Mareeba farmer just wants a new ute after $15 million lottery win

A farmer from far north Queensland who won a $15 million Oz Lotto jackpot on Tuesday night said he will use some of the money to finally buy his dream ute.

The Mareeba farmer had gone home for his lunch break when he found out the news - Golden Casket had been trying to ring him all morning, but he had been out working in his paddock.

In comments provided by Tatts Group, the man said he was in disbelief when he found out.

"Are you serious? Jesus! I'm shocked actually, I just can't believe it. I never thought this would happen to me," he said in reaction to the news.

"When I heard there was a winner in Mareeba, I was going to go check my ticket but I thought nah it's impossible that it's me. I'd never win!"

The man, who doesn't wish to be identified, said he would probably buy his family a house and maybe take them on a holiday, but also buy his dream car.

"We might go for a little cruise on holiday or something like that," he said.

"I really get into my cars too, so now I can buy the ute I always dreamt of."

Despite his windfall, the farmer who is in his 50s said he doesn't plan to stop working.

"I'm a hard worker so I won't retire because you got to keep doing something otherwise you go mad," he said.

The man bought his winning ticket from Piagno's News in Mareeba, making his ticket the sixth division one winner sold at that newsagency.

The first was a $187,000 win in July 2003, then a $1.2 million win in July 2006, a $1 million win in July 2010, and then a $5 million win and a $723,000 win both in February 2011.

Piagno's News owners Kirrily and Sheldon Mulla said the $15 million win was a "big deal" for the small town.

"I got tears of joy running down my face right now and I didn't even win it," Mrs Mulla said.

"My customers must think I'm pathetic but I'm just so excited and happy for our winning customer."

Although we are not even two months in, it's been a lucky year for Queenslanders and lottery jackpots.

In January, a group of 21 Queensland Department of Education workers won a $55 million Powerball jackpot.

Each syndicate member - the group ranged in age between 23 and 60 - got to take home $2.62 million each.
