Footage of lightning strike at WA mine site goes viral

Spectacular footage has captured the moment a lightning bolt struck a crane in WA's North West on Sunday evening.

The video was shared by mining jobs website MiningLink's Facebook page on Monday, and has since amassed almost 480,000 views.

The footage was taken from a car travelling near the Citic Pacific Mining site in Cape Preston, 60km south of Karratha.

The lightning struck a CITIC Pacific stacker, but reportedly did not cause any damage.

Lightning strikes on mining sites are common and lightening warning and protection systems are often installed to prevent major injury or damage in the event of a thunderstorm.

It follows days of wet and stormy weather in the Pilbara, with torrential rain flooding the region and thunderstorms shutting down parts of Port Hedland.
