  • The tot admitted he was sad when the pair became 'boyfriend and girlfriend'

Two's company but three's a crowd - as two friends learned the hard way on The Secret Life Of 5 Year Olds tonight.

An unlikely love triangle emerged between schoolboys Oscar and Oliver as Channel 4’s hit fly-on-the-wall documentary returned for its series finale on Thursday.

The two 'best friends' bonded over building and ball games, but when girls were introduced to the group the following week, newcomer Naomi took an instant shine to Oliver.

'I wanted to tell you something,' Naomi whispered in his ear. 'I was wondering if you could be a boyfriend with me?'

Despite his initial reservations, he eventually agreed - much to Oscar's obvious dismay.

'That's not good,' the youngster muttered, looking forlorn, as his friend grew closer to his new 'girlfriend'.

He admitted to cameras that their partnership had made him feel 'sad'.

And when his best friend shooed him away while speaking to Naomi, Oscar was seen slapping him in the face. 'That's what you get because you're not my friend anymore,' he said.

As the drama unfolded on Thursday night, fans took to Twitter to bemoan the demise of the bromance, with Dave writing: 'Oscar & Oliver are going to let girls in between their friendship'

Following on from last week’s gender theme, tonight’s episode again focused on the differences between girls and boys.

Five girls and five boys returned to discover they had to share the play centre with members of the opposite sex - and cameras followed their reactions.

Their experiment set out to test research suggesting that at five-year-old girls and boys often positively benefit from mixed gender groups.

'That's not good,' Oscar muttered, as his friend grew closer to his new 'girlfriend'. He admitted to cameras that their partnership had made him feel 'sad'

Last week Jude, Oscar and the boys displayed some pretty well formed gender stereotypes.

Tonight, they were horrified to learn there was a cross-dressing task where they were forced dress up as girls. Psychologists noted that the girls didn't share their horror.

They also discovered that girls show signs of empathy from as young as three to four months and have better language and communication skills at five years old than boys.

But boys were found to be generally less risk-averse and out-perform girls at spatial awareness tasks.

Boys and girls were also encouraged to learn from each other's skills to solve a Magic Carpet Puzzle, and to cooperate in the kitchen long enough to make a smoothie.
