The East Hampton residence was the subject of a documentary, HBO movie and Broadway musical - all of which are called Grey Gardens.

The former First Lady's sister, Lee Radizwill, had invited the filmmakers to make a film regarding Radziwill and the Bouvier clan, according to ABC

The directors found 'Big Edie' and 'Little Edie' through research, and the women resided with 58 cats in the ramshackle home by the time they met the brothers, the report said.

Grey Gardens contained piles of garbage that were five feet high, and the directors sported flea collars while filming, according to the website.

The Bouvier-Beales in the 1920s snapped up the home, which later became run-down, according to Newsday.

Ben Bradlee, an editor for The Washington Post, and his journalist wife, Sally Quinn, bought the home from 'Little Edie' in 1979 following the 1977 death of 'Big Edie,' the report said.

In a piece for Architectural Digest, Quinn wrote: 'Inside, the cat smell was overpowering. The floor was part dirt. The ceiling was caving in. Raccoons peered at me through the rafters.

'Some twenty cats scurried as we entered each room. Still I thought it was the prettiest house I had ever seen.'

She said that Little Edie told her: 'You are meant to have this house. My mother has told me I must sell it to you. You are the only one who will return it to its original glory. Everyone else wants to tear it down.' 

Bradlee and Quinn were close friends of John and Jackie Kennedy, realtor Michael Schultz told Newsday.

Grey Gardens was renovated by the new owners, who spent most Augusts there until Bradlee's death, according to the newspaper. He died in 2014.

Quinn told The Wall Street Journal: 'It just wasn't the same without him. It's a magical place and we had a magical life there, but that part of my life is over now. I want to move on.'

The three-story, shingle-style home was built in 1897. It features seven bedrooms and six-and-a-half bathrooms.

An online listing says: 'Situated near Lily Pond Lane and Georgica Beach, this one of a kind compound is approximately two acres and is a stone throw to the ocean. 

'The property has been restored with an eye to history and lovingly maintained for the past 40 years.

The listing proclaims: 'Tucked away in the lush and elaborate gardens is a charming stucco cottage, heated gunite pool and an irreplaceable Har-Tru Tennis court.

'This historic home was visited by Jackie Kennedy when owned by her eccentric aunt and cousin -Edith Bouvier Beale and Edith Beale.'
