The Iraqi Army is the ground force component of the armed forces of the Republic of Iraq, having been active in various incarnations throughout the 20th century and 21st century.
The Iraqi Army in its modern form was first created by the United Kingdom during the inter-war period of de facto British control of Mandatory Iraq. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Iraqi Army was rebuilt along American lines with enormous amounts of U.S. military assistance at every level. Because of the Iraqi insurgency that began shortly after the invasion, the Iraqi Army was designed to initially be a counter-insurgency force. With the US withdrawal in December 2011, Iraqi forces have assumed full responsibility for security. A New York Times article suggested that, between 2004 and 2014, the USA had provided the Iraqi Army with $25billion in training and equipment in addition to an even larger sum from the Iraqi treasury.
The threat of war with newly forming Republic of Turkey, which claimed the Ottoman vilayet of Mosul as part of their country, led the British to form the Iraqi Army on 6 January 1921. The Mussa Al-Kadhum Brigade consisted of ex-Iraqi-Ottoman officers, whose barracks were located in Kadhimyah. The United Kingdom provided support and training to the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi Air Force through a small military mission based in Baghdad. Iraqi Army Day celebrates the soldiers that fight for Iraq.

Mosul (/moʊˈsuːl/; Arabic: الموصل – al-Mawṣil (local pronunciation: el-Mōṣul); Syriac: ܢܝܢܘܐ – Nînwe; Kurdish: مووسڵ – Mûsil) is a city of normally about two and a half million people (2014 est.) in northern Iraq, illegally occupied since 10 June 2014 by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Mosul is completely ruled by the Islamic State terror group headquartered in Al-Raqqah, Syria. The legitimate government of Iraq stopped paying salaries soon after the city was overrun by militants. Located some 400 km (250 mi) north of Baghdad, the original city stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has grown to encompass substantial areas on both the "Left Coast" (east side) and the "Right Coast" (west side) as the two banks are described in the local language.

Heavy clashes are underway in the Iraqi city of Mosul as Daesh terrorists seek to slow army’s advance in eastern parts of the city. The Takfiri terrorists tried to stop troops with mortars and car bombs in clashes that dragged into the night. Snipers traded fire from rooftops. Iraqi forces have already taken control of at least six neighborhoods of Mosul. Another army unit advanced in the north near the western bank of the Tigris River, reaching an area just four kilometers from Mosul Airport. On another front, Iraqi forces attacked Daesh positions in the town of Hamam al-Alil which lies along the Tigris River about 15 kilometers south of Mosul. (15 Dec 2016) The Iraqi army patrolled the streets of eastern Mosul on Thursday amid fears that an attack in the liberated areas of the city by Islamic State group was imminent. Iraqi operations in the city have slowed down in recent days partly because of bad weather, and it's believed the Islamic State group are more likely to launch counter-attacks in these conditions. Cloudy skies make it more difficult for aircraft to identify and hit targets on the ground. There were at least two suicide attacks on Wednesday in areas that had already been taken by the army. Battlefield Iraq 2015 Heavy Clashes And Fighting Between Insurgents And Iraqi Army In The Anbar
A year after the Islamic State's lightning conquest of Iraq's second-largest city of Mosul, the poorly-trained and equipped Kurdish peshmerga forces are the international coalition's only reliable boots on the ground in northern Iraq. The Pentagon's hopes of recapturing the city by spring 2015 have been dashed by the military failures of the Iraqi Army further south, leaving the peshmerga to defend a 600-mile long frontline almost encircling Mosul, fending off constant Islamic State (IS) assaults with insufficient supplies of ammunition and modern weapons. For one month, VICE News embedded with the peshmerga fighters on the Mosul frontline, gaining an insight into the coalition's faltering war against IS through the eyes of the Kurdish volunteers bearing the brunt of the fighting. The reason we're all disfigured
I will say it again
The reason we're all disappointed
With innocence lost
You're alone
You can feel the resentment
Burning a pathway
Straight to your heart
I saw kingdom come
Maybe your life is wonderful
I wish you well
Please understand I won't change you
So grant me the same
I know this
There's a plain white horizon
I want it so badly
It seems after all
That you will be done
And it's done
Reaching on out
And it's done
We are all defenceless now
On your own you left somehow
With these broken bones
These broken bones
But I am one with these chains
Come around and I regain
With my broken bones
My broken bones
The reason we're all disfigured
I will say it again
The reason we're all disappointed
With innocence lost
You're alone
You can feel the resentment
Burning a pathway
Straight to your heart
