Murder Uncovered reveals more possible victims of David and Catherine Birnie

Australia's worst serial killer couple, David and Catherine Birnie, may be responsible for at least two more murders than the four they confessed to, according to a new television show.

Two more women, Cheryl Renwick and Barbara Weston, were named as potential victims of the couple, by Channel Seven's Murder Uncovered.

The Birnies raped, stabbed, strangled and clubbed to death four victims in their Willagee house, in Perth's southern suburbs, in 1986.

They were caught when a fifth intended victim escaped, after they abducted her at knifepoint.

The escapee, Kate Moir, was interviewed by the program, saying police at first failed to believe her story when she turned up begging for help.

Ms Moir, then just 17, was taken to the small suburban Palmyra police station, where she was to be interviewed by the only woman on duty that day, a 22-year-old graduate fresh from the police academy.

The policewoman confirmed to the program that Ms Moir was dismissed as unreliable, with superiors telling her not to file a report.

"I was told that it was a bizarre story and to just ditch her up for a false report," Laura Hancock said. "And I'll never forget those words, that is verbatim, I have lived those words for thirty years."

Instead, Ms Moir was able to give enough detail, including the couple's address and phone number, for police to arrest them and uncover buried human remains.

The program interviewed the daughter of Cheryl Renwick, who it named for the first time as a victim of the Birnies.

The Perth single mother of two vanished at the age of 33 in May 1986 after being stalked by an unknown couple.

Daughter Michelle Renwick and a friend described seeing a woman who looked like Catherine Birnie come to the house on several occasions.

She said that police recovered some of her mother's possessions when looking for evidence to prosecute the Birnies.

However, the couple were never charged with her murder.

The second newly-named potential victim, Barbara Weston, was last seen leaving a Perth tavern on June 27, 1986.

Her remains were later found buried, with the killer having removed her jewellery and other items and placed them beside the body. This was one of the Birnies' trademarks.

The program also names a seventh possible murder victim of David Birnie, 12-year-old Lisa Mott, who was last seen getting into a yellow panel van in the West Australian town of Collie on October 9, 1980.

David Birnie had worked in the area and was said to have owned a similar vehicle at the time.

However, the program interviewed his first wife, who gave him an alibi for the day that would have made his involvement in the murder impossible.

Another woman described being stalked by David Birnie and how she now believes she was to be the couples first victim.

In October 1985, Birnie repeatedly harassed Audrey Schofield, the receptionist in a small real estate agency near where the Birnies lived.

"He came back every day for at least a week. He was making suggestions like 'I only like brunettes with brown eyes'," Ms Schofield said. "As soon as I was alone he came in."

She said she eventually got rid of him when her husband confronted him.
