You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Wikipedia Reviewer.svg

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. —DoRD (talk) 13:44, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

SEPTA Regional Rail Bridge = PA Railroad Bridge???[edit]

An 1886 map has a railroad bridge at the site of the current SEPTA Regional Rail Bridge. The bridge has the label Penna RR Bridge. Though the original bridge led to a high level grade and the current rails descend to below ground, this might suggest a much older name than SEPTA et al. Map – Plate 1 of JL Smith's Philadelphia 1886 West, Wards 24 and 27 – is on-line at http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/83014/Plate+001/Philadelphia+1886+West+-+Wards+24+and+27/Pennsylvania/ Bridge is in lower-left corner. Breaks on your user page[edit]

I noticed you have a lot of html breaks on your user page. One good alternative is to use {{break}} It has a parameter so you can do multiple line breaks like {{break|20}} Ryan Vesey Review me! 01:15, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

GOCE word counts[edit]

Hi. I'm just checking through the drive page and found that your word counts add up to a different number than you've stated for the total. But (fascinated with a 5-word count) I took a look at Flag Day (disambiguation) and realised you only counted what DrPDA would have spotted. The list would have added another 249 to that count. So I don't want to do a "correction" that is wrong. What's the right thing here? --Stfg (talk) 10:02, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

The right thing is to add up what I have entered: 151 + 25 + 11 + 607 + 5 + 385 + 20 + 620 + 333 + 303 + 836 + 76 + 591 = 3,963, and then add 2123 rollover, making 6086. The numbers I have entered are those that "Page size" in the menu provide. Lists and disambiguation pages are mostly entries with *, which are not counted by "Page size" in the word count. You are right, my total was wrong, but I am content with the 5, and 11, and 20, and 25 counts. I have corrected my total. Please explain to me how you make the page of 5 have a count of 249, but I don't care if I am a bit low on my total. --DThomsen8 (talk) 12:44, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks very much. I made it 254 (249 extra) by copying into a word processor and using its word count. I do that (several of us do), not for raw lists of names and suchlike that don't require copy editing, but for lists of prose entries that do, like the one in that page. The entry in the total-words field should be just the total for articles; we add in the rollover before giving out the barnstars. This is needed for the large counts because leaderboard entries only consider words done in the current drive, and for consistency otherwise. I'll make that change now. Your barnstar and rollover to May are calculated from the 6086 figure, of course. Regards, --Stfg (talk) 13:06, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
I did not know that the total was before the rollover number was added, even though I have participated in several earlier drives. Well, if you are going to increase the Flag Day count, would List of alternate history fiction be increased way beyond 11? What about 25 words for List of local governments in the United Kingdom?--DThomsen8 (talk) 13:16, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
Yes, you were an well-known member of GOCE before I ever arrived. I think I'd have done the same as you did in both those cases. There's a lot of prose in List of alternate history fiction, possibly over 7000 words, but as there was only the one typo I think you did the respectable thing there. In List of local governments in the United Kingdom there's not much prose. You did what the article needed, and I certainly wouldn't nickel-and-dime you if you felt a bit more credit was due, but once again I think I'd have done the same. What definitely has to be said is THANK YOU for being willing to look at such articles even though the amount of credit you were expecting for them was so small. I'm going to go and change the count for Flag Day (disambiguation) now, but will leave the other two to your discretion. Best regards, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 16:07, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
We agree entirely, Simon. I only asked because I like to understand how any process works, and not because I want any more credit. There is a small ulterior motive to doing lists and other very short articles, it can boost the number of articles done, and improve the overall statistics. This month I was not quick enough to get on the leader board by the number of articles, let alone word count, but some drives I have a list of targets organized for the first few days, and go flying into it, only to slow down later. I was also looking over a long article, but I finally decided it was too hard for this month. I do some things for every article I do copy editing on that is not strictly required, especially I make sure the talk page has the appropriate templates, and if it has comments without a heading, I put in a ==Comment== section head. I also try to fix orphan status, too. Now April is here, I have a month off from copy editing, but I do other systematic work, trying to get all Delaware articles to have templates, and trying to get the Category:All unreviewed new articles number down carefully, adding tags for deficiencies that I don't correct and talk page templates. Maybe you might like to do a few of those? --DThomsen8 (talk) 18:15, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

UPenn[edit]

I used AWB to gather a list of articles missing the WikiProject University of Pennsylvania tag from Category:University of Pennsylvania and it's subcats. The list includes alumni of UPenn. Should they get the tag, or should I filter them out of the list. Once I'm done, I'll put in a bot request to tag all of the articles if there are a lot. Ryan Vesey 15:14, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Feel free to move this to the WikiProject page if you think it should be there. Ryan Vesey 15:15, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Good work! Go ahead and tag them all. I see your good work elsewhere, too. Penn may have more entries than Penn State or Pitt when you are done. --DThomsen8 (talk) 15:19, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Okay, I'll quick notify the other members to see if there's any opposition and put in the bot request within the next few days. There are 2381 pages I'd tag. I'll post the list in a sandbox. It's amazing some of the things that we missed (like The Daily Pennsylvanian). It's been a long time since I've done any work on those articles (and will still be a long time outside of the tagging. I've currently got a list of 9,000 some Olympics articles that need to be checked and/or improved to include results. Plus I'm working on a couple of ship articles. Ryan Vesey 15:23, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Guyana Sources...[edit]

Hiya! Mike Christie has very kindly given us a list of online sources, and a list of books he has that WikiProject GY members could contact him about if they would like him to look something up in them (see my talkpage for more info)... I have added them to the sources list you made on the talkpage. It made me realise too that I should make a similar list of books I have available, so I will do this in the next day or two. As we've got a decent list of sources now, I wondered if we should perhaps add these to the main page of the project so they're more easily visible and accessible? Lorelei (talk) 01:12, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

I've had a go at doing something about this... I've drafted a WikiProject Guyana/Projects and Resources Page here. If you have the time, perhaps you could look it over quickly, and see if you think it's okay? If so, I'll move it into Wikipedia and then add a link from the main project page... Lorelei (talk) 13:49, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
We did parallel work without knowing what the other was doing. Please see the Guyana project page for the addition I made, based on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Pennsylvania#Divisions section. This uses two templates found in many project pages, so it is important to do things a standard way. What you have is much longer, but much of it can be inserted into what I created. Take a look. --DThomsen8 (talk) 21:33, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Oh, this is great – thank you :) Is there a standard place/form for including a 'sources' section? I saw the Pennsylvania project had an image sources section at the bottom of the page; would it work okay to do the same with our list of sources? Lorelei (talk) 21:58, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
I will work on the project page on Thursday, integrating what you have created with the framework I borrowed from the Pennsylvania project. I am not sure where to put the sources, perhaps on a secondary page attached to the project page. However, we must remember WP:BB is a Wikipedia principle. --DThomsen8 (talk) 01:29, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
That would be wonderful – thank you :) I noticed that WikiProject African Diaspora has a similar list of sources, which they put at the bottom of the page ... Lorelei (talk) 09:32, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Guyana Census[edit]

Hiya!

All the information about Official Censuses in Guyana I am taking from the (Gov. of Guyana) Bureau of Statistics Records for the 2002 Official Census. (I tried to track it down after seeing the population listings on the administrative regions which said they were from an official census but had no reference). Chapter 3 has all the information about the population for the administrative regions according to official censuses in 1980, 1991 and 2002 (p. 51). According to their website, the 2012 census has not yet been completed – and judging by the last one (2002, published in 2007) it may be sometime after that before the results are published. Following your tips about WebCite and archiving, I am trying to archive these documents to make sure they're there for future reference. Lorelei (talk) 16:09, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

So you are telling me that there are population numbers for administrative regions, but not for particular cities or towns? --DThomsen8 (talk) 16:14, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
I've had a quick scan of all the documents and can't find any listings of town/village populations... Lorelei (talk) 17:40, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
However, there are a few listings for major towns here though I can't tell how reliable this source is... Lorelei (talk) 17:43, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
Actually Dthomsen8, the information is all there at the Bureau of Stats website (address given above). Down towards the bottom of the page, they give links to records made up at town-level and village-level (as well as NDC-level i.e. regional). I've just downloaded and opened these, and the 'Gender' section of both sets of documents also gives a 'total' listing for each town and village :) Lorelei (talk) 18:24, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
So, develop a standard archived source for population of towns as an inline citation, and be ready to use it on any particular town now without that information. Same thing for administrative districts. Many places are stubs, but with three inline citations, could become start level articles. --DThomsen8 (talk) 18:30, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
Great! One problem I am having is that I can't figure out how I would be able to archive these sources, as I can't produce an url for specific documents (as they're all links to zip/compressed downloads) but only to the Bureau of Statistics website... Is there any way around this? I noticed that whoever created the Regions of Guyana article had managed to open one of the documents as a web-page with an address (and I used this to create the link in all the other articles), but my computer automatically 'opens' these as PDF downloads, and therefore without an url. Do you know of any way around this? Lorelei (talk) 18:46, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Do I know of a way around this? No, but I will look into it. Please provide the URL and anything else that might help, right here with leading * for formatting. --DThomsen8 (talk) 18:51, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Ideally, it would be great if we could archive:
  • Town Level Data by Population
  • Village Level Data by Population
  • At least Chapter 3 of the 2002 Population & Housing Census – Guyana National Report (ideally the whole report)
Thank you so much for looking into this. Lorelei (talk) 19:06, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Visit to Greater Manchester[edit]

Thanks for taking the time to fill out the talk page stubs for articles in Category:Textile mills owned by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation Category:Textile mills in Tameside or was it {{Lancashire Cotton}} {{Lancashire Cotton Corporation}} this is greatly appreciated. Looking for feedback as always I sampled some of the pages and found that my quality assessment criteria and the one you are using appear to be widely different. Obviously I am missing something. Can I just take Talk:Stalybridge Mill, Stalybridge as an example. This is a 11000 char article, with infobox, image and architects drawing all referenced- it was spelling checked in mid 2011 then ce by Malleus. It has been stable since then. Why do you reckon this is a stub. I don't usually assess articles I have started but if you look at User:ClemRutter/Assessment#C class you see why I would have placed it as a C class. Others are more subtle- but in general not one of the articles would be lower than a start class each having satisfied this statement:

Start -An article that is developing, but which is quite incomplete and may require further reliable sources. It provides some meaningful content, but the majority of readers will need more.

More detailed criteria
The article has a usable amount of good content- but is not comprehensive
The article must satisfy fundamental content policies such as notability.
Biography articles must satisfy fundamental BLP policies.
The article must provide sources to establish verifiability.
The article can be weak in many areas. (C&P from User:ClemRutter/Assessment)

Or is it that I am reading to much into the levels you gave- and your intention was merely to plug the absence of any parameters? Still, what ever the answer you are most welcome to pop by for coffee and biscuits. --ClemRutter (talk) 10:29, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your gracious invitation for coffee and biscuits, but I would prefer that eminently English beverage, tea. My effort yesterday was to add templates to most of the Mills articles, which of necessity means a good many Greater Manchester articles. I should say that I was impressed by the quality of the articles on English cotton mills, and I see that you were the creator of many of them. This morning my wife wants me to go food shopping, so I will respond in detail later today. I don't doubt that some articles are under-rated. --DThomsen8 (talk) 13:41, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Requested Articles[edit]

Hi! I am trying to reinvigorate Wikipedia:WikiProject Requested Articles, which, if I get enough pointers that there is some interest, I will re-design, with a design similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors, involving drives, to decrease the number of articles listed in the various subpages, and blue link blitzes, involving editors removing all created pages. I am planning, with sufficient interest, to make requested articles 'stricter', i.e. you have to provide two reliable sources, and write a short note explaining why the requested article is notable. There would be a reward system, involving adapted barnstars, similar to the Guild of Copy Editors have here and here. If you have any questions about my aim, or want to indicate that you would sign up to the WikiProject, please say so on my talk page. Thanks! Matty.007 16:34, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

Heritage preservation in South Korea[edit]

Hello, I am still working on this article. That's why there is a work in progress template on it. And that's why it is orphan and the two sections empty. What's the use of indicating that I am working on an article if others still can put problem templates on them before I even finished it? And it's not like I abandoned the article for a week or something. Please be a bit more patient before tagging work in progress articles. Thank you. Teemeah 편지 (letter) 07:45, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

International System of Units[edit]

This edit to International System of Units contained one clear error: "kgs" was changed to "kg" even though "kgs" was pointed out by the text as an example of what not to do.

The edit also converted many HTML entities to the corresponding characters even though it would be difficult for an editor to distinguish the characters from many similar entities. For example, it is hard to distinguish · from the bullet operator, ∙, Unicode U+2219. So it is better to leave the HTML entities alone, allowing editors to plainly see which symbol is intended. Why adding WikiProject Switzerland?[edit]

Why did you add the WikiProject Switzerland to the talk page of Handpan? I don't see any special relationship to Switzerland. The term describes a group of instruments built and played in many different countries. If there would be a special country relationship, it would be USA because the term was originally invented in USA. But even this wouldn't make any sense. And I am convinced that there is nobody in this WikiProject who is able to improve this article, because knowing Switzerland will not help. There is nothing to tell about Handpan in relation to Switzerland. --Ixkeys (talk) 22:21, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

The first sentence of the article is "Handpan is an expression describing a group of musical instruments resulting from a growing worldwide interest in the Hang, an instrument invented and built by the Swiss company PANArt Hangbau AG." The connection with Switzerland is right there, the manfacturer of the instrument.--DThomsen8 (talk) 01:21, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
There are three arguments against this: 1) It is completely irrelevant, that PANArt is in Switzerland. Because it is irrelevant I have deleted the term Swiss in the article. 2) PANArt is not the manufacturer of handpans. As you can read in the article PANArt repudiates the expression handpan to describe the Hang. (If someone would say PANArt is building handpans, this would be personal opinion or own research). 3) If the WikeProject Switzerland is added we also have to add the WikiProjects USA, Germany, Spain, France, Bali and Russia because the manufactures of handpans mentioned in the article are located there. --Ixkeys (talk) 11:33, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
Apparently, I was misled by the lead sentence. --DThomsen8 (talk) 11:44, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Cherokee Nation of Mexico[edit]

Hi, Dthomsen8, thanks for the cleanup! We are newbies here, and trying to figure all this out. Oddly, we are getting some static for using James Mooney (the famous Smithsonian ethnologist) as a source because of political incorrectness amongst some circles in Indian Country. That is sad, because if it was not for him, Indians would have no rights to worship as they please because of US Gov't policy in his day. He saw that Indian spiritual leaders were being assassinated, so he knew that Indian religions had to get up under the 1st Amendment of the US Constitution, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Native American Church on the Rosebud reservation. We work on a daily basis with his descendant James Warren "Flaming Eagle" Mooney aka James WFE Mooney. Myself and Chief Charles Rogers are branch pastor in that church. James WFE Mooney was given a blessing by the head of the Native American Church to take the medicine off the reservation, even to non-Indian white people. He was eventually arrested in Utah, was charged with numerous felonies, threatened with life in prison, and persecuted by the DEA whose acts of intimidation against the witnesses to that aforementioned blessing were exposed to his legal defense team, who threatened the witnesses to Leslie Fool Bull's blessing to James WFE Mooney with being branded on trumped up child porn charges. Once that cat was out of the bag, the US Govt folded and the Utah Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision that non Indians may worship as they please... imagine that. Now we have three unanimous court decisions in our favor and our lawsuit against the DEA is being heard in a few months. Now this week we have had Rhodium level wiki contributor and others who want to say using James Mooney as a source is bogus because in many minds what he reported to the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian was unreliable because of mistranslations. Most of this attitude comes from Indians who do not practice native American religions as we do. A Rhodium level contributor even removed our references to Native American Religions of Four Mothers and Stomp Dance and slashed an entire section on our Native American Church, The Ancient Cherokee Church of The One God Yo He Waaah, claiming it did not belong on Wikipedia! He also removed our reference to having Cherokee speakers amongst us, even though the author of the books he was citing, Cherokee national language treasure elder Durbin Feeling, is a very close associate of our Chief(s). Anyway, we know we have a lot of cleanup to do, some slashing and burning of primary research, etc. etc. PLEASE help us keep an eye on these other wiki contribs who are trampling our 1st amendment religious rights and accusing us of doing "promotion" of our organization when the Cherokee Nation at Tahlequah is doing much the same and has recently caught on video say they spent nearly a million dollars in legal fees trying to suppress other Cherokee organizations... organizations like ours. Thank you so much! Aniyunwiya (talk) 16:10, 23 August 2013 (UTC) Aniyunwiya

As a Senior Editor, I have improved the article by adding {{WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America|class=start}} to the talk page, running the Reflinks tool on the references, removing some of the tags, and removing new article review tag. GOCE drive: WP:INUNIVERSE on Ever 17: The Out of Infinity[edit]

Hi, in the GOCE drive I've been working on Ever 17: The Out of Infinity. However, the article has problems with WP:INUNIVERSE, which I don't have the expertise to sort. Am I allowed to abandon the copyedit, place a {{universe}} tag and take it of my list or do I have to finish it? Thanks, RainCity471report my errorslist of failures 18:08, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

You do not have to finish it, and in fact, the WP:INUNIVERSE elements make it unwise to go further. Go ahead with the {{[[Template:universe|universe]]} tag, and do not mark it for copyediting.--DThomsen8 (talk) 18:57, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
By the way, I would suggest the {{GOCEeffort|user=RainCity471|date=11 September 2013}} template to mark the beginning of your copy editing effort on an article, and placing the {{GOCE|user=RainCity471|date=11 September 2013}} tag on the talk page when you finish.--DThomsen8 (talk) 22:10, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I've closed the copyedit and placed {{GOCEreviewed}} on the talk. I'll use {{GOCEeffort}} on the article I'm on at the moment.
By the way, does GOCE effort go on the talk page of the article or on the article itself? Thanks, RainCity471report my errorslist of failures 18:48, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
The {{GOCEeffort|user=RainCity471|date=11 September 2013}} template goes on the article, which warns other editors that the copyediting is in progress. They should work elsewhere, with over 3,000 copyedit tags and even more requests, plenty to choose from.--DThomsen8 (talk) 18:59, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Grand-daughter[edit]

Grand-daughter should not be characterised as a typo as you did here, it is a legitimate spelling. With a huge number of hits on gbooks it can hardly be a misspelling, and I note that the OED chooses to use grand-daughter as the headword in preference to granddaughter which redirects to it. OED does not even bother to give granddaughter as an alternative form. This is to be compared to the OED entry for scimitar, for example, which lists forty-four alternative spellings. I assume that you had not noticed that you had already made this edit once before and been reverted. It is not really on to reapply a reverted edit without any explanation. Loggerhead sea turtle[edit]

Thanks for the typo check on this article, unfortunately AWB made a mistake. It's spelt Ballyhealy, a beautiful place, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9UFJf-Gw34. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 00:05, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

I have added {{Sic}} following Ballyhealy, as an alert to any subsequent AWB user to not do that change. I am puzzled that AWB did this change without justification.--DThomsen8 (talk) 02:10, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
I'm not surprised. The existing generic -ally rule is a rather blunt instrument making many mistakes. I spent some time looking at the existing 19 rules dealing with words ending in -ally and was working on a one rule -ally replacement by got distracted by life before I finished it. I'm not sure what happens at those events to be honest, a few speakers and a meet up? As I live about 5 hours travel (one way) from London, and claiming travel expenses is not possible, then I'm unlikely ever to attend. Why is it not done with a webinar or similar inclusive technology, that almost anyone could use? Not necessarily as a replacement, but as well as a physical get together. Beginning of MassMessage, end of EdwardsBot[edit]

Hi. You're being contacted as you're listed as an EdwardsBot user.

MassMessage has been deployed to all Wikimedia wikis. For help using the new tool, please check out its help page or drop a note on Meta-Wiki.

With over 400,000 edits to Wikimedia wikis, EdwardsBot has served us well; however EdwardsBot will no longer perform local or global message delivery after December 31, 2013.

A huge thanks to Legoktm, Reedy, Aaron Schulz and everyone else who helped to get MassMessage deployed. --MZMcBride (talk) 02:36, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Spellings[edit]

Please be aware when editing lists of historical events (i.e. shipwrecks) that spellings then and spellings now are not necessarily the same. I am careful to preserve "misspellings" in ship names and do tag them with <!--per source--> where the spelling is obviously "wrong" to modern eyes. Some spellings are not so obviously wrong and may not get tagged. Mjroots (talk) 08:56, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

I am aware of this, and I try to look over AWB changes and not do some of them, especially in non-English phrases. Names of ships are especially tricky. The use of {{Sic}} is a flag to AWB users and others that a spelling is deliberate, even when it looks wrong to modern eyes.

Kimberly Wright Cassidy[edit]

Hi Dthomsen8! I agree with your point that cleanup templates don't belong in draft articles, in the same way they don't belong in AFC articles. When I created my edit list in AWB, I merely told AWB to get a list from new articles. The Kimberly Wright Cassidy article, though titled "Draft Kimberly Wright Cassidy" was actually in mainspace. I've since moved it to "Draft:Kimberly Wright Cassidy". I hope that doesn't mess anything up. I've also removed the other cleanup template that was on the page. Since I notice you have far more edits under your belt than I, if I didn't go about this the correct way, I'm all ears for learning. :D Regards, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:12, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Your draft article, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Ada Hittchins[edit]

Hello Dthomsen8. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Ada Hittchins".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Ada Hittchins}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, click "Save page", and an administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. JMHamo (talk) 17:11, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Dave, I've asked if they can restore this as "Ada Hitchins", and offered to work on it. Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 22:23, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Your submission at AfC Ada Hittchins was accepted[edit]

Talk:Marmaray[edit]

Hi! You've added a WP:Bridges tag onto Talk:Marmaray. I'm not sure whether this WP covers tunnels as well because Marmaray is an undersea tunnel and not a bridge. Please recheck and ignore my comment if the WP tag is correct in any case. Best. --CeeGee 09:27, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Tunnels are included with the WikiProject Bridges, see Talk:Tunnel. This is not widely known, and many famous tunnels do not have WikiProject Bridges on their talk pages. Thank you for inquiring, and I am going to make an effort on tunnels I frequently use.--DThomsen8 (talk) 13:42, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for your explanation. Creation of a WP:Tunnels, which can redirect to WP:Bridges, or renaming of the latter to WP:Bridges and Tunnels would be more helpful, if possible. Best. --CeeGee 19:22, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Handy tips![edit]

After initially adding the {{linkrot}} tag there is no need to save the page, simply preview the page and click the link to the Reflinks tool from there.

After manually amending the Reflinks form boxes to add any extra information such as author details that Reflinks didn't pick up, as well as clean up the title and publisher, etc, click "show preview" or "show changes" and you can then carry on editing the page in the normal edit-form before finally clicking "save".

When adding a non-English title, use |trans_title= to add an English translation of the title.

It should be a rarity to add a {{dead link}} template to a reference. Most referenced URLs have at some point been archived by the Wayback Machine. It is a simple matter to link to that archive using |archiveurl=

Hope this is useful. – 79.67.253.47 (talk) 07:18, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

International Journal of Business and Emerging Markets[edit]

I saw your note on the talk page for International Journal of Business and Emerging Markets. If you feel the article is notable, you can remove the prod tag. If the article has been deleted, you can request that it be restored. It is likely, however, that another editor will send the article to AfD. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 23:09, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for your timely advice. If the article goes to AfD, notification in three other projects will give better exposure.--DThomsen8 (talk) 23:18, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
If you can find references or anything else that would firmly establish notability for the article, please add that material. This is Delahays replying to your note about Robert Milligan _ I am going away just now – today – for 5 weeks when I won't be online. You may find stuff in the Barbican Library, but I don't know it and I don't know what you will find. You might get better luck with the Museum of Docklands. For the Forteath links in Jamaica, which will at least tie him to Morayshire contacts other than his wife, – not the key issue, but a start – John Kelly's (PROB 11/1424) will will help a bit but you will need to go to the PRO for it unless you want to stump up for a download – could be the Barbican Library might have online access, BUT... There are a number of Dumfries sources, but it's possible the Barbican has never bothered about them and it may not know where Dumfries is. (This is NOT a joke) As an Englishman normally domiciled in Scotland I find all this maddening, because Milligan's Scottishness is taken for granted in Scotland, rightly. You could try ringing the Dumfries and Galloway archives. You might be lucky. Otherwise, you could do what I did and Google him. And don't stop at Wikipedia. There are Jamaica online sources too. The ScotlandsPeople Database is expensive to use unless you are fairly sure in the first place, and though I have a memory of some Dumfries burgh kin, I can't check for them just now. Family Search is useless for detailed research in Scotland, because ScotlandsPeople, run by DC Thomson for profit has exclusive reproduction rights from the SRO. I'll try and produce more detailed evidence by the end of September. BestDelahays (talk) 08:32, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

This is memory, so don't hold me to it. I THINK that you may get some traction in London if you look for a Jamaica West India merchant called DAVID Milligan who died in the late 1798. This was actually David Milligan of DALSKAIRTH, in Galloway. The Gentleman's Magazine and kindreed publications note his death, but they also mention his widow. If you want to get into ScotlansPeople, it could be that that Dalskairth in the parish of TRAQUAIR, might lead you in a useful direction. There is a PCC Will but the National Archives downloading service is on the blink and I can't access the whole of it. What I can access indicates that it's in the Scottish form, and the bit about sons and property is inaccessible, but it wouldn't have been processed both in Scotland and by the PCC if it didn't have some mention of overseas property. I've sent a complaint, so they might be getting around to fixing it by Tuesday. Best I can do just now.Delahays (talk) 09:34, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, Dalskairth is in TROQUEER parish – not Traquair. It counts as Kircudbrightshire, or did, but it's not far from Dumfries. The only Kirkcudbright 1746 birth of a Robert Milligan on 8 August 1746 was to an innkeeper and his wife, but the witnesses to the baptism were both merchants.- doesn't mean much, but it points in the right direction. The 1756 birth isn't very helpfully registered. Positively the last I can do today, David Milligan says his family was from a FARM at Dalskairth, not Dalskairth house, but it's worth checking on both.Delahays (talk) 09:47, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

You'll need to check this with David Milligan's will, if they can get it to you and with the online source http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~alanmilliken/regarde_bien/15.html

but it loks as though I wasn't raving when I remembered David Milligan. this source, run by an alan millken confirms David was Robert's cousin, and left him his fortune after keeping it in trust for his widow. It also places Robert as the son of James Milligan of Dumfried born 19 August 1746, and gives his wife and descendants. This is probably better than pfaffing around in the Barbican Library, and when you do go, it will give you something to go on. I hope I can catch my train now! Good Luck and keep in touch.Delahays (talk) 10:03, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Dthomsen8. I've chatted with SPhilbrick (you can see our conversation on his talk page), and have now put the following articles in your userspace: User:Dthomsen8/Cherry Street (Philadelphia), User:Dthomsen8/Locust Street (Philadelphia), User:Dthomsen8/Pine Street (Philadelphia), User:Dthomsen8/Race Street (Philadelphia), User:Dthomsen8/Snyder Avenue and User:Dthomsen8/Spruce Street (Philadelphia).

If you can spend a little time on each, expanding them a bit – I'd suggest a rule of thumb, at least double the size of the text – then no one can say they're not substantially contributed to by you. Another option would be to remove all the text that's there (leaving the layout and images and templates and such) and re-write the article in your own words.

Let me know if you're struggling. Once you've substantially contributed to the articles, feel free to move them to the main space, and then we're all good to go. WormTT(talk) 13:44, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Very nice work with these five streets. Thank you. I am in Iceland until Friday, so I may not do much before then, it depends on my energy in the evening hours. I can add images when I am home, too.--DThomsen8 (talk) 17:35, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

The Art of Dialling[edit]

The first two paras of the text are an exact copy of the lot description here. The first paragraph of the text was just the title, not copyright. The second para, giving other non-content data, is copyright, even including the auction lot number! Removing the copyrighted text would leave little but the title as the content. Even the full text barely amounts to an encyclopaedia article, since the final short sentence, probably not copyright, tells us nothing about the article's supposed topic, a book, but just that the author was someone's brother-in-law.

It was tagged as copyright by an experienced contributor, and, having looked again in the light of your comment, I still can't see how it is anything but that. Jimfbleaktalk to me? 15:49, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Robert Milligan[edit]

Just looked at Robert Milligan. He still seems to be English. Puzzlingly, I seem to have been on the talk page relating to him on August 3 this year – I almost certainly wasn't – I think this debate is about twelve months older than that. Have you come across any good reasons why I should not simply correct the error? As an Englishman who tried to teach history in Scotland for over 25 years, I'm perhaps over-sensitive on the issue, but even slighter similar errors have led to avoidable bad feeling -and not just with Nationalists. It's common politeness to get a UK subject's nationality right. Best wishes DelahaysDelahays (talk) 17:40, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Robert Milligan again Sorry I should have spelt this out. Try Rootsweb in a post called The Regarde bien no 15. It needs a bit of reading but it offers a full genealogy of a number of Milligan famillies from Dumfries and Galloway and explicit links to Robert Milligan of the West India docks – though sources aren't fulluy supplied it seems to confirm my view that James Milligan innkeeper was his father. You are quite right about Milligan, and I have gone ahead and changed the article to Scottish. --DThomsen8 (talk) 00:46, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

Kazakhstan[edit]

Dear Mr. Thomsen,

where comes your interest of Central Asia?--Kopiersperre (talk) 22:30, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

I have been doing improvements on neglected countries for years, now, check out my work on Guyana as one example. The Central Asian countries are interesting from their long history of involvement with Europe and Western Asia, and their independence (in varying degrees) from Russia. My interest was stirred again by meeting college students and their teachers from Kazakhstan at Wikimania 2014 in London in August. Right now I am pressed for time, but I will add more tomorrow.--DThomsen8 (talk) 22:49, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
I started reading about Central Asia with "On the Trail of Genghis Khan: An Epic Journey Through the Land of the Nomads" by Tim Cope, and I commend that to you.--DThomsen8 (talk) 17:59, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Common knowledge?[edit]

Hi David, it is my great pleasure to let you know that Pacific Standard has reviewed my book, too! Previously it was reviewed by Forbes and Signpost, Motherboard, the Wikipedian, and mentioned in the Chronicle, as well as in my own op-eds in the Slate, and the Daily Dot, as well as the Chronicle. The Polish edition was covered in three largest newspapers in Poland: Gazeta Wyborcza (currently paywalled), Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, and Rzeczpospolita. best Pundit|utter 19:25, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Las Olas Blvd[edit]

I saw that you just added Las Olas Blvd to the Wikproject Miami. Not sure if you are aware but Las Olas is not a part of Miami but instead is in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale? Not sure as to why it would be added to the Miami Wikiproject? --Canyouhearmenow 01:43, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

If you examine the history, I added {{WikiProject U.S. Streets|class=start|importance=low}} to the talk page, but somebody else put the Miami template there, and I failed to check the city in the article. I changed Miami to Florida. Thanks for your message.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I am glad you fixed it. I am reluctant to change things done by other experienced editors hence the reason of my contact to you. I simply did not look at the history. Thank you! --Canyouhearmenow 02:06, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi Dave, What do you think of the idea of donating a book about using Wikipedia to the silent auction for the Small Museums Assocation conference? (Maybe a hat, too?) I might have a couple of other small things we could add.Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 14:36, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

I will bring some copies of John Broughton's Wikipedia:The Missing Manual and Phoebe Ayers' How Wikipedia Works to the meeting tomorrow, so you can have two books for the SMA auction, and two books for the CHF library, if they will accept them. Send me the meeting details right here.--DThomsen8 (talk) 20:34, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
Hi Dave! I was able to confirm that the Small Museum Association can give me a receipt for the donated books. Thank you again. Also, I have your scarf from the last GLAM Cafe Meetup – I'll try to bring it to the next one on Tuesday, Feb 10, at UPenn. About your (non)participation in the January 2012 SOPA vote[edit]

Hi Dthomsen8. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you may know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Wikipedia. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Wikipedia's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). I am now developing a supplementary paper, which analyzes why many editors did not take part in that vote. Which is where you come in :) You are a highly active Wikipedian (89th), and you were active back during the January 2012 discussion/voting for the SOPA, yet you did not chose to participate in said vote. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me why was that so? For your convenience, I prepared a short survey at meta, which should not take more than a minute of your time. I would dearly appreciate you taking this minute; not only as a Wikipedia researcher but as a fellow content creator and concerned member of the community (I believe your answers may help us eventually improve our policies and thus, the project's governance). PS. If you chose to reply here (on your userpage), please WP:ECHO me. Thank you! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:07, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

I wonder if I could ask for your support for my request at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Rivers#Stub.2Flow_rivers_articles. CONSOL Energy Wikipedia Page – Suggested Edits[edit]

Hi Dthomsen8,

I am on the communications team for Consol Energy. I would like to suggest several edits/updates to the Consol Energy Wikipedia page. A lot of the information listed is outdated and therefore no longer accurate. Please see my suggested edits and sourcing below. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for your time and help on this issue.

First paragraph:

"As of 2011..." should be replaced with: As of 2013, Consol had 3 billion tons of proven reserves, mainly in northern and central Appalachia and produced nearly 29 million tons of coal in the same year. The company has natural gas reserves totaling 5.7 trillion cu. ft. as of 2013 and produced 172.4 billion cubic feet in that year. Through the different services, it employs 3,890 people.

History:

To be added: In 2012, Consol Energy won the rights to drill the Marcellus Shale on leased acres at the Pittsburgh International Airport. Consol entered into the public-private partnership, agreeing to pay 500 million dollars over the next twenty years. In partnership, the airport will receive 18 percent royalties with an additional 50 million dollar bonus. It is estimated that the project will bring the airport around 20 to 25 million dollars annually over the next 20 years. This revenue is to be used to offset the airports 91 million dollar annual budget, as well as support improvements to infrastructure and paying off airport debt, currently shouldered by taxpayers.(i) In August 2014, after a year of talks with the township, the Federal Aviation Commission, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Allegheny County, Consol began drilling its first well on airport property.(ii)

In 2013, Consol sold it’s subsidiary, Consolidation Coal Company, to Murray Energy Corporation (MEC). This deal, valued at 3.5 billion dollars, included all five of their longwall coal mines in West Virginia, as well as Consol’s River and Dock Operations, comprised of 21 tow-boats and 600 barges, as well as 2.4 billion dollars of Consol’s balance sheet liabilities. These liabilities include 2.1 billion dollars in postretirement benefit plans, 105 million dollars of workers compensation, 61 million dollars of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, 13 million of long-term disabilities, and 149 million in environmental. With the deal Consol sold 1.1 billion tons of coal reserves, reflecting the trend of switching away from coal to focus on natural gas exploration and development.(iii) By selling the mines in conjuction with the liabilities, Consol cleared room in the balance sheet to further investment in Marcellus Shale.(iv)

Financials:

"In 2010..." should be replaced with: In 2013, Consol Energy had an annual revenue of 3.120 billion. Customers primarily include electric and steel mills in the U.S., but demand from European utilities has increased during the 2000s. Consol Energy was ranked number 434 on the Fortune 500 list in 2014.(v)

To be added: In December 2014, CONSOL announced its intent to pursue transactions that would result in changes to the company's organizational and management structure to better align the company to execute its strategy for its natural gas and coal operations in the Appalachian Basin. These anticipated transactions resulted in changes to the company's reportable segments effective for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2014. The Coal Division will now report the following segments: Pennsylvania Operations (Bailey, Enlow Fork, and Harvey mines), Virginia Operations (Buchanan Mine), and Other Operations (Miller Creek Complex). The E&P Division will now report the following segments: Marcellus Shale, Utica Shale, Coalbed Methane (CBM), and Other. (x)

Your thoughts?[edit]

Timeline of Philadelphia has a discussion about selection and inclusion criteria. Two editors are discussing it, but we have divergent views. More opinions would be helpful. – SummerPhDv2.0 13:11, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Maria D. Quiñones-Sanchez (and other Council articles?)[edit]

Knocking around some Philly articles, I found that

I updated the reference link and the accessdate, and deleted the external reference. That left the Ext Refs section empty, so I commented out the header. I also updated her name to "Quiñones-Sánchez" in the infobox and the Persondata, but not the DEFAULTSORT, which has no diacritics.

I have three questions:

  1. Did I do this right?
  2. Should the article be renamed "Maria Quiñones-Sánchez"? There are so many links to it that would have to be fixed that I hesitate. Or is there a program that can do it?
  3. Should we check the pages for other City Council members, and (shudder) possibly other city government members as well, for the change in URL format?

Please {{ping}} me to reply. --Thnidu (talk) 00:22, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

Free to create articles[edit]

Sorry I missed this, but at User_talk:Compassionate727#RfD you asked

"If Snyder Avenue, Pine Street Philladelphia and Locust Street (Philadelphia) are deleted as redirects, does that leave me and other editors free to create articles on those streets?--DThomsen8 (talk) 23:05, 1 July 2015 (UTC)"

In fact, you can always just overwrite a redirect, and the gnomes at RfD like me will just procedurally close it if a redirect has been turned into an article, WP:BOLD!. So yes, you can just overwrite them, no problem. (I have done so in the past when I think a redirect merits its own article). As I noted at the RfD, I think the (Philadelphia) qualification is unnecessary, since we don't have Locust Street unqualified. Of course, I (or you) could just move that across, but I don't like to do so when things are under discussion, it just confuses matters, in my eyes. Pine Street also is red so you can just put that there rather than with the (Philadelphia) suffix. I assume the two L's in your Philladelphia was just a typo. Si Trew (talk) 08:38, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Neihsial[edit]

Hi there. I checked this article for the drive. Good work, but there were still a couple of minor issues, mainly a bit of awkward wording in the final section. Just wanted to give you a heads up. If you already do this, please disregard, but I try to do a second read-through the day after I complete a copy edit just to make sure all is well. I can't tell you how many times I have spotted issues after the fact. In any case, thank you for your continued efforts with the drive! Best, Pax Verbum 18:38, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Please could you help me, I understand lead para and MOS issues, and I am mightily confused as to why Mankgunegara I deserves something which just adds to the woes of the tags on the article ? JarrahTree 01:46, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

I did nothing to the tags on the article yet, but I just added a inline citation, in Indonesian, and some better links. I would like to improve the article, but it is in such poor English I hesitate to try copyediting.--DThomsen8 (talk) 01:53, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

De facto prod challenge[edit]

Hello, Dthomsen8. :) I wanted to let you know that an article you prodded, and which was deleted as a result of that PROD, has been recreated by its original creator at Patrick McCauley. I've restored the history for attribution reasons (even though all creative content may be attributed to the individual who restored it) and wanted to drop you a courtesy notice in case the changes do not address your concerns. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:08, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

I am confused, since I did not do a PROD on that article, but perhaps on a different one. Please clear up my confusion.--DThomsen8 (talk) 15:29, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
Oh, you're right – it was the editor before you. :) When I was looking at the history, it was still deleted, and I believe you had placed the template. I'll let the person who actually PRODded it know. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:28, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
Tuesday is a special election in my district, but I plan to stop by briefly.--DThomsen8 (talk) 00:37, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject Brazil v WikiProject South America[edit]

Hi. I just reverted an edit of yours, which always feels rude — it certainly was not my intention. Then I noticed that you are quite actively tagging articles with WikiProject banners. Thank you! I too am actively tagging WikiProject Brazil articles, having created 8 new task forces this summer, and I am not alone. WikiProject Brazil has had a huge revival after the addition of these task force groups. There is a core group of enthusiastic taggers who have managed to chip away at the 10,000+ backlog of unassessed articles since June, bringing that number down to 342.

{{WikiProject South America}} should really be used for articles related to French Guiana, the Falklands (Malvinas), or other areas of South America without an active WikiProject of their own. Brazilian articles tagged as {{WikiProject South America}} are not included in the assessment categories associated with these new task forces that I mentioned, so we have been removing the Brazil=yes and Brazil-importance tags and replacing them with the {{WikiProject Brazil}} template and the task force tags. I believe Argentina and Uruguay have similar WikiProject specific tags that are not included if you use {{WikiProject South America}}, but I do not know all the details.

All this is to say, please don’t take offense at any untagging or retagging that you see me or other members of WikiProject Brazil doing. We aren’t trying to be difficult. Please do try to refrain from using the WP South America template, however, when it comes to Brazil-related articles. Thanks for all you do! giso6150 (talk) 02:50, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

I will refrain from changing Brazil talk pages, and from other large South America countries, but I presume you would allow {{WikiProject South America|class=stub|importance=|Falkland Islands=yes|Falkland-Islands-importance=low}} and other small places such as Guyana, which I did a lot of changes a few years ago. --DThomsen8 (talk) 13:29, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I agree with continuing to tag articles about the Falklands, Guyana, and other smaller countries with the South America WP template. giso6150 (talk) 13:36, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
Tell me where I sign up as a member to work on the 1,851 unassesed Brazil articles. --DThomsen8 (talk) 15:02, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I’m sure. There is a generic sign-up list for WikiProject Brazil as a whole. But as I said, there are also these eight task forces. Seven are part of {{WikiProject Brazil}}:
The eighth task force is part of {{WikiProject Football}}:
Each of the above have their own list of participants, but you are welcome to tag articles for any of them, even if you have not officially signed up. Of course, even if you are just adding the basic {{WikiProject Brazil}} template without evaluating the subject matter or adding any of the task force tags, it would still help out a lot. Thanks again! giso6150 (talk) 18:37, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

Olkhovska Iryna[edit]

You have done some excellent 'link rot' work on this article. Thank you. However, unless my eyes deceive me, her correct name is actually Iryna Olkhovska, and I think that an article in that name was recently speedily deleted, probably based on her lack of notability. Unfortunately, I am unable to track down confirmatory historical evidence of this. Could you please try to help me here. Her article presently is part of the small number listed under [Category:Articles needing link rot cleanup from October 2015], which I (and others) continually try to keep down to a minimum number. Thanks,

Somebody tried to delete Walnut Street (Philadelphia) via a move and then a redirect[edit]

The move was to Walnut Street, Philadelphia, which then redirected to Center City, Philadelphia. I reverted back to the un-redirected Walnut Street, Philadelphia but couldn't move it back to Walnut Street (Philadelphia). Obviously I'm in over my head. Can you get it back to the original? Any help appreciated. Smallbones(smalltalk) 02:34, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Same thing with "Temple Town" whcih should probably go back to the version https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cecil_B._Moore,_Philadelphia&direction=prev&oldid=664526585
There are no official neighborhoods in Philly, so I should check this, but "Cecil B. Moore" is a street not a neighborhood. Will get back on this. Smallbones(smalltalk) 02:50, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
I put all this at User talk:Nyttend – I'd let him do the moves, if they are all as clear as I think. But I thought I'd check with you – is "Cecil B. Moore" a neighborhood, or is it "Temple Town"? Please let him know what you think. Smallbones(smalltalk) 02:50, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject Women's sport[edit]

We appear to have a common interest, and that is to give unrated articles an importance rating. I'm doing that for Wikiproject New Zealand (ever so slowly), and you appear to do this for WikiProject Women's sport in a somewhat quicker way using AWB. I'm of course not sure what your exact decision making process is, but three Kiwi sports women on my watchlist who between them have collected a heap of Olympic gold medals have all received a 'low importance' rating by you. Given that they were obviously on top of the world at some point, that seems somewhat surprising. Would love to hear your thoughts on the likes of Georgina Evers-Swindell, Caroline Evers-Swindell, and Sarah Ulmer. It's not a criticism by any means, I'm mostly curious what your plan is. Schwede66 09:22, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for the examples. I will look into it and get back to you right here.--DThomsen8 (talk) 17:01, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
I raised the importance for the three New Zealand women you cite, and also created three redirect pages for them. I have worked on providing importance ratings for Wikipedia:WikiProject:New Zealand. For the ??? column, 6054-5972=82 rated, and for the Unassessed row, 5785-5712=72, almost all class=stub articles. This is progress towards your goal for New Zealand. --DThomsen8 (talk) 19:26, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Removal of "WikiProject class rating" headings on talk pages[edit]

Hi Dthomsen8. I was wondering: what's the rationale behind removing "WikiProject class rating" headings on talk pages, as you did here? Thanks. DH85868993 (talk) 10:08, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Mistake. I wanted to remove "This article was automatically assessed because at least one article was rated and this bot brought all the other ratings up to at least that level. BetacommandBot 23:05, 27 August 2007 (UTC)" at the same time. AWB is powerful, but sometimes tricky to achieve all that was intended.--DThomsen8 (talk) 13:15, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Cool. (I thought it was a bit odd that you removed the heading, but left the content). All good. Thanks. DH85868993 (talk) 20:36, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject College Basketball importance assessment[edit]

I notice that you have been going though and adding "low" to articles where the project importance is blank, such as this edit here to Marques Johnson. However, he was a national player of the year and consensus All-American, which should warrant a "high". I've also updated a few other similar edits of yours e.g. All-Americans that should probably be "mid". Can you explain what is the criteria you are currently using to assess the blank impotence articles? Thanks.—Bagumba (talk) 06:11, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

I am sure you know far more about basketball than I do. I have now done some corrections, but my contributions page does not show me what I need to find to make specific corrections except by going to the talk page and looking at the history.
Perhaps you can explain to me why Grant Hill has NBA importance=High, but college basketball and Olympics importance=low. There are many such articles, and I am sure you did nothing to cause that situation, but I may have caused a few of them.--DThomsen8 (talk) 16:58, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
The project banners on the talk page should have a link to the project's "importance" assessment criteria. For example, college basketball's is at Wikipedia:WikiProject_College_Basketball/Assessment#Importance_scale. There's nothing inherently wrong if one project deems one subject a different importance than another, is there? As for specific examples like Grant Hill, some assessments could be out of date, others may be wrong. Those can be judged on a per-case basis. If you are not familiar with a specific person, I suggest you leave the field blank, so other project members will know an assessment is still outstanding, instead of placing a value that is potentially wrong. Can you explain the goal of your AWB edits to remove "auto-inherit"? Thanks.—Bagumba (talk) 18:16, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
If I have provided class and importance ratings for most or all of a talk page, the auto= parameter done by automated processes is irrelevant. I have made a number of corrections to the male basketball players, especially where I made earlier updates but I am sure much more is needed. --DThomsen8 (talk) 19:38, 28 November 2015 (UTC)I now will stop doing AWB on basketball and women's sport talk pages.

um[edit]

could you provide some rationale why you have added NA to a set of nyungar project aticle talk pages, there must something I am missing why you would do that? JarrahTree 14:33, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

If an WikiProject Australia template has a parameter nys=yes but does not have nys-importance=NA, the categories of the talk page will say Unknown-importance Noongar articles. If nys-importance=NA is there, then the category will say NA-importance Noongar articles. Currently, only nys-importance=NA is a valid parameter. Other values, such as nys-importance=low are possible for task force parameters, but it is beyond my expertise to make that happen.--DThomsen8 (talk) 15:32, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
Ok, thank you for your well explained answer. cheers JarrahTree 22:44, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
Why do you say "only nys-importance=NA is a valid parameter"? NA means "non-article". It's rarely set explicitly, but is produced automatically for certain values of |class=, these include category, disambig, redir, template and a few others. If it's the talkpage of an article (not a redirect or dab page), setting a taskforce's importance to NA would normally mean that the taskforce is not interested in that article, and so it is better to remove |nys=yes and also |nys-importance= (whatever its value).
If you are setting NA because you don't know what to set |nys-importance= to, that is the wrong action. You should leave it blank, so that others familiar with that taskforce may set the importance appropriately. It is not an error for a page to be in an "unknown-importance" category, whatever the WikiProject or taskforce. People who set these parameters look in the "unknown-importance" category – they don't look in the "NA-importance" category. --Redrose64 (talk) 00:48, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
It's also pointless to set |class=category|importance=NA on the talk page of a category (as you did here) - or indeed on the talk page of anything that isn't an article - since it's detected automatically. Compare the page before and after your edit - there is absolutely no difference in either the WikiProject banner or in the categories. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 00:21, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Reply to Nyctemana[edit]

Hi, thanks for the message. Userfy seems to be mainly pushing the article back into non-public draft mode? There has been a lot of aggressive editorial bulldozing by James_Allison, which I guess is his job here. As a complete wiki novice I have limited understanding of all the wiki standards for article inclusion. The judgement concept of failing the notability of a community museum as perceived by someone on the other side of the world seems strange and unfair. It would be nice to think that using userfication, we could develop the article to meet the standards of wikis editors. But some of the more vocal critics of this article seem to have already made up their minds. The museum has grown through Oceania artefact donations for more than 50 years, and the article has the potential to grow through contribution also. If there is hope that this article, which is about a cultural resource very important to us, can continue somehow, then I would like to work towards that. Thanks. Re: Proapteryx[edit]

Hi, no problem, after all improvements here also allow me make editions in the Spanish versions. Regarding to Westergaardodina, the form taxa that you refer is about taxa that are known only by its general morphology, but not by its true biological affinities (see more here: Form classification), so is in question if this genus name refers to a traditional taxonomic taxon or some parataxon. I guess that the article not needs to be rewritten, what it needs is simply more information, more context. For example, what is a paraconodont? where has been found the fossils of this genus? why is important? etc. --Rextron (talk) 02:58, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

Help?[edit]

Thanks for the edits on The Valley Report and Dave Weasel both articles are up for deletion by someone angry about it. I left replies but do not know the proper way to do it. Could you weigh in on it? Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yeahimadethis (talkcontribs) 20:00, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Replied on your talk page.--DThomsen8 (talk) 20:12, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Thanks[edit]

Thank you for your input. I'm not sure how to reply so I'm doing it here if it's ok. The person requesting The Valley Report for deletion cited a personal opinion on the nobility of the subject, despite several sources and examples. According to Alexa.com it is significantly more popular than the majority of other satire websites on Wikipedia. It's editor Dave Weasel Has several sources and examples of independent and reliable press sources, headlining performances as a comedian, his allmusic.com page, (which was a requirement for nobility) his verified Spotify artist page and verified Facebook comedian page. All prove nobility so if my format is incorrect that should be addressed, not the whole article be deleted. Or am I wrong? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yeahimadethis (talkcontribs) 20:26, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Thank You for your help[edit]

We have recently worked together (sort of) in the Ambai Islands article and I would just like to say thank you for your hard work. Thanks to your work the article passed from a rather unintelligible stub to a rather decent start-class. Thank you! I did re-add the ref improve because I still consider that some sections could really do with more in-line citations. Thank you and I look forward to working together in the future.Jtrrs0 (talk) 02:23, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Copyeditors progress.png

Hello everyone, welcome to the June 2016 GOCE newsletter. It's been a few months since we sent one out; we hope y'all haven't forgotten about the Guild! Your coordinators have been busy behind the scenes as usual, though real life has a habit of reducing our personal wiki-time. The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes!

May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography.

Coordinator elections: It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. Voting takes place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. If you'd like to assist behind the scenes, please consider stepping forward; self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; remember it's your Guild, and it doesn't run itself!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Miniapolis and Baffle gab1978.

Copyeditors progress.png

Hello everyone, and welcome to the July 2016 GOCE newsletter.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 12 through 18 June; the themes were video games and Asian geography. Of the 18 editors who signed up, 11 removed 47 articles from the backlog. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

Coordinator elections: The second tranche of Guild coordinators for 2016, who will serve a six-month term until 23:59 UTC on 31 December, have been elected. Jonesey95 remains as your drama-free Lead Coordinator, and Corinne and Tdslk are your new assistant coordinators. For her long service to the Guild, Miniapolis has been enrolled in the GOCE Hall of Fame. Thanks to everyone who voted in the election; our next scheduled one occurs in December 2016. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; self-nominations are welcome and encouraged.

July Drive: Our month-long July Copy Editing Backlog Elimination Drive is now underway. Our aim is to remove articles tagged for copy-edit in April, May and June 2015, and to complete all requests on the GOCE Requests page from June 2016. The drive ends at 23:59 on 31 July 2016 (UTC).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdlsk.

Project languages importance[edit]

Thanks for updating some of the language talk-pages. I noticed your activities on some Ethiopian language pages I watch. You have classified some of these language as low importance. Please be advised that all language pages, regardless of the number of speakers, are classified as high with respect to the Wiki Project languages. It would be great if you could fix that for the languages where you have changed it to low. Best wishes, Landroving Linguist (talk) 11:27, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for the information. Please tell me what "regardless of the number of speakers" means for my updates. If a language is currently spoken, then "high" is the importance. What about long extinct languages, like Linear A or recently extinct? All currently spoken dialects, like Aachen dialect? What about constructed languages, like Nal Bino? Please clarify for me.--DThomsen8 (talk) 17:24, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

Cross-listing WP:WikiProject New York City articles in WP:WikiProject New York[edit]

In this series of edits: [6], [7], [8], you added Ivana Trump, Melania Trump, and Elizabeth Christ Trump to WP:WikiProject New York. These people really have no connection to the state other than they reside in Manhattan. It's really counterproductive to cross-list every NYC article into the state WikiProject for two reasons: 1) It would turn WP:WikiProject New York into WP:WikiProject New York City and 2) WP:WikiProject New York editors already have to wade through a lot of WP:WikiProject New York City just to edit ones that really have a state-wide scope or are upstate. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 10:46, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

Hello. I've revamped the contest page into this, based on the new British model. Long term goal, but I've added entries since the beginning of July to give it some initial life. Please add anything you've done then this then too! I hope it proves productive long term. The contests are still planned, but will be more tools towards increasing bulk output in overall goal. It's a permanent goal now, and open! I would be grateful if you could keep a record of all your articles you do there, as I really think seeing the combined efforts will encourage others to create more content too! Please spread the word to the others, cheers!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:22, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

Your reassessment of Phenomenon[edit]

Hello, in this edit, you assert NOT class=Disambig. Even though it's not formatted as a disambiguation page, it still lays out several different meanings of phenomenon and links to single-topic articles that discuss those meanings. So if you really found it objectionable, you probably should have reformatted Phenomenon per MOS:DAB instead of decreeing that it's a single topic. "The emperor has no clothes." See also Talk:Phenomenon/Archives/2013#Uses_of_.22Phenomenon.22 -- DanielPenfield (talk) 06:52, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

Look at Phenomena (disambiguation) and Phenomenal (disambiguation), which are Disambig and I will look at the URLs you have cited for me.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 15:03, 17 September 2016 (UTC)
Phenomenal (disambiguation) is completely irrelevant. Instead of pretending that Phenomenon is somehow not disambiguating scientific, mechanical, "gem", "group and social", and "popular usage" different meanings for the same term, here are some more appropriate options:
Again, pretending Phenomenon isn't disambiguating at least six different meanings isn't helpful. "The emperor has no clothes." -- DanielPenfield (talk) 16:57, 17 September 2016 (UTC)
Phenomenon is fairly clearly a WP:DABTOPIC vice a true WP:DAB, which per DABTOPIC should be an article describing it, and not a disambiguation page. This should not be classified as a disambig. --Izno (talk) 15:38, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for that explanation, Izno. Is class=C satisfactory?

Prize[edit]

Hi. I'm planning on making a Wiki grant proposal for Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge/The Africa Destubathon this week. Would you still be interested in helping towards the prize fund? If so something like $200 could go towards whoever does the most geography and wildlife destubs during it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:38, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Yes, $200 towards a prize for African women stubs. Mimi Hafida is an example, and I am sure more will be added by Women in Red. Tell me about how to contribute.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 15:02, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
What would be great on this, is if we have an open prize and the most prolific editors can choose to donate that to an African WikiProject which wants books. That can then be used to distribute books to prolific editors who participate in the contest and want books to help them with women articles etc! Call it a Jury's prize or something. You can decide after the contest who you want to buy books for.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:29, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi, are you still up for a prize towards this Africa Destubathon then? I'm hoping to get it underway in October. I can certainly give a prize for most women destubs.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:31, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Yes, how do I provide the money?--Dthomsen8 (talk) 12:35, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
$200 Amazon vouchers say. If you have an account you can purchase an e-gift voucher on there. Whoever wins it you can then send it to them via email. We'll work out a way to use it most effectively. I'm hoping to get it off and running in October.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:12, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Fixed Nitrogen Research Laboratory[edit]

Noodling around in Commons I found pictures of this lab but not much information. Apparently it was somewhere in DC and apparently the Chemical Heritage Foundation had more information but I haven't been able to find it. Probably not worth an article but it deserves at least a paragraph in the history of fixation. Any hints? Jim.henderson (talk) 16:17, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

Jim: I have asked User talk:Mary Mark Ockerbloom, resident Wikipedian at CHF to contact you.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 21:39, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
Hi @Jim.henderson:, I think the Fixed Nitrogen Research Laboratory would make a nice article! Most of what we have in the CHF collection is images, but there are at least some published sources that I can suggest as useful starting points. Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 00:14, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
Splendid. Actually the contemporary C&ME report is the valuable one; the one I can access that tells me where and what. With that, I intend to expand the miserably written McKinley Building article with a citation-rich paragraph; maybe a section. I was mostly looking for a home for the topic, not intending to do a full-blown article. I know only a little chemistry and in WP do more editing of architecture, a subject in which I am equally ignorant but more bold. That's why I didn't want to put it in the Nitrogen fixation article and wondered whether it belonged in the Haber process article. The splendid reference tells me it does not, so this building will be the home of the topic unless someone more confident in industrial chemistry takes it out of my hands. Thanks, @Mary Mark Ockerbloom: Jim.henderson (talk) 01:07, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Women articles[edit]

Hi. I was wondering if you could buy this to give as a prize to whoever creates the most women bios for the Africa contest? It's usually very expensive but very lucky for it to be only 80 cents. A few books prizes on this and I think we could get more articles in different areas. I went to buy the Africa book myself but I'd have to pay £21 for them to send it to the UK!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:11, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

I'll ask on the contets talk page if anybody wants it. Can you sort out giving the $200 to Miyagawa for most women entries then, as I believe you said you'd give 200 for the women top prize. He'll want part cash I think to allow him to buy a new subscription for British Library. That can be sent via paypal, assuming you've both got paypal accounts.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:39, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

Writing Magnifying.PNG

Copyeditors progress.png

Hello everyone, and welcome to the December 2016 GOCE newsletter. We had an October newsletter all set to go, but it looks like we never pushed the button to deliver it, so this one contains a few months of updates. We have been busy and successful!

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: Nominations are open for election of Coordinators for the first half of 2017. Please visit the election page to nominate yourself or another editor, and then return after December 15 to vote. Thanks for participating!

September Drive: The September drive was fruitful. We set out to remove July through October 2015 from our backlog (an ambitious 269 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of oldest articles to just 83. We reduced our overall backlog by 97 articles, even with new copyedit tags being added to articles every day. We also handled 75% of the remaining Requests from August 2016. Overall, 19 editors recorded copy edits to 233 articles (over 378,000 words).

October Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 October; the theme was Requests, since the backlog was getting a bit long. Of the 16 editors who signed up, 10 editors completed 29 requests. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

November Drive: The November drive was a record-breaker! We set out to remove September through December 2015 from our backlog (239 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of old articles to just 66, eliminating the two oldest months! We reduced our overall backlog by 523 articles, to a new record low of 1,414 articles, even with new tags being added to articles every day, which means we removed copy-editing tags from over 800 articles. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from October 2016. Officially, 14 editors recorded copy edits to 200 articles (over 312,000 words), but over 600 articles, usually quick fixes and short articles, were not recorded on the drive page.

Housekeeping note: we do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your Watchlist.

Redlinked WikiProjects[edit]

It seems like every week I have to clean up the mess that you leave when adding WikiProject templates to talk pages. Why is it that you save pages with redlinks? A simple WP:PREVIEW will show you whether it's valid or not. Consider this revert: there's a redlink, in between the two valid templates. Don't you care? --Redrose64 (talk) 22:53, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

Not wishing to engage in an edit war, I have never recalled your edits until today. When I see an error on a talk page, such as class=startub, I fix it. Until tonight, I did not know why you were reverting my updates. I corrected the error on the talk page, and explained my edit. You could have left me a message, or fixed my mistakes, but only now have you explained your actions. I will be more careful in the future, as you request now. --Dthomsen8 (talk) 00:54, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
I have done: for instance, this post from almost a year ago, which you deleted without replying. The problem goes back at least as far as May 2015. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:13, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
Please examine these thirteen edits.
Ten of them - those where the page size was increased by 49 or more characters - added a redlinked template to the page, so I conclude that you are continuing to ignore my advice to WP:PREVIEW your edits. I see that you are using WP:AWB: you are therefore bound by the AWB rules of use, which include Rule 1 "You are responsible for every edit made. Do not sacrifice quality for speed and review all changes before saving."
Of the other three, two of them (those concerning Talk:Littoral Rainforests of New South Wales and Talk:Mars, New South Wales) did nothing but alter |NSW=y or |nsw=y to |nsw=yes with zero effect on the page, and so were in violation of Rule 4 "Do not make insignificant or inconsequential edits. An edit that has no noticeable effect on the rendered page is generally considered an insignificant edit."
Only one of those thirteen edits (that to Talk:Mickibri, New South Wales) was valid and error-free. Please be more careful in future. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:05, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
Please explain why you left redlinks after these edits and this one; also, why you think that |class=stub is appropriate for a category page. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 00:12, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Hat trick[edit]

Hi, Dave. I love my "Wikipedia Editor" cap, especially for the envy it inspires. I'm wondering if my WP:WMNYC local chapter should buy a bunch of similar ones but with our name on it. Where did you get it? Jim.henderson (talk) 20:57, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

I had two batches made at different times, some khaki (and with a jacket, front and back) and later for London, blue caps. I have been giving them out to serious editors. Any place that does embroidering can make them, and of course in quantity they are cheaper. Shop around, but be quick, the 15th is near. It should say "Wikipedia editor" in the right font.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 22:26, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Outro (literary)[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article Outro (literary) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

this is a "definition" of the word and is therefore against policy

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.  Paine Ellsworth  u/c 07:55, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

I have stated my objection to deletion of this article. I will try to improve the article tonight, and delete the PRODat that time.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 20:49, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

John Bull[edit]

Heya! I noticed you had PA history next to your name on the Wikiproject Pennsylvania page.

I recently made a new page for John_Bull_(general), and it could use some help from someone with more wikipedia experience than me. Anything you can do for it will be appreciated.

Thanks! Acronach —Preceding undated comment added 16:15, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

I made a few changes in your article. It is a good start, but rather than do more, I want you to look at some examples.
I will check again tomorrow.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 03:36, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

Cross-listing WP:WikiProject Companies articles into WP:WikiProject Business[edit]

Please do not cross-list companies articles into WikiProject Business. If you continue to do that, WikiProject Business will consist of 90% company articles. Editors who are interested in finding company articles to work on can find them quite easily in WP:WikiProject Companies. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 01:58, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

You are quite right, and I will be careful with that. --Dthomsen8 (talk) 18:25, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

Removing businesspeople from WP:WikiProject Business[edit]

Please do not remove businesspeople from WP:WikiProject Business. Businesspeople are not companies. If you are not a member of WP:WikiProject Business, you should stop assessing articles NOW. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 17:12, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

You are quite right, and I will be careful with that. --Dthomsen8 (talk) 18:24, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

February 2016[edit]

I'm getting seriously fed up with cleaning up your bad edits like this, so I'm making it formal: Information icon Hello. This is a message to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions, such as the edit you made to Talk:WheatonArts, did not appear constructive and has been reverted. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with our policies and guidelines. You can find information about these at our welcome page which also provides further information about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. If you only meant to make test edits, please use the sandbox for that. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you may leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:11, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

Just in case you didn't get the messages that are sent automatically through the notifications system, I have found no less than twelve of your bad edits this week, in all cases you left a redlinked template on a page which previously had no redlinked templates. Eight of these redlinks were added to the page by you: Talk:Allen Family Foods; Talk:AmeriServ Financial; Talk:Argosy Gaming Company; Talk:Caples Jefferson Architects; Talk:China Railway Engineering Corporation; Talk:Erie to Pittsburgh Trail; Talk:Storm Financial; Talk:WheatonArts. The other four were perfectly valid until you came along and altered them to something invalid: Talk:Ahli Bank Qatar; Talk:Aichi Bank; Talk:Aveve; Talk:BH Mobile.

I notice that the edit summaries for these all state "clean up" - it is not a "clean up" if you leave the pages in a worse state than they had previously been in. They also all show "using AWB" - if you are not aware of the AWB rules of use, I am now drawing your attention to them, and to rule 1 in particular: "You are responsible for every edit made. Do not sacrifice quality for speed, and review all changes before saving." If you continue to ignore this rule, and leave more redlinks like those that you have been leaving, take note that I already have sufficient grounds to request that the AWB right be withdrawn from you. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:20, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

mangling tags[edit]

that was a bad idea. Frietjes (talk) 22:53, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

@Frietjes: I've called out Dthomsen8 on this before. They simply do not care, so, a few days ago I posted the thread immediately above. As it was an AWB edit, I think we're now in a position where removal of access to AWB is justified. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:18, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
Redrose64, agreed. I fixed about a dozen more that were simply dumb edits (e.g., adding duplicate class parameters, etc). Frietjes (talk) 23:20, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

OK, then: Dthomsen8, I'm informing you that your AWB access has been revoked for persistently ignoring the AWB Rules of Use. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:27, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

4th Marine Division[edit]

Your page says you are a master editor and I need your help. One of the bare URLs you fixed on the 4th Marine Division Article was from me. However, the user that put that tag there did that because of me. I made the mistake of telling them that the: Invasion of Iwo Jima and the Battle of Iwo Jima, used back to back is reduntant for the USS Mifflin. That got me a complaint with Wikipedia that I was a sock puppit. Which was dismissed. They checked my edits and un did one for the Seabees and put tags on the 4th Marine Division and the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133 articles, But, yesterday I found that they had put 7 hidden categories on 133 in addition. Will you tell me what I need to know. This user seems to use the rules of Wikipedia to be vindictive. My reason for even being on Wikipedia was the inaccuate history posted for 133. Anything else I made an edit on was something that was linked to that article. I would very much apprrecciated your input. I had also asked this of another editor but you were on the 4th's page because of me and I wanted to apologize for the trouble. Guild of Copy Editors February 2017 News[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors February 2017 News
Writing Magnifying.PNG

Copyeditors progress.png

Hello everyone, and welcome to the February 2017 GOCE newsletter. The Guild has been busy since the last time your coordinators sent out a newsletter!

December blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 December; the themes were Requests and eliminating the November 2015 backlog. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine editors completed 29 articles. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all who took part.

January drive: The January drive was a great success. We set out to remove December 2015 and January and February 2016 from our backlog (195 articles), and by 22 January we had cleared those and had to add a third month (March 2016). At the end of the month we had almost cleared out that last month as well, for a total of 180 old articles removed from the backlog! We reduced our overall backlog by 337 articles, to a low of 1,465 articles, our second-lowest month-end total ever. We also handled all of the remaining requests from December 2016. Officially, 19 editors recorded 337 copy edits (over 679,000 words).

February blitz: The one-week February blitz, focusing on the remaining March 2016 backlog and January 2017 requests, ran from 12 to 18 February. Seven editors reduced the total in those two backlog segments from 32 to 10 articles, leaving us in good shape going in to the March drive.

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 stepped aside as lead coordinator, remaining as coordinator and allowing Miniapolis to be the lead, and Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators. Thanks to all who participated!

Speaking of coordinators, congratulations to Jonesey95 on their well-deserved induction into the Guild of Copy Editors Hall of Fame. The plaque reads: "For dedicated service as lead coordinator (2014, 1 July – 31 December 2015 and all of 2016) and coordinator (1 January – 30 June 2015 and 1 January – 30 June 2017); exceptional template-creation work (considerably streamlining project administration), and their emphasis on keeping the GOCE a drama-free zone."

Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Miniapolis, Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdslk.

To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

User:Martincbsmith[edit]

Hi Dthomsen. I'm not sure why you redirected User:Martincbsmith to Martin Smith (academic). Even if they are one and the same person, the article was created more tha 10 years ago, and it didn't start out as a user space draft. Smith is free to add a COI declaration or other information to the user page if he wants, but a cross namespace redirect to the article does not seem to be needed here. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:38, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

You are quite right.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 04:51, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Request for help[edit]

I see that in the past you have helped with the Ellis Paul article. I am trying to resolve a dispute regarding the article and am hoping you will lend support on the Talk:Ellis Paul page by offering a Third Party Opinion. In a nutshell, another editor removed a sound sample box that has been part of the article for 10 years. I would like to have a consensus to be able to add the sound sample back. I would appreciate your support. Thank you for your time and consideration. Kmzundel (talk) 12:01, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Coords[edit]

Hallo, I've noticed you helpfully adding coordinates to quite a few articles on my watch list, as here: thanks. A couple of points:

  1. Precision - please have a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Geographical_coordinates#Precision_guidelines. For an area like a parish I think 2 or 3 decimal places is appropriate: the precision you give is specific to about 8cm.
  2. Region code: if you add "region:GB" it means that someone clicking on the coords gets offered a local set of maps including Ordnance Survey mapping, which is very helpful
  3. Type code: I think "type:city" is probably the appropriate one to use for a parish, which is a 4th-level admin unit so doesn't fit into any of the other categories.

These improvements make the coordinates even more useful for readers. Thanks. PamD 07:10, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for the suggestions. I am afraid I have been going for volume, rather than precision. --Dthomsen8 (talk) 12:37, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
