She's an acclaimed actress of screen and stage, nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress in Fences.

But despite odds favouring Viola Davis, the 51-year-old confessed she doesn't to beat fellow academy award nominee Nicole Kidman to the statue.

During an interview with The Project on Wednesday, the How To Get Away With Murder star joked that she 'didn't want to piss Nicole Kidman off' by winning the award and missing out on an invitation to her swanky Sydney pad.

The America actress was promoting her new movie when the interviewer quipped that Viola would be up against Australian golden girl Nicole Kidman, who was also Oscar nominated for her role in Lion.

Viola then confessed to being taken by the Moulin Rouge star's home while in Australia on a previous trip.

'When I was in Sydney I walked by Nicole Kidman's house,' the impressed-sounding actress revealed.

Viola also told the Australian panel program she hadn't expected her now-infamous speech at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last month to go viral.

Upon accepting an award for best supporting actress in Fences, an emotional Viola told the audience that racial diversity was vital in telling people's stories.

'What August [the writer of the play and the film] did so beautifully is he honored the average man, who happened to be a man of colour,' she said in her speech.

'And sometimes we don't have to shake the world and move the world and create anything that is going to be in the history book.'

'I don't try to make any kind of statement I just try to be who I am,' Viola told The Project.

'And I feel like in being who I am it resonates somehow.'
