  • Brady made history by winning the Super Bowl MVP honor for the fourth time
  • He was presented his trophy Monday by deflategate foe NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell
  • Brady's father has accused Goodell of a 'witchhunt' against his son over the scandal which saw the quarterback suspended for four games
  • Neither Brady nor Godell offered to shake hands as the trophy was presented
  • The MVP talked about his mother who is undergoing cancer treatment
  • 'She's been though a lot,' he said 'Way harder than what I went through last night'
  •  He previously said that he was hoping to win the Super Bowl in his mom's honor
  • Brady, 39, also said he felt 'young' as he revealed he had no plans to retire

Tom Brady was presented the MVP trophy in an awkward exchange with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after the Patriots's historic Super Bowl win.

Brady won the Super Bowl MVP award for the fourth time after he led the New England Patriots to a thrilling 34-28 overtime win over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI at NRG Stadium in Houston.

'Tom, come on up, get your trophy,' Goodell said during the MVP news conference Monday morning after grudgingly admitting that Brady was 'maybe one of the greatest players of all time.'

Neither offered to shake hands although they stood and posed for pictures together.

The awkwardness between them stems from Deflategate - where the Patriots were accused of using deliberately underinflated footballs. The scandal resulted in Brady's four-game suspension. Brady's father later accused Goodell of a 'witchhunt' against his son.

Brady was later asked during the news conference, whether his win and MVP presentation would help fix the relationship between he and the commissioner.

He deftly skipped over the question, saying he was sure 'all that stuff will take care of itself.'

But he did open up about his parents, particularly his mother Galynn who has been undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for the last eighteen months for an unspecified cancer.

It was feared she might not be well enough to attend the game. But Mrs Brady refused to miss her son's game.

Before kickoff, Brady told Westwood One's Jim Gray, 'She's the one I want to win it for.'

'She's been though a lot,' Brady said at the Monday morning press conference. 'Way harder than what I went through last night, what the team went through.

'All families go through challenging times personally. I'm just happy to be able to celebrate.'

He added that his father, Tom Brady Sr., an inspiration for him, had been there for his mom 'every step of the way.'

At 39, Brady is old for an NFL quarterback. But the MVP appears to have no plans to retire.

'I love doing it so I don't want it to end any time soon,' he said.

He said that he didn't feel that he'd pushing forty.

'I hang out with a bunch of 20-years-olds, so that makes you feel pretty young,' he said.

Brady said it was a 'great honor' to be named MVP and said he was extremely proud of his teammates, many of whom played 'phenomenally'.

He saved special praise for running back James White - perhaps his only competition for MVP - after White set a Super Bowl record with 14 receptions, which went for 110 yards and a touchdown.

BRADY VS GOODELL: THE DEFLATEGATE SCANDAL

More than two years after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's decision to ban New England Patriots' Tom Brady from the first four games of this year's season, it appears resentment from the quarterback and fans still lingers.

Brady had been accused of tampering with footballs used during the AFC Championship game.

After a probe determined Brady was 'generally aware' of a plot to break rules, followed by months of appeals, the book on Deflategate appeared to finally close when the future Hall of Famer was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season. The league also fined the Patriots $1 million and took away two draft picks, including next years' first-round choice.

'We are moving on from that,' Goodell insisted. 'That's part of our history, but it's something that we are comfortable with the process, the decision. We're focusing on the game now.'

But Brady, and Patriots fans, don't seem ready to bury the hatchet just yet.

The Super Bowl-winning quarterback was photographed looking at Goodell with searing intensity after he led his team to a dramatic overtime victory at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sunday.

Goodell and Brady awkwardly shook hands during the postgame ceremonies honoring the champions.

As Goodell handed over the Vince Lombardi trophy to New England owner Robert Kraft last night, he was forced to shout into the microphone because he was being drowned out by boos.

Kraft then took a shot at the commissioner's handling of the Deflategate saga.

'A lot has transpired over the last two years,' Kraft said. 'And I don't think that needs any explanation.'

The quarterback also seemed to make a sly dig at Goodell just a few days ago when he appeared in a Shields MR advert, filmed before his historic victory.

In it, he is asked by a nurse to hand over any jewelry. Brady hands four championship rings and is asked by the nurse, 'Is that all?'.

Brady responds by producing a fifth ring and says: 'I've got this one. It's kind of new'.

The nurse replies, 'We must get you a bigger locker,' to which Brady responds, 'Roger that.'

Patriots fans believe the 'Roger' was a reference to Roger Goodell.

The commissioner is Public Enemy Number One in New England over the Deflategate suspension. Even Boston's police department tweeted to let Goodell know he wasn't welcome in Boston any time soon.

'James White is like my oldest son. He just does everything right. You can't get mad at him,' Brady said.

Brady also mentioned Julian Edelman's incredible catch on New England's game-tying drive, saying he was 'really proud of him'.

'He's a phenomenal player who played the game of his life. We had a great time last night celebrating and talking about it.'

Brady admitted he'd had a 'little bit of doubt' about their win, particularly when they were down 25 points.

'It took a lot of great plays and that's why you play to the end. It's a 60-minute game.'

He also mentioned the mystery of his disappearing game jersey.

Brady said he's put his game jersey in his bag but when he came out it was gone.

Tom Leyden of FOX25 had reported a Patriots equipment manager took the jersey locked it away in a safe place for the player.

But either someone forgot to tell Brady - or the jersey has gone missing again - after he raised concerns that someone would try and flog it on Ebay.

Brady led his team to the Patriots' fifth NFL championship in the game's first overtime finish, while Brady finished 43 for 62, the most attempts in Super Bowl history, for 466 yards and two touchdowns.

The quarterback broke down in tears after the game, in which the team managed to comeback from a 25 point deficit in the third quarter of the game to even the score and keep their hopes of yet another victory alive.

The Patriots then clinched the victory minutes into overtime when White plunged past the goal line on the team's opening drive in extra time.

It was a historic win for Brady and head coach Belichick, who with the victory now each have five Super Bowl rings, the most of any player or coach in the history of theNFL

Brady made history by winning the Super Bowl MVP honor for the fourth time - the most ever won by a player.

And he did it all in front of his mother Galynn who wore a bandanna over her head as she greeted her son after his victory.

In an interview with CBS Boston after the game Galynn said she was overwhelmed after watching her son play.

She also said that she spent the game praying for a Patriots win.

'It's the best ever. It's the best ever. And he's ... I'm speechless. I'm speechless,' said Tom Sr. in the same interview. 'It was so spectacular and so fun and so nerve-racking and so awesome.'

When asked how his son maintains his composure Tom Sr. said he must have got it from his mother.

Earlier in the week, Brady teared up during Media Day when he was asked to name his hero, saying it was his father.

He's also posted a heartfelt photo to social media on Friday announcing that his family has arrived in Houston for his sixth Super Bowl appearance.

Brady admitted through tears that she hadn't been present at a single game this season, and his father only made it to one, which was 'atypical'.

The quarterback posted the touching photo with the caption 'Sandwich kiss for mom at picture day!!! Go Pats!!!!'

Brady said in a press conference: 'It's been a challenging year for my family, just for some personal reasons.

'It'll just be nice having everyone here watching us this weekend. That's my mom and dad,' according to CSN NE

'They've been so supportive my entire life, it's nice to be able to show them . . . to try to make them proud.'
