Mark Furner to replace Stirling Hinchliffe in cabinet

Former Queensland Senator Mark Furner will replace fallen Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe in the the Palaszczuk government's cabinet.

The Member for Ferny Grove won a reportedly close vote over Logan MP Linus Power on Wednesday night.

Cabinet reshuffle will be 'minor'

A spokesman for the Premier confirmed Mr Furner's elevation but said he was not likely to be endorsed by caucus until Friday.

Mr Furner, a member of Labor Forum after previously being part of the Old Guard, was being mentioned as a possible replacement earlier this week in the wake of Mr Hinchliffe's resignation.

The Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee chair, is only a first-term state MP but served six years as a senator until 2013.

The government was not revealing who would be handed the Transport portfolio vacated by Mr Hinchliffe in the wake of the Queensland Rail timetable debacle.

The long-awaited Strachan Report into driver shortage that caused hundreds of train cancellations and saw a stripped down timetable introduced to salvage reliability was critical of the organisation but did not make findings against the minister.
