Manchester United missed the chance to make up ground on the Premier League's top five as struggling Hull claimed a battling goalless draw.
It was United's ninth draw of the season and left Jose Mourinho's men some way off the Champions League places.
Sportsmail's Jack Gaughan highlights five things we learned at at Old Trafford.
Anthony Martial was an unused substitute against Hull City on Wednesday night
Jose Mourinho endured another frustrating night as United recorded a ninth league draw
SULKY MARTIAL
'The players pick themselves,' were the words of Jose Mourinho before this. So that meant no sulky Anthony Martial after he failed to impress his manager against Wigan in the FA Cup at the weekend.
The Frenchman was deemed only good enough for the bench and was notably absent from the pre-match warm-up — although Wednesday night was not the first time he has chosen to miss the substitutes' leisurely kickabout.
Hull defender Harry Maguire (left) handled the physical presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic
MAGUIRE DOES NOT SHIRK THE CHALLENGE
Praise has been lavished on Hull's Harry Maguire for his recent performances, particularly a surprising finesse in bringing the ball out from centre back.
But the Sheffield lad showed the more traditional skills associated with his position last night, going shoulder to shoulder with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and overpowering Paul Pogba from an attacking Hull free-kick.
Jaguar unveiled an advert starring Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on Monday
MOURINHO ENDS HIS ASSOCIATION WITH JAGUAR
Mourinho's partnership with Jaguar is officially over in what will come as a boost to Manchester United's £47million-a-year sponsors Chevrolet.
Jaguar unveiled an advert starring the 54-year-old on Monday, as they used their high-profile client one last time before his contract ran out. There is currently no new offer on the table for Mourinho to stay as their brand ambassador.
Juan Mata went closest for United but his effort was brilliantly kept out by Eldin Jakupovic
UNITED HAVE REGAINED THE FEELGOOD FACTOR
While results have not always been great, perhaps the biggest indication of the feel-good factor returning to United under Mourinho is their renewed attacking purpose.
United have registered more shots on target at home in the league this season — 77 before Wednesday night — than they managed throughout the whole of Louis van Gaal's disastrous final campaign, when just 75 efforts troubled the opposition keeper.
Wayne Rooney was thrown on at half-time but he could not make the breakthrough
ROONEY STILL HAS A ROLE TO PLAY AT UNITED
For the first season since his emergence at Everton 15 years ago, Wayne Rooney is not a guaranteed starter for his club.
But Mourinho's decision to throw him on at half-time in an attempt to galvanise his side indicated United still expect their captain to have a tangible impact when he plays.
An eventual move to China has not been ruled out but for now, Rooney continues to play an pivotal role at United.
