delegation from the French Conseil d’État

    Visit by a delegation from the French Conseil d’État

    On 3 February 2017 Jean-Marc Sauvé, Vice-President of the French Conseil d’État, accompanied by a delegation made up of Bernard Stirn, President of the Administrative Disputes Section, Maryvonne de Saint-Pulgent, President of the Reports and Studies Section, Fabien Raynaud, member of the Conseil d’État and President of the 6th Division, Yves Gounin, member of the Conseil d’État with responsibility for international relations, Mattias Guyomar, member of the Conseil d’État and President of the 10th Division, Béatrice Bourgeois-Machureau, member of the Conseil d’État and Public Rapporteur with the 2nd Division, and Guillaume Odinet, legal adviser with the Conseil d’État, visited the Court and were received by President Guido Raimondi. During the visit the delegation took part in a Round Table composed of Juges Angelika Nußberger, Vice-President of the Court and judge elected in respect of Germany, Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, Section President and judge elected in respect of Greece, André Potocki, judge elected in respect of France, and Síofra O’Leary, judge elected in respect of Ireland.

Hearings

  • Hearing in February

    In February 2017 the Court will be holding a hearing in the case of Correia de Matos v. Portugal.

    The case concerns the criminal proceedings brought against the applicant, a lawyer, for insulting a judge, and the fact that he was not permitted to conduct his own defence in those proceedings because the domestic courts required him to be represented by a lawyer.
