John Roy "Jon" Anderson (born 25 October 1944) is an English musician, singer and songwriter best known as the co-founder and former lead vocalist in the progressive rock band Yes and his solo career, for which he has collaborated with numerous artists.
Anderson was born John Roy Anderson in the town of Accrington in Lancashire, in north west England. His father Albert was from Scotland and his mother Kathleen was of Irish ancestry. Anderson dropped the "h" from his first name in 1970. Anderson attended St. John's Infants School in Accrington. There he made a tentative start to a musical career, playing the washboard in Little John's Skiffle Group who performed songs by Lonnie Donegan, among others. After leaving school at the age of fifteen, Anderson landed a series of jobs including farm hand, lorry driver, and a milkman. He tried to pursue a football career at Accrington Stanley F.C., but at 5 feet 5 inches (1.65 m) tall he was turned down because of his frail constitution. He remains a fan of the club.
The One O’Clock Lab Band for 68 years has been the premier ensemble of the Jazz Studies Division at the University of North Texas College of Music in Denton. The band has performed and toured in Australia, Canada, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, Thailand, and The Netherlands. Since the 1970s, the band’s albums have received six Grammy nominations, including two for Lab 2009. Steve Wiest, a three-time Grammy-nominated composer-arranger-director and Associate Professor of Music, directed the O'Clock Lab Band from 2008 through the summer of 2014.Jay Saunders, a veteran of the Stan Kenton Orchestra, has been interim director since 2014. The One O’Clock is the highest of nine peer lab bands at the college, each named for its hour of rehearsal and each a standard 19-piece big band instrumentation — five saxophones, five trombones, five trumpets, piano, guitar, bass, and drums. The One O’Clock evolved from an extracurricular stage band founded in 1927 into a curricular laboratory dance band in 1947, when North Texas launched the first jazz degree program in the world. For the next 20 years — until 1967 — North Texas was the only US university that offered a degree in jazz studies.
Time and a Word is the second studio album from the progressive rock band Yes, released in July 1970 on Atlantic Records. Following the commercial failure of their first album, Yes, the group continued to display their early music direction of performing original material with rearranged cover versions of songs by pop, jazz, and funk artists. Time and a Word includes songs with orchestral arrangements.
Time and a Word became the group's first release to enter the UK chart with a peak of No. 45. It failed to chart in the US and received some mixed reviews from critics. During their UK tour in April 1970, guitarist Peter Banks was fired from the group. By the time of the album's release, he was replaced by Steve Howe who is photographed with the group on the North American issue. In 2003, the album was remastered with several previously unreleased tracks.
Jon Anderson's decision to use a live orchestra on most of the album's songs (as he reported in the Yesyears video) put him very much at odds with Peter Banks. Tensions within the band increased, and just after the album's recording was completed in early 1970, Banks was asked to leave. Steve Howe would join the line-up that March, replacing Banks. The album includes two songs Anderson wrote with David Foster, a former bandmate in The Warriors.

Yesterday there was so many things I was never told Now that I'm startin' to learn I feel I'm growing old 'Cause yesterday's got nothin' for me Old pictures that I'll always see Time just fades the pages in my book of memories Prayers in my pocket And no hand in destiny I'll keep on movin' along With no time to plant my feet 'Cause yesterday's got nothin' for me Old pictures that I'll always see Some things could be better If we'd all just let them be Yesterday's got nothin' for me Yesterday's got nothin' for me Got nothin' for me Yesterday there was so many things I was never shown Suddenly this time I found I'm on the streets and I'm all alone Yesterday's got nothin' for me Old pictures that I'll always see I ain't got time to reminisce old novelties Yesterday's got nothin' for me...
