Alastair Cook's five magic moments as England captain steps down... from a century in Nagpur on debut to leading a historic series win in India
- Alastair Cook resigned the England Test captaincy on Monday
- He scored a century on his Test debut against India in Nagpur in 2006
- Cook scored heavily during his first tour as captain when England won in India
- He became first Englishman to score 10,000 Test runs last year
Alastair Cook called time on his tenure as England captain on Monday after overseeing 59 matches in charge of the Test side.
In his time as skipper Cook won two home Ashes series, suffered a whitewash in Australia, became England's highest run scorer and led his side to wins in India and South Africa.
As he prepares to step aside, Sportsmail look at five magic moments from Cook's stellar Test career so far...
Cook celebrates scoring his maiden Test ton against India in Nagpur in 2006
Nagpur, March 2006
When Cook travelled halfway around the world for his first Test match, walked off a plane and scored a hundred against India, he gave notice of what he was made of. That was captaincy material.
Cook raises his bat to the crowd during a brilliant 137 against Pakistan in 2012
Abu Dhabi, February 2012
In a one-dayer against Pakistan, he scored 137 off 142 deliveries, when the next highest score in the game was 50 by Ravi Bopara. It was a brilliant knock, given the opposition and conditions.
Cook led from the front with the bat as England won 2-1 away in India in 2012
Tour of India, 2012-13
He made scores of 176, 122 and 190, leading from the front as England won the series 2-1.
It was a phenomenal individual effort but equally impressive was his handling of his two spinners, Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar.
Cook stands with Stuart Broad after England sealed a series victory in South Africa
Tour of South Africa, 2015-16
Captain of two Ashes series wins, enough said. But securing an away win in South Africa was excellent. Sure, there were individual displays of brilliance from the likes of Ben Stokes but the way he led the team was as good as it got for him.
Cook reached 10,000 Test runs during the clash with Sri Lanka in Durham in May 2016
Chester-le-Street, May 2016
His 10,000th Test run came against Sri Lanka last year. He may as well have been in Siberia. The crowd were dressed as Yetis. It was freezing. No finer place to do it.
PS
Unfinished business: he has not scored a hundred against Australia in England. Get on with it, lad — you've no excuse now!
