If ever two lollies were made for a love match, it would be chocolately Chicos and Strawberries & Cream.

Well lolly lovers, that vision is about to become a reality, with confectionary company Allen's set to unleash its new Choc & Cream line in a matter of weeks.

The creation – a chewy blob of chocolate on a soft vanilla base - is the result of a national ballot to find a new national candy.

Over two weeks in January, more than 20,000 sweet-tooths voted on three reworked classics: Funny Teeth (candy-coloured versions of the original); Ginger Cats (think spicy ginger-flavoured Black Cats in a shade of yellow); and the eventual champion Choc & Cream.

The winner captured 46 per cent of the total vote, with Funny Teeth following not far behind (40 per cent). Ginger Cats divided punters but ultimately failed to win over the masses, languishing at the bottom of the ballot at 14 per cent.

The announcement was mostly greeted with relief on social media. "Phew … wouldn't want to live in a world that would have voted for the Ginger Cat," wrote Brett Markwell on Facebook.

"As if either of the other options could have won ... Ginger Cats?" posted Shannon McGeorge.

Others weren't so pleased. "That is sooooooo sad. I'd never buy them. Those ginger ones would have been da bomb. Robbed again," wrote Cath Lawson.

Last year's victor – Peaches & Cream – is still enjoying success, with its run being extended indefinitely.

Allen's Choc & Cream will be on sale in Woolworths from late March.
