'It's an unfair and unwinnable game': Lena Dunham defends Taylor Swift's dating history as she brands criticism as sexist

She's had more than her share of famous lovers.

And while Taylor Swift's gallery of hunky exes has left many jealous it has also elicited jeers for the brevity of her romances.

But her BFF Lena Dunham came to the pop singer's rescue as she appeared on the Howard Stern show on Monday.

The Girls creator defended Taylor's dating habits, explaining: 'I think that young woman…it's so hard. 

'I think about the relationships that I had in my early twenties and if they had been public, it would've been a disaster,' she continued.

'And also, I mean, not to repeat age-old feminist points, but it's like you know, any male actor her age who's going out and dating is applauded and to just have a perfectly normal amount of romantic partners but to be held to impossibly high standards by the press, like it's just an unfair and unwinnable game.'

Taylor's most recent romance included a fling with Tom Hiddleston that lasted a mere few months.

Prior to that it was perhaps one of her longer and more creatively fruitful dalliances - Calvin Harris.

Other heartthrobs on her list of former Lotharios include, John Mayer (November 2009 - February 2010), Jake Gyllenhaal (October 2010 - December 2010), Conor Kennedy (July 2012 - October 2012), and Harry Styles (December 2012 - January 2013).

Lena also took some time to praise one of her former interns on the show - Malia Obama - in the same interview.

'She's an angel,' said Dunham, who up until that point had never officially acknowledged the fact that the former first daughter worked on set.

When asked how she wound up working as an intern for the show, Dunham said: 'She was interested and she was interning at HBO and they thought what if she comes a couple days a week to the set of girls.'

She went on to say that because she was just 16 at the time time there were limits to what Malia could do on set, and what she could see.

'We couldn't do graphic sex scenes around her,' said Jenni Konner, the executive producer of the show who was interviewed alongside Dunham on Monday.
