5 STRANGEST Things Caught On Google Earth/Maps! Description: When people use Google Maps they can feel like they’re in a spy movie. The accessibility of satellite technology has made it possible for people to explore the world without leaving their own home, and features like street view allow people to see these different locations in amazing, vivid detail. People have been able to make some pretty amazing but strange discoveries using Google Maps. These are five of those discoveries. Let’s begin! 5. Strange Lines in the Gobi Desert Formations like these immediately stand out. What could they be doing in an unforgiving desert, who created them, and why? These are the questions people asked when they discovered these strange formations in the Gobi Desert in China One possible answer is that these lines are products of Chinese military. When zoomed in, military vehicles and jet planes are visible, indicating a plausible military connection. The theories around the Chinese military include the possibility that these lines are used to calibrate Chinese spy satellites. Other theories suggest that these are roads and infrastructure that connect different radio towers, networks, and stations. One possible, yet more sinister, theory is that these sites are used to calibrate missile systems. 4. Airplane Graveyard When planes are decommissioned by the U.S. military, they’re sent to the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, or “the Boneyard,” at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. The Boneyard is the largest airplane graveyard in the world, and home to 4,400 retired US military aircrafts. The barren desert provides the optimal atmosphere for the storage of aircrafts because the low humidity and moisture is security against corrosion. While the Boneyard is not open to the public, you can see it in movies like Transformers and Baraka, or television show The Great Escape. 3.Phantom Island near Australia Sandy Island, Australia, has been recorded on physical maps since the 19th century and was visible on Googe Maps until 2012. Sandy Island was discovered by James Cook in 1774 and found again by a German whaling ship called the Velocity. Though its existence was considered doubtful, it continued to appear on maps of islands and coastlines due to maritime standards of charting any possible hazard that may be encountered. It even appeared on Google Maps. In 2012 Australian scientists “undiscovered” the island, and it was removed from Google Maps in November of that year. Possible explanations include that the island was actually a pumice raft, or that it was a corel reef. 2.Massive Unknown Creature near Antarctica Youtuber wowforreeel found this formation on Google Earth near Deception Island, an island off the coast of Antarctica, because of what the YouTube user described as “one massive disturbance.”. While wowforreeel suggests that it looks like a plesiosaur fin, it has a striking resemblance to the head of a squid.Cut to public domain picture of squid showing the similarities.Wowforreeel measured the irregularity to be 25 yards, or 22 meters, using Google earth’s measurement function, which would mean the total size of this squid would be much, much larger. Skeptics have said that it’s a large rock jutting out of the water. 1. Canadian Boy Discovers Lost Mayan City Using Google Maps William Gadoury of Quebec, Canada, may have discovered a lost Mayan city by correlating sites of ancient Mayan cities with star charts charts and constellations using Google Maps. He found that in a three-star constellation, a city was missing, so he looked for it and found a large, rectangular feature in the Central American jungle. Scientists and skeptics were what Gadoury would later call “jealous,” and sought to debunk or disprove his theory and discovery, calling it “junk science.” Some claim that they’ve been to the location, and that it’s a field, that it’s a dried up swamp, or that it’s only near an already discovered location. In an interview with National Geographic, Gadoury says that he plans on studying archaeology or astronomy and claimed that he would continue his research by visiting the location himself.
