Flash-flooding, earthquakes, snow: what's happening around Australia?

  • Hannah Barry

Melting playgrounds, power blackouts and underwater parks, there's something weird happening around Australia.

As Perth soaks through its second-ever wettest day, it seems to be another story on the other side of the country.

Record-breaking temperatures have brought New South Wales and the ACT to their knees, with the heatwave expected to continue over the next week.

Sydney has recorded its hottest summer in 158 years and some inner parts of the state areas are looking to reach a top of 47 degrees.

South Australia, Queensland and parts of Victoria have now all braced for their own heatwave, with experts and government officials pleading with residents to take care in the extreme conditions.

Meanwhile, however, half of Perth appears to be underwater.

Main Roads WA has been kept busy with road closures all over the state, and the South West looks set to experience their own soaking over the weekend.

Events across the city have been cancelled as the stormy weather continues and some 700 homes in the state are still without power.

Not to mention it's expected to snow in Tasmania, and Adelaide was just shaken by a magnitude 2.7 earthquake.

While much of WA has come to a standstill while emergency authorities navigate the conditions, it seems the Busselton Jetty Swim will at least go ahead- whether the race starts on the beachfront or Vasse Highway is another question.
