Auckland student Rachael Louise De Jong, 21, (inset) drowned after the Aratiatia Dam floodgates were opened, sending water surging down the river where she was swimming with friends. Two German tourists, Katrin Taylor and Kevin Kiau, were on a viewing platform in the Aratiatia Dam area when they heard the warning siren for the opening floodgates and watched in horror as the water surged towards four people standing on a submerged rock (main). Ms De Jong was swept away, her body was recovered from a rockpool by police on Monday night. Devastated friends and family say Ms De Jong was a smiling, bubbly woman and loved by many.

ABC host Leigh Sales (pictured left) has taken aim at Centrelink (right) in a bizarre Twitter tirade after being put on hold twice in a week. In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Sales demanded to know why she had been left on hold by Centrelink for two hours twice - and insisted the Australian welfare provider explain what they were doing to rectify the situation. A fired-up Sales, who fronts The 7.30 Report, tweeted Centrelink (inset) wanting to know: 'Does Centrelink ever answer its phone? 2 hours on hold last week fruitlessly, heading in the same direction today'.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull (left) has launched a scathing attack on Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, branding him a 'parasite' and accusing him of sucking up to millionaires. In an extraordinary attack at Prime Minister's Question Time, Turnbull accused Shorten of being in the pocket of the liberal elite in Melbourne. 'There was never a union leader in Melbourne that tucked his knees under more billionaire's table than the Leader of the Opposition,' Turnbull said, to cheers from the Liberal benches. He also called the Labor leader a 'social climbing sycophant'.

For some babies it can take years before their heads are graced with luscious locks - it took this girl just a few weeks in the womb. Adorable six-month-old Alexis Bartlett (left and right), from Sydney, has so much hair that her parents were in disbelief at her birth, even after seeing signs in an ultrasound.

Jill Sharp allegedly found pictures of Graham McQuet on social media and doctored the images so she could pretend they were a couple (left). The 31-year-old then reportedly posted the pictures of her 'fantasy life' on social media, even telling friends she and Mr McQuet were planning to marry. But friends say they grew suspicious after never meeting Mr McQuet. Alarm bells then started ringing when Sharp posted pictures of an apparent weekend away in London with Mr McQuet. But friends tracked him down when they spotted that the two photographs were possibly taken on different days (inset) and say Mr McQuet had no idea who Sharp was. It also emerged that he already had a fiancee, Marianne Stirling (together right), with whom he had visited London some weeks earlier.

Incredible footage has emerged showing the moment an overzealous carpet python regurgitates a tennis ball (pictured left). The footage, posted to the Townsville Snakehandler Facebook page, shows the tennis ball being messaged out of the snake's mouth (pictured top right) in the final seconds of what had been a delicate 20 minute operation. An eagle-eyed homeowner in Belgian Gardens had noticed the 1.5 metre carpet python slithering in the backyard with a huge lump (pictured bottom left) on Monday. Townsville Vet Clinic's senior veterinary nurse Trish Prendergast, who massaged the ball out of the snake, said: 'It probably smelt like food, maybe frogs'.

Madonna posted a heartbreaking picture of Malawian twins called Stella and Esther to her Instagram account - six months before her new adoption was finalised. In a heartwarming Instagram post (left) featuring her other daughter Lourdes, the singer wrote: '3 Beauties! Lola spends time with twins Stella and Esther at Home of Home Orphanage.' She shared several photos of her trip to the children's home in the Malawian city of Mchinji (top right) with her four children Lourdes, Rocco, David Banda and Mercy James. Yesterday a judge gave her permission to adopt twin girls aged four called Stella and Esther from the Home of Hope orphanage. The girls' biological father Adam Mwale was in the court room when the adoption was approved. Madonna is expected to fly her new daughters back to New York on a private jet today (bottom right, Madonna leaving Lilongwe High Court after a hearing last month).

NEW Bella Hadid and Joan Smalls travelled in style to Tommy Hilfiger's Fashion Show on Tuesday.  En route to Los Angeles' Venice Beach, which has been transformed into 'Tommyland' for the show, the models were in great spirits as they jetted out of New York's LAX airport.  But whilst they may have been excited to get up in the air, the pair were no doubt feeling a sense of deja vu, as the Air Tommy Jet bore a striking resemblance to the one used for the Victoria's Secret shows.

Cody Harman, 30, from California, had married, divorced and come out as transgender by the time he was 24. He got married to his husband Adam to 'fit in' but already knew he wanted to be a man. After starting his transition he took up bodybuilding and in October 2016 he entered his first female to male transgender bodybuilding competition.

Police investigating the horrific murder of a tradesman with a sword-like weapon have launched a manhunt for the victim's brother. Jonathan Dick, 39 (centre and inset), has been urged to hand himself in after his brother, David, 36 (left) had his throat slashed in a lift on Friday morning at Westfield Doncaster, in Melbourne's east. The Dick family - including the siblings' distraught mother (top right) - watched the CCTV yesterday but didn't believe Jonathan was the man in the footage. Police now believe he may be driving out of Victoria, possibly towards New South Wales or Queensland. Jonathan, from Seymour, Victoria, is thought to be in a blue 1997 Ford Fairmont sedan or a white 2002 Ford Falcon station wagon. The appeal comes after detectives released security footage of a suspect walking with a large yellow bag at the scene of the crime just a day before the attack.

NEW Sarah and John Wenham (together top right) had saved for years for 'the wedding of their dreams' in Cuba, costing more than £25,000 for themselves and 24 guests. But they were left fearing for their lives when the lobby roof at Sol Rio De Luna y Mares Hotel in Cuba suddenly buckled and collapsed (main), trapping them underneath and injuring many members of the wedding party including Ruth Ricketts, who required 19 stitches to her head (bottom right). The bride also needed to be stitched up when she suffered a nasty cut above her right eye (left). Sarah said: 'I saw the blood start to gush from my head and I genuinely thought in that moment that I was going to die.' In the aftermath, John desperately scrambled around the lobby to find his wife, and had to get two people to lift the rubble off her body so that he could drag her to safety.

A Brazilian teen born with microcephaly has become the first person in the world with the condition to be signed-up by a modelling agency. Ana Victoria Lago, 17, (pictured left and centre during a photoshoot, top right as a toddler and bottom right with her mother Viviane as a child) from Manaus, Brazil, has a smaller than normal head and an under-developed brain because of a genetic abnormality. She was snapped up by BM Model's Agency based in the city on Saturday and hopes to make history by debuting on the runway at the Rio de Janeiro Fashion Week in June. Although Ana's condition has not been caused by the Zika virus, her family hope she will be an inspiration to those affected by the disease which has ravaged Brazil.

Throwing wild punches while on a night out in Dalston, east London, the men (pictured) barely manage to land a single hit, with one fighter launching a flying kick - only to miss his opponent completely. The footage, posted by Rich Jones with the caption: 'when someone attacking your friend but you can't fight', has been viewed over 240,000 times online with viewers in stitches over the hapless brawlers.

Corey Lee Destrow and his friend Nchinmunya Ntembe were sentenced in January for dosing Mr Chow with the powerful hallucinogenic, but the shocking video has just emerged online. In it, Destrow and Ntembe, both 22 and from Lancaster, Lancashire, can be heard laughing when they begin drugging the rodent. 'This could be the end for Mr Chow. Or the beginning, we'll soon find out,' one of them says as the hamster starts drinking the Tizer. After they laugh that some has landed in Mr Chow's eye, the animal begins acting erratically and is later seen chewing on a cannabis leaf.

Built in 1947, the holiday home or 'dacha' as it's known in Russian was home to former Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin and his family during the warm summer months. Hidden deep in a forest off of Lake Ritsa in Abkhazia an autonomous region of Georgia - the modest property is almost invisible. Photographer Ioanna Sakellaraki, 26, took the images during her travels around the little known region of Abkhazia. A living testament to Stalin and his renowned paranoia the dacha is surrounded by thick trees and is painted green to make it pretty much invisible from the air. Known for his simple taste Stalin's holiday home is designed in a modest fashion despite it boasting a library and games room equipped with a billiards table.

CCTV shows a bare-chested Alan Bishop (inset right) with a knife tucked into his trousers as he goes next door to confront his love rival Russell Morris (inset left) outside their houses in Stoke. Wearing a Rambo-esque scarf around his face he squares up to Morris, 45, who is also armed with a blade. The pair - who both have criminal records - then repeatedly lunge and slash (pictured right) at one another in a front garden before moving onto the pavement. At one point Bishop, 40, falls to the ground as a horrified neighbour tries to intervene.

A problem-solving donkey has been caught on camera opening a wooden gate at a sanctuary in Ronco Scrivia, northern Italy. Sanctuary staff say he's much brighter than the other donkeys there and that his party-trick has become a regular occurrence.

Judging by the pictures, it is quite clear the bird of prey is not too pleased with its unwanted guest crashing down onto it over and over again in Tamilnadu, which is in Southern India. The encounter was spotted by Greaves Henriksen in Tamilnadu, India. The 52-year-old amateur photographer believes the short-toed snake eagle was sitting close to a nest, which the crow was trying to defend.

An intrepid photographer has created an incredible picture project documenting his year in Antarctica. Michal Krzysztofowicz, Data Manager for the British Antarctic Survey based at the Halley Research Station was posted to the continent in December 2015 and is due to stay until March 2017, and challenged himself to take a picture a day for the whole year. The result is Antarctica366 (it was a leap year), an amazing picture collection showcasing jaw-dropping photographs of life at the southernmost continent where temperatures can drop to -56øC.
