Elisabeth Moss sported a painful-looking scratch on her forehead while acting on the Toronto set of The Handmaid's Tale on Monday.

But the 34-year-old Golden Globe winner's gash was likely all for the cameras as she filmed a snowy scene for the Hulu dystopian drama series.

Between takes, the Top of the Lake actress snuck in a few puffs of a cigarette in her trailer.

Costume designer Ane Crabtree crafted Elisabeth's distinctively red handmaid dress, which identifies her character's subservient position in the Republic of Gilead.

The Handmaid's Tale - helmed by female director Reed Morano (Meadowland) - is based on the 1985 Margaret Atwood bestseller of the same name.

'I worked [on the show] the day after the election,' Moss said at the TCA Press Tour last month - according to Esquire.

'Joseph had a line from the book where he says "Better never means better for everyone. It always means worse, for some." I just got chills talking about it. 

'It was very difficult to stand there and have him say that to me and play my reaction to that, which is obviously horror, and not feel something more than I think I would have felt otherwise. We are fascinated and horrified by the parallels.'
