Tom Brady's father says their family is 'back to reality' after the Super Bowl high as the MVP's mother continues her battle with cancer.

Galynn Brady returned to California following the game on Sunday where she is scheduled to undergo radiation treatment in her 18-month struggle with the disease.

Her husband Tom Brady Sr. told the Boston Herald that watching their son claim Super Bowl victory was uplifting but their fight would now continue.

'The Super Bowl was an unbelievable deal. It was so exhilarating, but we're back to reality. We're back to where we were a week ago trying to deal with this stuff,' he said.

'Look, by no means is Galynn's condition damper on anything, it just is what it is. We're keeping the faith. We're going to beat this thing.'

The New England Patriots' star quarterback feared his mother wouldn't be able to make the trip to the Super Bowl given she had just finished months of chemotherapy. She only got clearance from the doctors to fly to Houston on the Wednesday before the game.

'It was great, it was one of the happiest moments that we've had in a couple of years, and we wouldn't trade it for anything,' Tom Sr. said of the Patriots' 34-28 overtime win against the Falcons.

Tom Sr. said he was proud to see his son claim victory and rise above the negativity that followed Deflategate and commissioner Roger Goodell's four-game suspension for Brady.

'I absolutely felt vindication. And I think Goodell realizes how big a meathead he is,' Tom Sr. said.

Brady's father had accused Goodell of a 'witchhunt' against his son following the suspension.

Brady was presented the MVP trophy in an awkward exchange with Goodell on Monday. Neither offered to shake hands although they stood and posed for pictures together.

His dad said despite the negativity towards his son following the suspension, people outside New England were able to see his true side at the Super Bowl.

'People this week got a much bigger window into Tommy Brady's soul than they ever had before,' Tom Sr. said.

'The fact of how much, how sensitive and kind and emotional and responsive he is to his parents... when he talks about his family, what kind of dad he is, he is absolutely the best.'

It comes after Tom Brady paid tribute to his cancer sufferer mother as he was named MVP for a fourth time.

'She's been through a lot,' Brady said at the Monday press conference. 'Way harder than what I went through last night, what the team went through.

'All families go through challenging times personally. But she has a lot of support and a lot of love. I'm just happy last night to be able to celebrate with her.'

He added that his father, Tom Brady Sr., was an inspiration for him and had been there for his mom 'every step of the way.'

'They set such a great example to me,' he said.

Before kickoff, Brady told Westwood One's Jim Gray, 'She's the one I want to win it for.'

Brady made history by winning the Super Bowl MVP honor for the fourth time - the most ever won by a player.

And he did it all in front of his mother Galynn who wore a bandanna over her head as she greeted her son after his victory.

In an interview with CBS Boston after the game Galynn said she was overwhelmed after watching her son play. She also said that she spent the game praying for a Patriots win.

'It's the best ever. It's the best ever. And he's ... I'm speechless. I'm speechless,' said Tom Sr. in the same interview. 'It was so spectacular and so fun and so nerve-racking and so awesome.'

When asked how his son maintains his composure Tom Sr. said he must have got it from his mother.

Earlier in the week, Brady teared up during Media Day when he was asked to name his hero, saying it was his father.

He's also posted a heartfelt photo to social media on Friday announcing that his family has arrived in Houston for his sixth Super Bowl appearance.

Brady admitted through tears that she hadn't been present at a single game this season, and his father only made it to one, which was 'atypical'.

The quarterback posted the touching photo with the caption 'Sandwich kiss for mom at picture day!!! Go Pats!!!!'
