'He's eating like a little pig': Father of nine Mel Gibson, 61, says newborn son Lars is 'doing great'

He's been nominated for an Oscar for the first time in 20 years.

But Mel Gibson, 61, focused much of his attention on his two-week-old son Lars in an interview with Extra's Mario Lopez at the Oscar nominees luncheon in Beverly Hills on Monday.

The Braveheart star sat down with the host to talk about his new film Hacksaw Ridge, but couldn't help gushing over his new baby boy.

When Mario asked about the latest addition to his family - his ninth child - the director gushed:  'He great, he's growing, he's eating like a little pig and is doing just great.'

He continued: 'He even smiles. Two weeks old, he has a grin going, so something's funny — I don't know what.'

He also touched on his nomination for directing the film Hacksaw Ridge and what it's like to be back on the awards circuit.

'Twenty years ago is the last time I did one of the lunches,' he recalled.

Mel won an Oscar for directing Braveheart in 1996 and he says he's happy to attend the luncheon 20 years later and see old friends.

'I bumped into Denzel [Washington],' he shared. 'He was brutally honest and told me I need to go to the gym.'

The 61-year-old told Mario his 26-year-old girlfriend and the mother of his ninth child, Rosalind Ross, will be joining him at the Oscars, saying she's excited to be there and already 'looks like a million bucks,' just two weeks after giving birth.

The actor and the former equestrian vaulter, Rosalind Ross, welcomed a child together in January

The actor and former equestrian vaulter are going strong despite much criticism about their age gap.

The Lethal Weapon star told The Mirror back in November: 'Regarding age and relationships, it's just a number. We dig each other.'

Speaking about Rosalind, who he has been dating for two years, he added: 'She is an adult and we dig each other.

'It might cause a problem and one has a trepidation about these things, but it's working out great. She is a really special person.'

The former vaulting champ was first spotted with Gibson, in July and has since become a regular fixture at his side.

Hacksaw Ridge has placed the actor and director back in Tinseltown's good books after he was the focus of multiple high profile scandals.

In 2006 the Oscar winner was arrested on a DUI charge on a Californian highway and his hate-filled rant at his arresting officer caused public shock and outrage.

'The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,' he was recorded saying.

But the American born, Aussie-raised star has been redeemed with Hacksaw Ridge, starring Andrew Garfield.

The war drama has been nominated for a slew of awards, including multiple Golden Globes, BAFTAs and a whopping six Oscars.

The most satisfying of which for Mel must be his Best Achievement in Directing nomination, as well as the film's nod as Best Motion Picture of the Year.
