Hey Mike, nice episode. I don't think that the badassery you described is rare, it just gets rarely mentioned. First example that pops into my head: until recently (post WWII), women on the very rocky mountains of Epirus would work in the fields well into the ninth month of pregnancy, with a folding knife in their pocket and a needle with some thread stuck somewhere on their garments. Because they fully expected to give birth out there, and would have to cut the umbilical cord and sew it up BY THEMSELVES. And they didn't even think it was a big deal. It was just what you had to do.
