Midnight Ramble Band and Guests - 2016-08-06 - Last Waltz 40th Anniversary Celebration - Damrosch Park, Lincon Center, New York

The Last Waltz 40th Anniversary Celebration
Damrosch Park, Lincoln Center, New York, NY

Audience recording, Good quality.
Mp3 @ 224 kbps

With the 40th anniversary of The Band's historic final concert, The Last Waltz, coming up this week (Thanksgiving Day), many tributes to and celebrations of one of the greatest concerts in rock history will be held all around the US. Most of these tribute shows feature primarily local artists and celebrities, but some are all-star affairs. A couple of tribute show were already held earlier his year in New Orleans, featuring Warren Haynes, Don Was, and Michael McDonald, among others. This same group also plans to take this Last Waltz 40th show on tour in early 2017. A series of shows in New Zealand feature surviving Band member Garth Hudson, along with John Simon, and a host of NZ locals. Another all-star tribute show, and one also with direct ties to the actual 'Band' was held earlier this summer at Lincoln Center, New York, where Larry Campbell and the Midnight Ramble Band, which was Levon Helm's Band for many years prior to his death, hosted a gala tribute event. This show featured a couple of performers that were at the original Last Waltz, in Dr. John and Howard Johnson, as well as guests Bob Weir, Lucinda Williams, Patti Griffith, Buddy Miller, and newcomers Anderson East and Teddy Thompson (Richard Thompson's son). It was a scaled-down version of the epic-length original show, featuring most of the best songs, done in as authentic as possible versions (such as using Allen Toussaint's original horn arrangements, etc.). Overall, a wonderful show, and here it is for you. But of course, it is still no comparison to the original. Unfortunately, I only have this in the 224 kbps version posted here (obtained from BigO Worldwide). I'm sure there are higher quality versions floating around, but for now this is the best I have. Happy Thanksgiving to all!. Of course, the original full-length The Last Waltz is also available as posted previously (here), to relive the actual concert event.

Timbuk3 - 1989-11-04 - Paradise Theater, Boston, MA

Timbuk3
November 4, 1989
Paradise Theater, Boston, MA

Audience master recording, very good quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Here's a rare treat that I only recently discovered (thanks to mediaaddict for posting this on G101 forum). This is the only full-length concert recording of the wonderful Timbuk3 that I know of, so it is great to be able to post it here. This comes from 1989, on tour in support of their 3rd great album, Edge of Allegiance, which contains even more pointed political and social commentary than their previous albums, all while maintaining that dark and edgy cynical humor. Just great stuff from a totally unique band. By this time the duo of Pat and Barbara MacDonald had added a drummer for their live shows, and would shortly add a bass as well to become a full-fledged band. But this show comes at a good time in the band's history, featuring a variety of songs from their first 3 albums (which were their best), as well as a few non-album tracks, and a revamped version (slower, darker, funkier) of their one hit single ('The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades'). All in all, a wonderful show from a very talented (and much-missed) band.

Mudcrutch - 2016-06-20 - The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA

Mudcrutch
2016-06-20
Fillmore Theater, San Francisco, CA
Audience recording, very good quality
Mp3 @320 kbps

Here's some more Tom Petty and Mudcrutch. This time, rather than their original older stuff, here is the current status of Mudcrutch on their recent 2016 US tour in support of their 2nd full album, Mudcrutch 2. Tom apparently had fun reuniting with his original band for an album in 2008, so he did it again in 2016 for another album, and this time with a full-scale, full-fledged tour. I've told the Mudcrutch story previously, so no need to go over that again, but this probably also could be considered as part of the collaborative tour series of late, as rather than being the full-time frontman, as with Petty and the Heartbreakers, with Mudcrutch Tom takes a step back and let's the rest of the band have their spotlight, with each member singing lead on at least one song on the new album, and Petty handling bass and letting others do most of the guitar work. And it all seems to work, as Mudcrutch has a different sound than the Heartbreakers, and they are free to go back and do more country-rock and old-time Rock 'n Roll, and just have a good time. For these live shows they have added Herb Pedersen, bluegrass instrumentalist extraordinaire (not a regular member of the band), to round out the sound. And it's a tribute to Petty that he is content to let Mudcrutch only do Mudcrutch songs (and oldies), and not try to squeeze in a few of Petty's own biggest hits into this band's setlist. This is a wonderfully fun show and very good recording, with a few extra songs from other shows from this tour thrown in to round out the recording.

Bob Dylan with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - 1986-06-12 - Sacramento, CA

Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
June 12, 1986
Cal Expo Amphitheatre, Sacramento, CA
True Confessions Tour
Audience recording (from 1st gen. cassette), good sound quality
Available in both Lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Continuing with the Collaborative Tours theme, and sticking with Dylan, as he has been known to be involved with some very interesting combinations over the years (w/The Band, The Grateful Dead, etc.), here's a great combination tour that that goes back a ways, to 1986, when Dylan teamed up with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, for the True Confessions tour. For this tour, Tom and the Boys served as Bob's back-up band, as well as taking the spotlight with some of their own songs. If that seems like a really good match-up, well it is. Note that this was still a few years before Dylan joined Petty (along with George Harrison,  Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison) as The Traveling Wilburys, so this is all pure Dylan and Petty stuff, and wonderful it is. This show is from early in the tour, in Sacramento, and although there are some better recordings available from this tour, most of those are not complete shows. Here we have the complete show, and a very good (but not great) audience recording. So, check out Bob and Tom, and the Rest of the Heartbreakers in this unique tour and show.

Bob Dylan & Paul Simon - 1999 Tour Compilation - various locations and dates

Bob Dylan & Paul Simon
'Boys in The Bubble' - 1999 Tour Compilation
Various venues and locations

Audience recordings, varying quality - overall good sound quality
Available in both lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

Continuing with the series of collaborative concert tours, here's one that goes back to 1999, and the teamong of two of the greatest and most iconic of the singer-songwriters that emerged from the 1960's, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. The teamed up for a concert tour in 1999. And although the format was more of normal sharing of a double bill (each performs separately, then do a few songs together) then the more truly collaborative and intertwined efforts we have featured recently, this compilation tries to combine and intermingle their show as if they did perform more together. This coleection from 2011 by Blindwilly compiles songs from throughout the tour (as well as a couple related songs from previous tours - Dylan doing Simon songs), but presents them with alternating Dylan and Simon performances, and interspersing their few coo-performed songs throughout. Although the combined performance songs are really nothing special (odd even, as Dylan trying to song harmony is off-putting, and Simon trying to sing harmony against Dylan's meandering vocals is an adventure too), it is nonetheless a unique opportunity to hear these two songwriting giants performing together. A strange but certainly enjoyable experience.

Tom Petty, Mudcrutch - Mudcrutch and Solo Petty LP Outtakes, 1972-1977

Tom Petty, Mudcrutch
Mudcrutch Demos and Solo Petty LP Outtakes
circa 1972-1977

Recordings from various sources, fair to very good quality
Available in both lossless (FLAC) and mp3 (320 kbps) versions

In response to a recent request, I dug out this collection of demos and outtakes from the early days of Mudcrutch and Tom Petty's initial aborted solo project. And since this contains some very interesting relics from the past in the careers of the revived Mudcrutch band and Petty himself, I decided to go ahead and post it here for all to enjoy. As most probably know now, Mudcrutch was Petty's band in Gainesville, FL, before the days of The Heartbreakers (although core members Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench were in both bands). After several years making the rounds in central Florida, in 1974, they packed up their van, and armed with a demo tape, headed out West to find fame, fortune, and a recording contract. They made it as far as Tulsa (and ultimately L.A.), where they hooked up with Leon Russel's Shelter Records, and began recording some tracks for an eventual album. However, things didn't work out, the album never happened (the only released product from that association was an unsuccessful single, 'Depot Street'), and by 1975, the band was dropped and quickly split up. However, Shelter was still interested in Petty by himself to make a solo album, which he started to work on, but it just wasn't coming together without a solid band behind him. On a trip back home to Gainesville, Petty checked out the new band Campbell and Tench was putting together, and that group just felt right to Petty, and they became The Heartbreakers and Petty's permanent band. So, the solo album was dropped and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers began fresh. So, this collection contains remnants from the original Mudcrutch Demo tape (circa 1973-1974) that the boys brought with them on their journey West, some tracks from their recording sessions at Shelter Church Studios (including a rare Danny Roberts vocal track), as well as some songs from Petty's solo album sessions (1975). However, not all the songs presented here are actually from that period (10 of the 15 tracks are), as there are also several songs that come from The Heartbreakers sessions in and around the album You're Gonna Get It, which are from around 1977-1978. So, although not all Mudcrutch related stuff (some Hertbreakers, too), this is a very interesting set of songs that for the most part never were developed or followed up on any further. Recording quality varies greatly, but most of the tracks have surprisingly good sound. Certainly a must for any fan of Tom Petty, Mudcrutch , and the Heartbreakers.

Paul Simon & Sting - 2014-03-13 - Washington DC

Paul Simon & Sting
2014-03-13
Verizon Center, Washington, DC

Audience recording (taper:whitenite), very good quality
Mp3 (320kbps) files

Since the previous collaboration tour posts were popular, let's keep with that theme. Here's Sting again, from a couple years ago, when he teamed up with Paul Simon, for a similar type tour to the one he recently did with Peter Gabriel, with a collaborative theme, performing many of their songs together, as well as each doing some short sets separately. It makes for some interesting versions of each of their songs. Of the half dozen or so shows from this tour (2014 US tour) I have heard, this is the best quality and sounding audience recording I know of. So, enjoy Paul & Sting on this enjoyable trip through their greatest hits, with just a bit of a difference. After this successful US tour, Paul & Sting set out for europe & the rest of the world in 2015, of which there also are several nice shows available. Note:For those partial to lossless, although I don't have this one in FLAC, I know that it is available out there if you look around for it. Perhaps later I'll post an update in lossless if I run across the files.
