'I've got two words for you my friend - the gym!': Denzel Washington pokes fun at Mel Gibson's weight at the Oscar nominees luncheon in Beverly Hills

When it comes to Hollywood stars, it gets no bigger than Denzel Washington and Mel Gibson.

And the iconic actors displayed their camaraderie at this year's Oscar nominees luncheon, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Today Extra's entertainment reporter Sam Rubin spoke to both power players on Wednesday, regarding Denzel making a friendly jab about Mel.

Sam asked the Hacksaw Ridge director what Denzel said to him as they lined up for a photo with the rest of the 2017 Academy Award hopefuls.

'He said, I've got two words for you my friend: the gym,' Mel, 61, recalled.

'I gotta do something about it,' he continued. 'He's doing something about his. I think he's working out every day.'

The father of nine was then asked if he wanted to get in shape for the Oscars, which are scheduled for February 26.

'I don't know if I need to do that, but maybe shape up for my heart condition - if I have one,' he strangely responded. 'I don't even know if I have one.'

'I told him to get in the gym, but he said he was already in the gym, so he's gotta work on that,' Denzel said with a smile. 'Get in the gym more.'

After recently winning the SAG Award for his portrayal of Troy Maxson in the August Wilson-penned film Fences, Denzel is predicted to win Best Actor for the role.

Hacksaw Ridge is up for six awards at this year's ceremony, including Mel's Best Director nod, a category he last won in 1996 for Braveheart.
