Sam John Hopkins (March 15, 1912 – January 30, 1982), better known as Lightnin’ Hopkins, was an American country blues singer, songwriter, guitarist, and occasional pianist, from Centerville, Texas. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Hopkins number 71 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.
Musicologist Robert "Mack" McCormick opined that Hopkins is "The embodiment of the jazz-and-poetry spirit, representing its ancient form in the single creator whose words and music are one act".
As a child, Sam John Hopkins, born in Centerville, Texas, was immersed in the sounds of the blues. He developed a deep appreciation for this music at the age of 8, when he met Blind Lemon Jefferson at a church picnic in Buffalo, Texas. That day, Hopkins felt the blues was "in him". He went on to learn from his older (distant) cousin, country blues singer Alger "Texas" Alexander. (Hopkins had another cousin, the Texas electric blues guitarist Frankie Lee Sims, with whom he later recorded.) Hopkins began accompanying Blind Lemon Jefferson on guitar in informal church gatherings. Jefferson reputedly never let anyone play with him except young Hopkins, and Hopkins learned much from Jefferson at these gatherings.
Hopkins is an English, Welsh and Irish patronymic surname. The English and Welsh derivations mean "son of Hob". It derives from the Germanic warrior name Hrod-berht, translated as "renowned-fame". It was 'borrowed' into French, where the spelling was changed from "Hob" to "Robert". The name in Ireland is an Anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic name Mac Oibicin. The name increased in popularity in, and became associated with, Wales around the 17th century. The Robert spelling was introduced to England and Scotland after the Norman conquest of England.
HBO World Championship Boxing is an American sports television series, premiering in January 1973 that has shown a number of significant boxing events since then.
WCB's first event was fought in Kingston, Jamaica, where George Foreman defeated Joe Frazier in two rounds to win the world heavyweight championship.
HBO (Home Box Office) is an American premium cable and satellite television network that is owned by Home Box Office Inc., the cable flagship division of Time Warner. HBO's programming consists primarily of theatrically released motion pictures and original television series, along with made-for-cable movies and documentaries, boxing matches and occasional stand-up comedy and concert specials.
It is the oldest and longest continuously operating pay television service (basic or premium) in the United States, having been in operation since November 8, 1972. In 2014, HBO had an adjusted operating income of US$1.79 billion, compared to the US$1.68 billion it accrued in 2013.
As of July 2015, HBO's programming is available to approximately 36,483,000 households with at least one television set (31.3% of all cable, satellite and telco customers) in the United States (36,013,000 subscribers or 30.9% of all households with pay television service receive at least HBO's primary channel), making it the second largest premium channel in the United States (Encore's programming reaches 40.54 million pay television households as of July 2015). In addition to its U.S. subscriber base, HBO broadcasts in at least 151 countries, covering approximately 122 million subscribers worldwide.
"Not Now" is a song by American rock band Blink-182, released on November 28, 2005, as the lead single from the group's first compilation album, Greatest Hits (2005). The song was composed and recorded during the sessions that produced Blink-182 (2003).
The song reached No. 18 on Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart and No. 30 on the UK Singles Chart. This song also gave its name to a rock band in Glennallen, AK.
The song concerns death and miscommunication. The song's guitar riffs were compared to the Descendents, and are interspersed by verses containing a church organ.
"Not Now" was first released for download on the iTunes Music Store on the day of the album's release. It was included as a bonus track on the UK edition of Blink-182, although it is unclear why it was originally left off the track listing of the international edition. The song was also included on Atticus: ...Dragging the Lake, Vol. 3 (2005), a compilation album released by DeLonge's clothing company, Atticus Clothing. Both of these physical releases are a slightly shorter edit, where the bridge is shortened, making it roughly 15 seconds shorter.

Lightnin' Hopkins playing 'Mister Charlie'. this is taken from the Les Blank documentary 'The Blues According to Lightnin' Hopkins'. Before singing this, he tells the story of a boy who stutters badly. When he tries telling his boss, Mister Charlie, his mill is burning down, Mister Charlie can't understand him so he asks the boy to sing if he can't speak. I highly recommend both this documentary and 'A Well Spent Life', also by Blank which showcases Mance Lipscomb.

In this video I compiled brief interviews with Jimmie Vaughan and B. B. King talking about Lighnin Hopkins and his fundamental role in the history of blues music. These are followed by three videos showing Lightnin' Hopkins performing "Lightnin's Blues", "Mojo Hand" and "What'd I say?"
In his own words and "own own" music, Lightnin' Hopkins reveals the inspiration for his blues. In Les Blank's film (www.lesblank.com) he sings, jives, ponders. He boogies at an outdoor barbeque and a black rodeo, and takes you with him on a homecoming visit to his boyhood home of Centerville, Texas. --Carmen Moore, The Village Voice
Houston-based Fast Cut Films, in association with Sunset Productions, is working on a documentary feature film, "Where Lightnin' Strikes," about the life and times of Houston blues legend Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins (1912-1982). His music inspired generations around the world from the Texas Gulf Coast, Mississippi delta to the British invasion. The enduring musical journey of Sam Lightnin' Hopkins began on a cotton farm in Centerville,Texas in 1912. He was drawn to the music he heard played by an older brother. After meeting up with Dallas bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson, Sam left the hardscrabble life of the Texas cotton fields, determined to play his way to better circumstances. Possessing a sharp wit and a unique ability for endless improvisation, Lightnin became a master storyteller. He wa...
