He's back in business! Mel Gibson's career comeback continues as the actor attends Oscars luncheon to celebrate Best Director nomination

For a while it seemed like Mel Gibson's career was on the skids after the actor was besieged by a series of scandals. 

But thanks to his latest effort at stepping behind the camera as a director on the lauded drama Hacksaw Ridge, Mel is back in Hollywood's good books. 

The very tanned 61-year-old was beaming as he stepped out at the 89th Oscars Nominee Luncheon in Beverly Hills, California on Monday.

He's up for a best director award at the upcoming 2017 ceremony and was the picture of laid back film star, sporting a spiffy woolen suit jacket with an open black shirt underneath. 

Hacksaw Ridge has placed the actor and director back in Tinseltown's good books after he was the focus of multiple high profile scandals.

In 2006 the Oscar winner was arrested on a DUI charge on a Californian highway and his hate-filled rant at his arresting officer caused public shock and outrage. 

'The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,' he was recorded saying.

Highly publicized and ugly divorce proceedings with Russian singer Oksana Grigorieva in 2010, along with accusations of domestic violence, didn't help his case.

Last year, Shane Black, the screenwriter of the film that put Mel on the map, Lethal Weapon, told Business Insider that he felt the Braveheart star was washed up.

'I think he's essentially been blacklisted in the industry,' Shane told the publication. 

But the American born, Aussie-raised star has been redeemed with Hacksaw Ridge.

The war drama has been nominated for a slew of awards, including multiple Golden Globes, BAFTAs and a whopping six Oscars. 

The most satisfying of which for Mel must be his Best Achievement in Directing nomination, as well as the film's nod as Best Motion Picture of the Year. 

On a personal front, he's just had his ninth child with much younger girlfriend Rosalind Ross, 26.

They welcomed their son Lars Gerard on January 21.

Mel has seven children with ex-wife Robyn Moore: Hannah, 36, twin boys Christian and Edward, 34, William, 31, Louis, 28, Milo, 26, and Thomas, 17.

He also has a six-year-old daughter, Lucia, with former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.
