Branford Marsalis (born August 26, 1960) is an American saxophonist, composer and bandleader. While primarily known for his work in jazz as the leader of the Branford Marsalis Quartet, he also performs frequently as a soloist with classical ensembles and has led the group Buckshot LeFonque.
Marsalis was born in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, the son of Dolores (née Ferdinand), a jazz singer and substitute teacher, and Ellis Louis Marsalis, Jr., a pianist and music professor. His brothers Jason Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis III, and Delfeayo Marsalis, and father Ellis are also jazz musicians.
In the summer of 1980, while still a Berklee College of Music student, Marsalis toured Europe playing alto and baritone saxophone in a large ensemble led by drummer Art Blakey. Other big band experiences with Lionel Hampton and Clark Terry followed over the next year, and by the end of 1981 Marsalis, on alto saxophone, had joined his brother Wynton in Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Other performances with his brother, including a 1981 Japanese tour with Herbie Hancock, led to the formation of his brother Wynton’s first quintet, where Marsalis shifted his emphasis to soprano and tenor saxophones. He continued to work with Wynton until 1985, a period that also saw the release of his own first recording, Scenes in the City, as well as guest appearances with other artists including Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.
Kevin Tyrone Eubanks (born November 15, 1957 in Philadelphia) is an American jazz and fusion guitarist and composer who was the leader of the Tonight Show Band with host Jay Leno from 1995 to 2010. He also led the Primetime Band on the short-lived The Jay Leno Show.
Eubanks was born into a musical family. His mother, Vera Eubanks, is a gospel and classical pianist and organist. His uncle, Ray Bryant, was a jazz pianist. His older brother, Robin Eubanks, is a trombonist, and his younger brother Duane Eubanks is a trumpeter. Two cousins are also musicians, the late bassist David Eubanks and the pianist Charles Eubanks. Kevin studied violin and trumpet before settling on the guitar.
As an elementary school student, Eubanks was trained in violin, trumpet, and piano at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. He later attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and then moved to New York to begin his professional career.
Eubanks is a pescetarian and maintains a diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, egg whites, and fish. He is also an avid fan of Philadelphia sports teams. He once lost a bet on the Philadelphia 76ers, and he was forced to eat a corn dog when he lost. In 2007, he was voted PETA's "World's Sexiest Vegetarian Man".
Rickey Minor (born September 6, 1959) is a music director, composer and music producer, now best known as the musical director and bandleader on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 2010 to 2014, taking over after Kevin Eubanks left. Minor was born in Monroe, Louisiana and raised by his mother, Helen Blevins, in South Central Los Angeles, CA. Much of his musical training was self-taught.
Minor has served as musical director for numerous superstar tours, including: Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Ray Charles, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé and for television productions, including: the Grammy Awards, the NAACP Image Awards and the Super Bowl, of which he's received four separate Emmy nominations in the musical direction category. In addition to his work as current musical director for American Idol, he served as bandleader on Fox's Don't Forget the Lyrics!.
As bandleader, Minor differed from Eubanks in terms of material used. While Eubanks would play original music with the band, Minor on the other hand plays established hits ranging from heavy metal to rap to classic rock to soul.
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno is an American late-night talk show hosted by Jay Leno that initially aired from May 25, 1992 to May 29, 2009, and resumed production on March 1, 2010 until its ending on February 6, 2014. The fourth incarnation of the Tonight Show franchise made its debut on May 25, 1992, three days following Johnny Carson's retirement as host of the program. The program originates from NBC Studios in Burbank, California, and was broadcast Monday through Friday at 11:35 PM in the Eastern and Pacific time zones (10:35 PM Central/Mountain time). Unlike Carson or his predecessor Jack Paar, Leno only once utilized a guest host, preferring to host the series by himself.
The series, which followed the same basic format as that of his predecessors (an opening monologue followed by comedy routines, interviews and performances), ran until May 29, 2009, after which Leno was succeeded by Conan O'Brien. NBC signed Leno to a new deal for a nightly talk show in the 10:00 pm ET timeslot. The primetime series, titled The Jay Leno Show, debuted on September 14, 2009, following a similar format to the Leno incarnation of Tonight.
James Douglas Muir "Jay" Leno (/ˈlɛnoʊ/; born April 28, 1950) is an American comedian, actor, writer, producer, voice actor, and television host. He was the host of NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to 2009. Beginning in September 2009, Leno started a primetime talk show, titled The Jay Leno Show, which aired weeknights at 10:00 p.m. ET, also on NBC.
After The Jay Leno Show was canceled in January 2010 amid a host controversy, Leno returned to host The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 1, 2010. He hosted his last episode of The Tonight Show on February 6, 2014. That year, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.
Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York. His homemaker mother, Catherine (née Muir; 1911–1993), was born in Greenock, Scotland, and came to the United States at age 11. His father, Angelo (1910–1994), was an insurance salesman who was born in New York, to immigrants from Flumeri, Italy. Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and obtained a bachelor's degree in speech therapy from Emerson College, where he started a comedy club in 1973. His older brother, Patrick (May 12, 1940 – October 6, 2002), was a Vietnam War veteran who worked as an attorney.

And here it is, Jay Leno's first permanent episode as host of the Tonight Show, with Branford Marsalis your new leader of the Tonight Show band and Ed Hall your new announcer. This still leaves rooms for special guests Billy Crystal, Shanice Wilson, and Robert Krulwich.
He sat down with Ellen and they discussed their history in comedy together, and his thoughts on leaving his longtime gig.

This is one of the most amazing Tonight Show interviews of all time. In December 1994, while promoting Dumb & Dumber, Jim Carrey completely took over The Tonight Show. In it, he "hypnotizes" the audience and makes them applause at will, explains how he was abducted by aliens and shows the "markings" on his abdomen by drawing on it with a marker, and finally sings "White Christmas" perfectly out of key. Amazing. Enjoy!

One of the most important groups in hip-hop was Gang Starr. Consisting of DJ Premier and MC Guru (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal), the two men would make a dent in music. The guys would go on to make make an unprecedented six recordings spanning over two decades. Their raw street edge as well as lyrics that range from the awareness of gang violence, to the praise and respect of black culture and history, Guru and Primo didn’t sell their soles to the rap game and the record business. To really understand the real legacy of Gang Starr, here’s a brief history of how the two connected. Guru was born Keith Edward Elam on July 17th, 1961 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Elam’s parents, his father a prominent lawyer and now judge, and mother worked in the Boston public schools, stressed education to...

Ice-T, Gwen Stefani, Tim Robbins, George Clinton and Branford Marsalis walk into a bar and go over to the jukebox. Chances are they all agree to play some Fishbone, but may have trouble finding a track. Despite industry-wide consent that Fishbone is one of the most original, influential and badass bands of the last 25 years, too few know their music and only the lucky have seen them play live. Of course, the erratic and eccentric combo of singer Angelo Moore and bassist Norwood Fisher may have doomed them from the beginning, it is also this dynamic pairing that helped redefine hard rock, punk, funk, ska and soul. If you're unfamiliar with the band, you must see EVERYDAY SUNSHINE: The Story of Fishbone (http://fishbonedocumentary.com/), a head-banging documentary that not only goes behi...

I can honestly say that bassist, composer, and now educator Robert Hurst has taken “the road less traveled” as quoted by poet Robert Frost in his long and illustrious career. At a time when most jazz musicians focus intently on their career as a leader, many work hard and endlessly on their craft. On the other hand, Robert is wearing many shoes and those shoes include roles that are pretty much in sync with his calling, both on the bandstand as a leader as well as an educator. In 2008, Robert took on the the position of Associate Professor of Music at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This Detroit, Michigan native felt it was the right time to come back home, while guiding and teaching up-and-coming musicians and students their role in jazz music. As a child, his paren...
For well over 30 years musician Ralph Peterson as been on the front-lines as both a educator, musician, and friend of jazz music. Peterson came on the music scene in the 1980’s at a time when the “Young Lions” dominated the jazz scene here in New York City and abroad. He was blessed to be taught, mentored, and befriend both master drummers Art Blakey and Michael Carvin who’ve had an impact on him both musically and personally. Ralph has even blessed the stage with other great jazz luminaries like Betty Carter, Stanley Turrentine, Terence Blanchard, Branford Marsalis, and Michael Brecker just to name a new. Just recently Ralph reached a milestone in his career as well as life. He just turned 50 and celebrated this important event with friends and family at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in New Yor...
Bassist Charnett Moffett is no stranger in the jazz and R & B world. For almost 30 years the bassist/composer has backed and played with such luminaries like Anita Baker, McCoy Tyner, Melody Gardot, Ornette Coleman, Stanley Jordan, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and Geri Allen. Charnett has been around music all of his life. His father, the late Charles Moffett. Sr, backed Ornette Coleman. As a child, he developed the Avant-Garde style of playing and composing. His interaction with Coleman allowed him to grow as an innovator in his own right. At age 16 he recorded and toured with Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and began cutting his teeth as a young and budding musician. Charnett has come full circle musically in that he's formed the new "Moffett Family Band" in which he started off playing p...

Giving up but never really tried my best.
Pathetic's the word that's always fit me best.
Against the wall, I've got this weight on my chest.
I wish we never met.
We are the kids with everything
built up just to fall back down.
We've got the maps and masterplan but I'd ruin everything.
Hold onto everything you've got,
you're spending time with everything I'm not.
Replace my faults with so called "friends."
This call's one I'll never send.
Pick it up now we're moving too slow.
Can't think there's nowhere to go.
You're right I'm always so wrong.
This has gone on for too long.
Story's over, so call your best friends.
Story's over, that's how it always ends.
Are we together? Are we just friends?
I'll run for cover from these monthly trends.
We are the kids with everything
built up just to fall back down.
We've got the maps and masterplan but I'd ruin everything.
Hold onto everything you've got,
you're spending time with everything I'm not.
Replace my faults with so called "friends."
This call's one I'll never send.
Called it quits,
we never really stood a chance.
Pathetic's the word that's always fit me best.
Looking back, I never really cared at all.
I always knew we'd fall.
Counting down the time we have now,
ticking hands on this clock move too slow.
Angry words are hard to exchange,
